It's Doctor Who! - An IDW Doctor Who Thread

That’s absolutely not what IDW stands for, but it’s a fun thread title so whatever.

I decided I wanted to have a look at another era of Doctor Who’s comics, that being the rights holders from 2007-2013: IDW Publishing.

I’ve previously delved into The Prisoners of Time series (see my thoughts in The Prisoners of Time thread, or just my Review Catalogue), which was a bit of a mixed bag, and The Forgotten which was… not great.

But after coming across them again through a reference on a Torchwood page on Tardis Wiki, I thought I’d give it another shot, this time going for the 2012 run of comics with Eleven, Amy, and Rory (at least to start)

To get discussion going though, here’s a few quick questions!

Have you read any of these comics?
What are your favourite and least favourite stories from the range?
Has anyone read the Star Trek crossover and how was it?

One of my favourite parts of Prisoners of Time was the fun little references, glad to see it’s not just there

I bought the Star Trek crossover comic when I was like 13 or 14(whenever it came out) as a birthday present for a friend who’s a huge Star Trek nerd. I read it before I gave it to him and it was a lot of fun, but I don’t remember anything specific besides the Cybermen and Borg team up, which was a cool idea, can’t say anything about the execution though.

I have a bunch of digital Doctor Who comics I got from a Humble Bundle a few years ago and I’m currently reading through all the Titan ranges(which I’m enjoying a lot, especially 13’s run). Once I finish that I’ll probably check out the IDW ranges, but I haven’t heard great things about them.

Just got the Titan Doctor Who comics, I’m afraid.

For me, when I think of IDW, I think of My Little Pony comics, actually, as they’ve had the rights for that for a good while, and I’ve read a fair amount of those.

Hang on, I thought you said somewhere about getting the Ten and Eleven archives in a Humble Bundle?

Those are IDW.

The Archive volumes, while published by Titan, actually contain the IDW comic runs.

So you most probably actually have IDW comics too!

Alright. They didn’t actually mention IDW anywhere in the collection, so I’d assumed it was just by Titan…

If you have Agent Provocateur and The Forgotten in that first volume then it’s definitely the IDW comics.

Seems like it. Just got confused by Titan rebranding it as theirs…

I keep getting distracted now by that hideous creature that I think is supposed to be Hartnell…

Well, that’s one mystery solved! I realized these weren’t Titan comics or at least not in their normal run, but hadn’t gotten around to looking up what they were

I have only read the first 8 Issues of the Prisoners of Time, I enjoyed the issue with Two the most, it was a really lovely lowkey but still high scale of an adventure, which I think is perfect for the Medium of Comics. I might finish that Series soon and maybe jump around reading more of it, since I saw most of the Stories were fairly shorter than a lot of the Titan Run. I must admit Comics Who, as much as I do really enjoy certain Comic Runs is such an unfamiliar Thing to me but excited to get around to it properly (especially with the classic Doctors)!

Oh Basically answered it with the second Doctor Comic, didn’t I? Besides that I think they did the one with tenth dreaming which was visually stunning with some lovely things to it (I could be wrong, so correct me if I am wrong).

I really want to read it badly, heard a lot of things about it and as a Fan of both of it, I am excited to get around to it eventually, I hope!

For IDW, I’ve read and own:
Agent Provocateur
The Forgotten
The Whispering Gallery
The Time Machination
Autopia
Black Death White Life
Room with a Deja View
Cold-Blooded War
Fugitive
Ripper’s Curse
When Worlds Collide
Body Snatched
As Time Goes By

My favorites of these were Ripper’s Curse and then Body Snatched. A least favorite is not standing out in my memory. It’s been a while since I read the Tenth Doctor ones.

I have not read the Star Trek crossover.

I like threads like this because it reminds me that I’ve reviewed stories on my blog that need moving over to the site.

There’s some good IDW stuff. Of the ones I’ve reviewed I’d recommend Dead Man’s Hand, The Time Machination and They Think It’s All Over.

I would not recommend Ripper’s Curse. The art is horrid.

Prisoners of Time is huge fun and I did read Agent Provocateur but can’t remember much about it.
