Following his return in 2019’s The Diary of River Song Series 5, Eric Roberts’ incarnation went on to have a spin-off: Master! which was released in 2021. It was followed by two further seasons in 2022 and 2024 respectively.
I’ve really enjoyed Roberts Master. I’ve only listened to the first series which I thought was quite good, need to catch up on the other two.
We also had him reunited with Eight in Day of the Master, hoping that we’ll hear them encounter each other more!
I’ve just started S1 hence the thread! Really enjoyed the premiere. Seems to be an overarching story which I love, shame we didn’t really get that for Missy or the Spy Master.
Yess I need more of them!!
Roberts was a standout for me when I listened to Masterful a couple of weeks ago so I’m excited to check out his series at some point, I currently only own series one
I wasn’t really a fan of his Master in the TVM but his BF stuff has put him a lot higher in my rankings
I love the Master! series.
Pitting Eric Roberts’ Master against Vienna Salvatori after she has “turned good” is a really good move. The Master is the villain here even in his own series
And Eric Roberts just brings this vicious glee at being evil for the sake of it and inflicting pain and death on others.
I think there’s a bit of a through line from Geoffrey Beevers’ Master and Roberts’ in this regard.
I never got quite the same feeling from Gomez, McQueen or Jacobi.
You never got the vicious glee in being evil… from Jacobi’s Master??? Have you heard any of the War Master audios???
I’ve listened to his first five seasons + his Dark Gallifrey audios and I don’t really feel like he even comes close to other Masters on that front…
When I compare him to Eric Roberts’ Master he feels decidedly vanilla.
I am just not that big a fan of the War Master on audio. I want to be a part of that hype but I just don’t see it
See, I love Jacobi’s Master. There’s such calculating menace, a vindictive glee. He’s outstanding.
However, I do know what you mean abot Roberts’ portrayal. There’s this constant simmering rage, a nastiness like a coiled spring. His Master is every bit as nasty but in a more visceral barely restrained sense. Superb.
