I Always Dress for the Occasion - A Master! Thread

Following his return in 2019’s The Diary of River Song Series 5, Eric Roberts’ incarnation went on to have a spin-off: Master! which was released in 2021. It was followed by two further seasons in 2022 and 2024 respectively.

I’ve really enjoyed Roberts Master. I’ve only listened to the first series which I thought was quite good, need to catch up on the other two.
We also had him reunited with Eight in Day of the Master, hoping that we’ll hear them encounter each other more!

I’ve just started S1 hence the thread! Really enjoyed the premiere. Seems to be an overarching story which I love, shame we didn’t really get that for Missy or the Spy Master.

Yess I need more of them!!

Roberts was a standout for me when I listened to Masterful a couple of weeks ago so I’m excited to check out his series at some point, I currently only own series one

I wasn’t really a fan of his Master in the TVM but his BF stuff has put him a lot higher in my rankings

I love the Master! series.
Pitting Eric Roberts’ Master against Vienna Salvatori after she has “turned good” is a really good move. The Master is the villain here even in his own series

And Eric Roberts just brings this vicious glee at being evil for the sake of it and inflicting pain and death on others.
I think there’s a bit of a through line from Geoffrey Beevers’ Master and Roberts’ in this regard.
I never got quite the same feeling from Gomez, McQueen or Jacobi.

You never got the vicious glee in being evil… from Jacobi’s Master??? Have you heard any of the War Master audios???

I’ve listened to his first five seasons + his Dark Gallifrey audios and I don’t really feel like he even comes close to other Masters on that front…
When I compare him to Eric Roberts’ Master he feels decidedly vanilla.

I am just not that big a fan of the War Master on audio. I want to be a part of that hype but I just don’t see it :person_shrugging:

See, I love Jacobi’s Master. There’s such calculating menace, a vindictive glee. He’s outstanding.

However, I do know what you mean abot Roberts’ portrayal. There’s this constant simmering rage, a nastiness like a coiled spring. His Master is every bit as nasty but in a more visceral barely restrained sense. Superb.

After listening to Call Me Master I’ve decided to start Nemesis Express today. Partway through the first episode and it’s good so far. Roberts Master is an interest, weird point in the Masters timeline and I’m glad we’re getting more of him.

Finished S1E2, really liking this range so far! Its giving me what I love from The War Master range, an arc. CMM and Missy range take notes!

I enjoyed the first Master! set but never got round to the later ones; I’ll add them to my ever growing backlog lol

Just finished S1, LOVED it. One key difference compared to Missy I’ve noticed, the person who defeats him here is evenly matched. In Missy she gets bested by people who she really should just kill.

I finished Nemesis Express today and enjoyed it overall. The last story was very average and forgettable but I still enjoyed my time and Roberts is a great Master, looking forward to getting the third set at some point.

Started Nemesis Express, not a huge fan of the first story unfortunately. Just felt like the first episode from the previous set, but in a different setting.

Finished Nemesis Express… It literally was just a rehash of the first series even down to the ending?? Not a huge fan, hopefully Planet Doom is better.

Oh I loved the way The Master and Vienna went head to head on a giant space train!
I don’t quite get how you think it’s so similar to the first season, apart from the Master being resurrected once more. Tonally they are quite different, and with Passion added as Vienna’s sidekick/companion I find it really adds something.
If you haven’t already, I really recommend going back and listening to some of Vienna’s earlier adventures in Big Finish - she’s evolved quite a bit as a character from her initial outing in the Main Range adventure “The Shadow Heart” :slightly_smiling_face:

Personally I would say that Planet Doom is the best of the three seasons :slightly_smiling_face:

I am interested in hearing more of Vienna, I liked her a lot so I’ll definitely check them out at some point. Honestly I just didn’t vibe with this one, I think whilst different tonally the structure is very similar. Vienna vs the Master, extra main character who helps foil him, him being flung back into the vortex again. I’m getting so tired of that, can they just resurrect him for good :sob:

Excited for Planet Doom!

Finished Planet Doom! Really enjoyed it, and especially Passion/Vienna’s relationship in the third ep I thought that was just lovely.

Really hope to hear more from them, I definitely wanna pick up more Vienna stuff now! Which is funny to say, considering she’s the reason I didn’t listen to this for so long. (Because I didn’t know her and didn’t want to be confused).
