Tim Foley is rapidly becoming the new John Dorney
Just finished this and HOLY F*CKING SHIT. So glad I listened to this spoiler free. And outside of that, itās just such an immaculately created time travel story. I already thought at the first two parts man, this is epic and large, but no, that was nothing. That museum with the Hooklight at the beginning? The trauma the characters go through in that first hour? Nothing. They aināt seen nothing yet. Itās all escalated so perfectly.
If thereās anyone reading this, considering if they sh- YES. THE ANSWER IS YES. YOU SHOULD. My god. Who even cares about Season 2 anymore I need Hooklight 2 now.
OH MY GOD F*CK WHAT EXCUSE ME HOOKLIGHT WHAT
This was incredible. It was so incredibly good. The escalation throughout the story was perfect. I need Hooklight 2 immediately damn
Iām in Episode 3 now and the Great Mother is giving us a lore dump. Iām getting all sorts of vibes from this story: Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion, Arabian Nights, the disappearance of the Everin is giving me massive Dwemer vibes from the Elder Scrolls series. This is amazing.
This is the appropriate reaction to anything written by Tim Foley
Could everyone please stop making this sound so damn good. I canāt justify buying it at the moment!!
(Iām also wary because everyone raved about Genesis of the Cybermen and I was a bit underwhelmed by that one).
Iād be wary too, if i didnāt know who the author was
Iām loving the Lord of the Rings references and parallels. At the moment, Frodo has been been tasked with taking the Ring to the fires of Mount Doom from whence it was forged.
As it stands, Iād call Tim Foley Big Finishās current best and most consistent writer
Just reached the end of Episode 4 with the Doctorās discovery of Nyssa at the end of the second age. This just keeps building and throwing crazy impossible things at us. Iāve still got two more episodes and I have absolutely no idea how this is going to play out.
Just got informed that my CD set for this has been released from customs and should be arriving by the weekend! So excited to listen to it, everyone has been making it sound so good.
Finished part 3 this morning. Really enjoying it so far!
Maybe Iāll change my mind after finishing Hooklight but itās still Dorney for me tbh. Foley is up there though!
Finished this this morning. Okay, that is an interesting place to leave things. Double Spoiler appeared earlier than I expected, but Iām not complaining as I love double spoiler. I know that weāre only half done with this, so itāll be interesting to see where this goes. There are so many dangling threads that I really hope they stick the landing. I have total faith that they will, Iām just optomistically cautious. That said, May canāt get here soon enough.
Started episode 4 on my way home from work, and ended up binging through to the end. I look forward to relistening to the whole story sometime as it seems it will be rewarding to relisten to. The gradual escalation and world building in this first half is amazing and Iām sure part 2 will be just as good, Tim Foley is proving an incredibly reliable writer. The twist at the end was something I did not expect at all and put a massive smile on my face!
So I was enjoying parts 1-5 a lot but not quite loving them. With each part it got better and better but never quite hit me the way it hit yāall.
And then part 6 was a perfect half hour of tension and dread, and so much of the build up coming together. And oh Paul McGann??? What in TARNATION is my guy doing here??? And he gets a post credit scene too???
Genuinely amazing place to end it for now, canāt wait to see what the hell Hooklight 2 is gonna be like!
Just finished. Brilliant. Instantly preordered Hooklight 2.
Here I am, joining the choir. This is quite unlike anything BF has released in a long time - epic, mystical, sprawling, rich in worldbuilding and characterisation. Itās a slow burn that keeps escalating until the amazing Part 6, and that gobsmack reveal. My only gripe is the pacing and the fact that this is a bit hard to follow at times.
8/10
Hooklight is something rare: a Fifth Doctor epic that dares to break the mould. Itās sprawling, intricate, and occasionally overwhelmingābut also rich in imagination, with a scope and ambition almost unmatched in Big Finishās back catalogue. Fans of epic fantasy, grand quests, and deep myth-building will find a lot to love, and the storytelling rewards patient listeners with a dramatic, genuinely surprising mid-point twist. A slow burnābut one that glows bright.

I love this direction BF are taking lately where theyāre giving entire boxsets to writers, its paying off!
Absolutely! Itās the single most exciting thing about BF at the moment for me. I love it!
