Yes I agree, but also I’m really just commenting on the trope where writers say “oh, so-and-so was actually bisexual, but we just never put any mention of it in the text at all”. I think that’s a bit of a cop-out, if there’s no way of knowing from watching the show that someone feels that way then I don’t think it’s good representation.
As an example (although I hate to bring this up), the idea that Dumbledore is gay was very tacked on last minute by JK Rowling. It may have been explored more in the Fantastic Beasts movies, I dunno, I had no time for them.

I agree with your points, I just wanted to point this out.

Just adding this here, absolutely no disagreement from me
“It’s a very imaginative act to watch Doctor Who, and I think gay people are better and cleverer and more imaginative than anyone else.”

Clara is also explicitly called bisexual in Doctor Who Magazine

Nice mention of Section 28 as well, a piece of legislation which pretty much ruined my childhood

If he is that clever then how come he didn’t have a single story in the latest DWM top 10 poll?

Yeah all their on screen relationships were heterosexual. As you say very Moffat. Their bisexuality reduced to quips. He got better with Bill Potts (currently rewatching her season).
I wonder can straight men write good queer characters? I say that as someone who has an idea for a 13 & Yaz story that I’m slowly very slowly writing.

No I haven’t, but it sounds good! Added to my watchlist*
[*] unfortunately my watch list has hundreds of entries so I’ve no idea when I’ll get around to watching…

Straight guy here, but I did have a couple of suggestions, apologies if these are actually already here and I missed them:
-
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. I know theres already a lot of Jack in the list from Torchwood, but this is pretty important as the first episode to feature an openly queer companion (on-screen).
-
Victory of the Doctor. You’ve got the episode before it which might be enough, but given that this episode begins and ends with the companions having a gay wedding it could be included.
Also seconding Friend of the Family mentioned above.
Also also, not one for the list, but to those who don’t know I believe Jemma Redgrave’s own headcanon is that Kate Stewart has either a wife or an ex wife, but that’s never been confirmed in any stories.

Oh yes, for me this was definitely a big moment. After seeing Dalek I decided I love this show, and then a few weeks later there’s this queer guy who is now one of the recurring roles?!? It propelled the show to my #1 straight away

As a teacher, the fact Section 28 ever existed angers me so much. We’ve had children in school with same sex parents and to think there was once legislation that prevented us from speaking about those actual children’s families as ‘acceptable’ or ‘normal’ is frankly disgusting.
We actually have a child in Year 6 who has made the decision to use she/her pronouns and to dress as a girl (having be born male). It all had to be run past govenors in terms of school policies (uniform, toilets etc) but has been fully accepted really quickly (so quickly, it actually surprised me). As far as I’m aware Jay is fully accepted by her peers and she confidently conducts herself around school.
And we are a church school so there is an added layer of ‘biblical’ thought in the mix but thankfully our staff are pretty vocal at not allowing anything discriminatory to pass muster. My head can be a bit old-fashioned Christian about things but she is more open now that she used to be, I think. And the few actual practising Christians on the staff (including me) don’t tend to think the same as her so she has to temper any personal feelings anyway.
And as a parent of two LGBQT+ children, one of whom is also at a church school, it is heartening that both have Pride clubs at their schools and are allowed to just be themselves (as much as teenagers ever can be with the usual judgements from their peers whether straight, gay or anything else).

It doesn’t hit me so much any more, but I wish I could go back and slap myself in the 90s and let me know that calling people fag and gay is going to hurt people. I know how much certain derogatory terms hurt me.

Someone needs to tell that to Rose!

I was watching a reaction on YouTube a few weeks ago, and when this moment came up, it made me pause for a second. I had a mantra of “2005. 2005. 2005.” running through my head.

It’s also the one with:
DOCTOR: I can dance! I can dance!
ROSE: Actually, Doctor, I thought Jack might like this dance.
DOCTOR: I’m sure he would, Rose. I’m absolutely certain. But who with?
Which is such a great 9 moment…

Also gonna give some love to Kate Stewart! She’s not quite canonically queer, but Jemma Redgrave has said that she always imagined that Kate is married to a woman, and there’s definitely a big chunk of fandom (including myself) that sees her as a lesbian.

Spoilers for the recently released 5DA audio The Merfolk Murders:
Not sure if it would count but in this audio they give Adric a male love interest, and while they don’t outright say they had a crush on each other (it’s set in the 1940s so even in universe they had to be Subtle about it) they certainly flirt A Lot and it was deliberately written that way. Honestly was so cute except for [heartbreaking plot twist at the end].
