Wow… I can get attached and feel emotion from reading and listening and stuff but I simply don’t see anything so I suppose yes, the tension is different, and yes, I don’t feel any reaction to food on the page even if it’s described super yummily. I might go wow, sounds yummy but that’s about it. I can’t even describe what it is that I like about audio drama, because (as you may know), I love it so so much even though it is just words in my ears. I think it must be really cool to be able to picture things, but also on the flip-side, it’s why written gore and horror doesn’t ick me out as much as it does in visual media where I am a little baby haha
Not quite as good as the previous story but I enjoyed The Song of the Reed Man. It really could’ve done with being twenty minutes shorter but the setting and atmosphere make up for that somewhat, 7/10
Doctor, Doctor Doctor was okay – could have been scarier! I love the idea of the Doctor as the monster – a terrifying spectre haunting a bunch of kids. Of course the reveal that it’s a creature using the Doctor’s form is a bit disappointing, and I feel the ending explains rather too much. I also didn’t think the characters were much to write home about. But I looove McCoy in a spooky story!
Woah. I just finished Office Space. I will be thinking about that one for a long time. Genuinely horrifying in all the best ways. Perfect audio.
Just downloaded these, but I’m waiting until Halloween weekend when we have a long car drive to go visit friends (in one of the “most haunted” towns in the US, where we’re doing the country’s oldest ghost tour)

Didn’t really care for The Song of the Reed Man. Better in ideas than in execution. I thought Tim Treloar was quite good, but I felt like the Krynoids got reduced to a rather boring monster-of-the-week kind of role. The body horror here probably would’ve worked better if this was a visual story. 2.5/5 stars from me. Excited to get to the episodes that people are saying are the best of the set.
And was that a cheeky reference to Wild Blue Yonder at the very end when Jo sprinkles the salt?
Really enjoyed Office Space, a really compelling main cast, and it was easily the spookiest of the stories in this boxset, 9/10
Also Chester reference!!!
Laughing at how absolutely over it Peter Davison sounds in the extras for Overworked.
I’m listening to one of these a week across October. Started today with Doctor, Doctor, Doctor. What a fantastic little story! Perfect for Halloween and definitively Doctor Who. This would have been great on telly - and could have been made on a very modest budget.
The conceit is simple enough. A creepy and high-concept horror, with typically DW sci fi explanations. This allows the story to focus on character and atmosphere. Given that the supporting cast only have this story, they’re nicely written and well performed. Overall, a superb opener to the year’s Halloween set. I’m so glad that the first set was successful enough to justify a follow up. I’m really looking forward to the remaining three stories. October is shaping up to be a good month for DW!
This was exactly my thought! I would have been so pleased with this story on its own, that the other three feel like a sweet bonus!
Doctor… Doctor… Doctor…

Well you guys were right.
Office Space is an absolute banger.
I love when villians you’d think wouldn’t work well on audio prove me wrong. The weeping Angels and Vashta Nerada surprisingly work really well in this medium.
Just one story left now. Will hopefully do it tomorrow!
Doctor3 set the bar pretty high, Reed Man met it, then Office Space cleared it, and Overworked also hit it. Once again, an outstanding set overall!
I didn’t think anything could beat Office Space and then Overworked comes along with it’s terrifying yet beautifully tragic plot. Seems like the kind of story that really should be adapted into a film of some sorts, 10/10
Halfway through the set at this point. Really enjoyed Doctor, Doctor, Doctor. It gave McCoy a chance to show off being sinister which I love. The Song of the Reed Man was painfully standard, only saved by Trelor and Manning.
Now I’ve finished the set and once again I’m surprised at how well Georgia Cook (and Fio Trethewey) understands how to do a horror story. Love how unflinching it is and the sound design of Office Space knowing when it needs to squelch.
Overworked was very good too, a nice slight levity to it that might have been a bit of a double edged sword.
Office Space is another hit after Party Favours. It’s an atmospheric base under siege that would work well as a stand-alone story as aside from the Vashta Nerada (whose abilities don’t require much exposition anyway) it doesn’t lean on being part of the Whoniverse and could easily be retooled as a regular call center under siege. The story presents a new level of cunning, where Flesh is revealed to be the main antagonist having manipulated the characters into putting themselves in danger and unknowingly working towards its freedom, playing on Max’s naivety.
4 great stories. Obviously Office Space is the highlight, but I enjoyed them all. Much better than last year’s set
Just finished Office Space, what a banger! Finally a story in this set which is not merely great but is also scary haha. Just as good as last year’s highlight Party Favours, I also loved Georgia Cook’s Spirit Of The Season, so this is the third 5/5 I’m happy to give her work. Is that new theme arrangement the version they’re using in UNIT: Eras? I haven’t picked that up yet. The idea for this setting is really cool on its own, cast is excellent. 5/5!
Finished the last one, Overworked is a lovely little story, a nice compact idea that had some good characters and some particularly lovely speeches for Peter Davison. Again, not exactly scary to me, but atmospheric for sure and well-written. This year’s set was stronger than the first! Last year I really didn’t like Bramble King, and I was so-so on Merlin’s Trap, but I liked all four of these. My faves were Reed Man and Office Space, both excellent, but I really enjoyed all four!
Song of the Reed Man… maybe my tolerance for boring stories is going down but this was not it! Very predictable with stock characters and zero scares. I wish I loved it more because it deals with plants (it even namedrops mugwort!) but I was just so bored…
