💀 Get into Faction Paradox with us! ”Weapons Grade Snake Oil” (Jul–Aug 2025)

If you don’t know what Faction Paradox is: It’s a long-running multi-media Doctor Who spinoff about goth time lords who do freaky things. It’s the black sheep; the occult sci-fi progeny of Doctor Who! More details in @glass_shard’s guide.

Faction Paradox has a reputation of being difficult to get into, but it’s greatly exaggerated
and now that we’re doing it together, it’s doubly easy! No prerequisite reading. Join us!

Welcome; welcome. At last, the time has come to commence the first tricentennial Faction Paradox book club.

Between July 9th and August 8th, we will be reading the novel Weapons Grade Snake Oil and discussing it as we go in this very thread.

The book can be purchased from Obverse Books in both paper and e-book form, and requires no prior reading or knowledge, except perhaps that Faction Paradox are a group of disgruntled, dramatic time lords who use blood rituals in place of tech gadgets. It’s a fast-paced read with excitingly weird sci-fi concepts!

Come! Let us get stuck into it!!! (ˌ●̙̂ ̟ ̟̎ ̟ ̘●̂˻)

i’m only two chapters in but there’s a character named Haribeaux that looks like a gummy bear so i can already tell this is a great book

I’ve read the first six chapters of Act I! Really enjoying this so far. Love the Eleven Day Empire as a setting and loving Sojourner so far!

I didn’t expect to get through this so quickly! I’m on something like chapter 30 and I started this morning

It feels like the author just looked at every wild idea and thought ‘why not?’

Kelsey Hooper is president of Pluto and is bonded to a giant robot elephant. Father Christmas is here. So is Anne Bonny the pirate queen. And there is a TARDIS that is literally a kraken.

It’s brilliant! Are all Faction Paradox books like this?
I think I do need a Cousin Chantelle translator though, because what is she saying?

Just read first four chapters before going to bed! Very nice, the book moves on pretty fast. I also listened to first two BBV’s Faction Paradox Audios (both of them are also set in The Eleven Day Empire), so you can say I’m slowly converting into a Faction Paradox enthusiast

Wait til you find out who he’s supposed to be
(link isn’t spoilers, but might take away the fun of working it out yourself!)

The Kraken is crazy!! I love when TARDISes (sorry, non-specific timeships) are weird and biological. She’s great.

Finished Act I now! Very much enjoying this book.

I’ve just reached chapter 12
loving it! It’s crazy and stupid (everything Doctor Who should be imo)! /affectionate

Here are my thoughts so far:

  • There’s a bit of similarity between Sojourner’s neural link with L-Event and His Dark Materials’ dĂŠmons, which is fun and pretty cool :sunglasses:

  • Sojourner’s origin story is similar to Fitz’s (a bit, at least, in the sense that biodata and Faction Paradox are involved)
But unlike Fitz, she doesn’t have any qualms about being a different person when she is reborn (maybe because she only has to do it once?). And also, wow, her dedication to escaping the Faction is very impressive

  • Indeterminatrix
like Imperiatrix??? (Ok, it’s a long shot but I’m in the mood for tenuous connections[1])

  • “A pitiless maritime disaster disguised as a woman” is a brilliant line!

  • Father Christemas re Grandfather Paradox: "He settles for being the mysterious ponce for all eternity!”
I think this is an adequate description of the Doctor at any point tbh /lh

  1. The connection is literally that they both end in -atrix ↩

I already read this book before the Club even started (didn’t know if I would be busy so I read it in advance!)
I am not sure if I have enough to add to this other than I really thought it was brilliant. It really felt like somebody said: “Okay what are some bonkers Idea I can come up with?” and really using most if not all of them. It has creativity written all over it, no wonder it’s rated so highly on the Guide!
Prose-wise it’s also quite well-written, in a way where you can easily read a lot of it at once, which is always a big plus point in my Book. Very pleased of this being one of my first Prose Faction Paradox Exposures!

Over halfway through now!

Really enjoying this. My only quibble is that it feels like the plot is only just starting. I’m not that bothered because the characters are so fun, but it is interesting. I’m particularly enjoying the world building of Pluto and Eris.

It looks like the plot is shaping up for a heist next!

Finished the second half today—that was a blast. Loved the pace and the plot was extremely fun. Poor Ellie <\3 but relieved she’s not gone forever! Very much Faction Paradox does a heist movie, and very fun.

Looking forward to reading other people’s reactions!
