Will be interesting to hear how this compares to Spare Parts which I love.
I guess there are people turning into Cybermen in this one as well!
Yep. I’m waiting for the poignant moment when a parent, with tears in their eyes, turns to their cyber-converted child & says.
I love Spare Parts and the Season 19 team, so I imagine I’ll listen to this at the earliest possible opportunity.
1 part in and the story has not gone the way I expected, but I’m engrossed in the story completely.
Oh the music in this was just… Nothing short of incredible. One of the best BF scores, genuinely. I do feel the story missed a trick not playing into the fact its (as BF put it) a different timeline/not canon to ours, by not killing/converting Adric or Nyssa. Would’ve added so much gravitas to this already good story.
4.5/5 for me, review below!
This sounds promising! I’m listening to it tonight!
Looking forward to listening, probably on the weekend!
I’ve listened to the first two parts. It’s really, really good. Different enough from Spare Parts to stand on its own, but very effective nonetheless. Great performances and the soundtrack is something else!
Three parts in and this is a really strong story. The soundtrack is one of the strongest Big Finish soundtracks in my opinion, and the story is distinct enough from Spare Parts that I’m not comparing the two as I listen. Very excited to finish this one off.
I’d really prefer if we not compare it to spare parts, cant two legends coexist?
I’m going with this! I’m two episodes in, and this is a terrific story so far. It’s very atmospheric and has superb sound design. David Roocroft’s score is exceptional, with echoes of Paddy Kingsland’s stuff if my audio circuits don’t desert me! And the story contains a scene to rival Yvonne Hartley’s heart-breaking conversion from Spare Parts.
I like Matthew Waterhouse’s performance here. Now that he doesn’t seem so concerned with sounding the same as he did 45 years ago, he turns in perhaps his best performance. Of course, it helps that he’s not written as a petulant teen. This is my favourite Adric performance.
So far, so very good!
So I kinda bought this one for the cover, and because I find Mondas lore interesting, despite the fact I havent started 5’s era yet. Is it best I wait to listen until after i finish 5’s era, or is it accessible enough to listen to immediately? I vaguely know what happens to his companions and everything. If i do enjoy his era too, i’m totally also buying Goth Opera for that gorgeous cover too lol
I’d say its pretty accessible yeah!! There’s just references to Tenth Planet.
Great, thanks! =)
I can definitely recommend Goth Opera, I loved that one. There’s only brief references to Snakedance at the start of the story, and other than that it’s pretty much standalone. It’s well written and performed as well.
I mayy then buy the CD version earlier than I expected haha, thanks sm
Yeah, this was a brilliant release. Exciting, tense, gripping, dark, and dramatic. It has superb performances, a very good soundtrack, strong sound design, flawless cliffhangers, and an engaging story.
Genesis of the Cybermen is a dark, tragic masterpiece that stands alongside Spare Parts as one of the most compelling Cybermen origin stories. With its Shakespearean family conflict, gripping emotional stakes, and a suffocating sense of inevitability, it’s an unforgettable tale that leaves a lasting impact.
A hauntingly brilliant exploration of the Cybermen’s birth, this lost story would have been an instant classic had it made it to the screen.
