General Discussion for Ranking Game

Yeah, the smugglers are pretty boring, at least in its current state.

I’m with @TARDIS32 here. The Smugglers is better than it’s being given credit for.

Where we agree must be truth.

As this Forum’s Smuggler Fan’s Number 1, I must voice my disappointment at it being the last :pensive: especially since it’s much better than both other Pirate Episodes that are above it!!

I’m glad Legend was down the bottom. Smugglers should’ve been above it though.

I think the issue here was that Smugglers started second to last, one person liked Legend more than Smugglers, and no one liked Smugglers enough to raise it back up. Anyone that liked it had other episodes they wanted to raise more…

You know, a few suggestions for next one:
Start them in reverse order of the ratings next time, so they all start out in totally the wrong order.
Instead of saying you can bump one item one or two up on the list, how about this? You have two points, and you can spend each point to bump an item up. You could bump the same item up twice, or two different items.

I have a slightly different approach. I probably the only person who thinks this (and I realize it’s probably because I haven’t seen as many Classic serials compared to others), but I find the ranking game a limiting so far because you can’t downvote. With the Nautical game, there’s only so many times I can upvote Planet of Fire knowing it’ll never be ranked high compared to episodes I don’t like, but can’t downvote.

It makes the game more futile compared to the elimination style where you could actually knock pawns off the board.

How about start them in airing order? That way there’s no degree of priming the participants to rank them one way or the other.

What about two total moves that can be used in either direction? Can move one up two, two up one, one up one down, two down one, or one down two.

Possible. Might give a bit of a new Who bias, though, with all new Who episodes starting near the top, and there are plenty of people who’ve seen more new Who then Classic.

I basically think we need a downvote. I miss that from the elim games…

I’d go oldest at top. Or could throw them through an RNG.

I was just about to suggest a random order and two total moves, which can be used either to downvote, upvote or both. That way, there’s still a bit more strategy to it, but we’re not actually eliminating anything.

RNG would be fine, too. I just like the idea of starting with the least liked at the top because it’d encourage more involvement from people as it’s less likely they’ll actually like the current ranking for most of the game.

Basically, everyone has to try and get all the good ones to the top…

The one thing about elimination was that once something you want at the top gets eliminated, you can move on to something else. With ranking, everything just stays there the whole time.

Also, if we had mixed turns, where you could do up and down, what order is it, do the up first or the down first? For things that are next to each other, order can matter.

For example, if you had something like (top) 1 2 3 4 5 (bottom), say you wanted to move 2 down and 3 up. If you do 2 down first, then 3 up, you get 3 1 2 4 5, but if you do it the other way, you get 1 3 4 2 5. It might be tricky to follow the accuracy of the turns.

Could have it where one day you can only upvote, one day you can only downvote?

Also, could even go by season? Or what about companions? I’m not sure 100% what’s been done as I joined the forum only a few months ago.

Ranking game is new, we’ve done 2, both were episode based.
