It’s making me think if there’s any way I could make it work in 2027 or 2028…
There’s no way I could do it while studying but I was already planning to take a break after my bachelor’s degree
Did personally have a bit of a problem with them genderflipping constantine (there’s surprisingly little bi male rep out there), but she was still great in Sandman too!
Given the phrasing of the announcement, I’m hoping they’re just being dramatic about moving to a new location or something… but if they’re not, who wants to help me organize a Doctor Who con in Omaha in the next 5 years? It’s in the middle of the country so everyone except me can travel roughly the same distance ![]()
I quite enjoyed myself at this con, I predictably spent an amount of money I’m not proud of on books, and although I didn’t sign up for the photo ops I did try to get autographs and meet everybody. Had to miss out on a few people but I tried to strategize and miss the ones that are Chicago TARDIS regulars, so hopefully I’ll get another chance ![]()
I couldn’t make it to the evening meetup the first night but I did run into a couple of you by chance anyways and it was a lot of fun to meet you.
The “straw that broke the camel’s back” in terms of convincing me to go was seeing that Paul Magrs would be attending. He’s my favorite writer, up there with the Strugatskys and Vonnegut and such (I specify because when I told him Blue Angel was my favorite book, he asked me “How many books have you read?” like he couldn’t believe it.) We had a lovely conversation I’ll never forget, he and Jeremy signed my book, and he asked for a picture with me!! So this trip was really special for me and I’m so glad I decided to go.
I’ll be in school and unable to attend next year, but I may see some of you at Chicago TARDIS this year if I’m up to it when the time comes. I’m definitely going to try to come back to Gally in 2027, though.
So about it ending in 2028. Shaun Lyon has been doing this for 35 years, and is now in his 50s and getting tired when it comes to running this thing every year. The gist of the announcement is that rather than hand it off to other hands where it may change into something unrecognizable, something that’s Gallifrey One in name only, the decision is that Lyon and the others in charge would rather bring Gallifrey One to an end on its own terms, like a writer knowing when their story should end. I can respect that, all good things have to come to an end eventually. There is more information to come and he did tease in the announcement that something may come up to take its place.
I’ve heard rumors, and let me stress that these are rumors that aren’t backed up by anything concrete, that someone else who was a frequent guest will be essentially taking over, and the con will be sort of regenerating. It won’t be allowed to use Gallifrey in its name, and it may not be exclusively a Doctor Who convention 2029 and onward. I’m fine with it changing hands as long as it stays the independent non-profit convention it’s always been. I would be immensely disappointed though if it stopped being specifically a Doctor Who convention though. So much of the appeal for me is that it’s all Doctor Who, with maybe an occasional panel for something else like Trek or Blake’s 7. I don’t really want it to become about other things or be a more generic con. I’m, and I’m sure many of the attendees are, there for Doctor Who, full stop.
Now I’m getting paranoid that that was something I shouldn’t have posted.
Edit: I removed the name
Coincidentally, 2028 is the year of the Los Angeles Olympics. Are these facts related?
It’s probably also the year we will finally see Season 3 of Doctor Who…
What about the soundtrack for series 10? Is that coming then as well?..
Try 2082 instead!
I think we’re seeing that by 2828 at the absolute earliest.
I’ve heard someone who was at the con has tested positive for COVID, so anyone here who went, if you start to show symptoms, or otherwise suspect you may have it, get checked. Just passing on the info.
Looks like Showmasters will be taking over to run a successor convention
Have to admit that their poor track record in how they run their bigger conventions in the UK has me a bit worried, but I’m still hopeful that this will be a worthy continuation of the spirit of the convention
My hope is that the people Shaun Lyon has essentially named as his successors will be able to keep Showmasters in check, and maintain the spirit of Gally after 2028, as the announcement seems to suggest is the idea.
I did raise my eyebrow at the bit where jokes about “Gallifrey Two” being considered disrespectful though.
And if the worst does happen, there’s still L.I. Who (Long Island NY), Chicago TARDIS, CONsole Room (Minneapolis) and others to choose from.
We should set up a TARDIS Guide Con! It could be the new Gallifrey One! With an Elimination Game that all attendees could play, and a quiz corner for hard episode quizzes and a whole section for K9!
I was super considering Chicago Tardis- it would cut entire hours off both my flights and jet lag, which was the real issue when i came to gally last year- but chicago in the winter sounds Terrifying to my warm-climate, frail-sickly self.
Though I heard Gally this year wasn’t much sunshine either…
Thursday was rain, but the rest was fine
idk, iirc my partner (more like my representative to the fair nation of gally this year XD) still said it was kinda chilly. I’ll as it when I see it soon <3
Don’t forget about a live version of the read-along.
I really enjoy LIWho, it’s localish enough to me to be a ncie one to go to yearly, and I’ve heard good stuff about Chicago Tardis
