Halloween was basically not a thing in Denmark at all like 15 years ago, really weird seeing pumpkins everywhere these days…
And kids get to trick-or-treat twice a year here, when I only got one a year growing up :triumph::wink:

We have another tradition in the spring, Fastelavn, where kids dress up and go trick-or-treat, and stand in a queue to hit a wooden barrel with a picture of a black cat on it, filled with candy, with a bat and get crowned King or Queen when it falls down. (Up until the 1800s there was an actual cat in the barrel…)

We used to do our ”trick or treat” at easter where we dressed as witches and got candy.

I feel you! Most grocery stores here in Finland have already begun selling Christmas sweets and other stuff. It seems Christmas preparations begin earlier every year.

It’s the same over here. Halloween has steadily grown in popularity over here, and I blame the Americans! Our retailers have noted the financial gain of another big holiday in the middle of a dark and dreary period, so they go all in with increasing force every year.

Yup, this is the traditional trick or treat time in Finland as well, we share this tradition with Sweden. It’s less spooky and more cute though. The children hand out willow branches and recite a short rhyme in exchange for sweets.

Halloween wasn’t really a thing here in the UK either when I was a kid. Its only the last 15 years it’s taken over as basically another commercial opportunity for shops. The US has a lot to answer for.

I’m waiting for the first instances of Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas is You playing in every single store. That’s when I know it’s coming!

The business I work for has been sending out the early Christmas stuff to stores since end July. A store I was at a week ago already had 1/3 of a warehouse full of stuff.

EDIT: I also know someone who works in the supply section of a large supermarket chain in the UK. They have already put their order in for Christmas stuff for 2025.

Christmas isn’t much of a thing here (not an awful lot of Christians where I live) and every year I’m ever more grateful for that. Halloween isn’t a thing either, which is much more disappointing. We also have our spring version, but it’s not spooky or scary so it’s really not the same.

Another British legend is gone! My childhood favourite (Professor McGonagall) and the heart of Downton Abbey! Sadly, never part of Doctor Who. Rest in peace, Dame Maggie!

Today at my college cafeteria, they had rice pudding. Because the cafeteria is all you can eat style, I guess this means that there was…

UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING FOR EVERYONE!

I don’t know if anyone else is following along with the Chappell Roan drama, but it’s making me really sad and nervous to see another artist basically getting the Lizzo treatment in real time.

By this, I mean that both Lizzo and Chappell are highly musically talented, and their general brands and music appeal to non-mainstream lifestyles and very specifically the LGBTQetc communities.

It’s beginning to feel like a pattern now where these very outspoken and largely queer artists are given huge platforms, have a lot of money pumped into them (you cannot tell me that Chappell grew her wardrobe like that overnight without a lot of help) and then they’re basically hung out to dry in the court of public opinion because no one provides them the type of protection and support that they should have when your fame literally explodes. So it’s the perfect storm of parasocial fans, genuine overexposure, and backlash that makes me feel we’re going to lose Chappell in some way and in six months time there’ll be another Midwest Drag Queen Princess slid in to take her place.

I heard Hot To Go in a Target commercial, and I was reminded of hearing Good As Hell in basically every commercial on TV three months before the Lizzo tour allegations came out. If I had a nickel, etc etc.

lots of people just want to see her downfall because they don’t like her for petty reasons and they won’t admit that’s the truth of it because it’s very immature and embarrassing for them
