It’s something that’s not particularly uncommon for actors and musicians for one reason or another. Sometimes they just don’t think their given name will stand out, or is difficult for people to spell or pronounce, or they just simply don’t want to be confused with someone else. (For example, David Jones didn’t want to be confused with Davy Jones, so he went with the stage name of David Bowie.)

And then there’s Joni Mitchell. She was born “Roberta Joan Anderson”, so Joni’s actually a variation on her middle name. Mitchell, OTOH, is because she changed her last name when she got married… but got divorced early in her career, and couldn’t change her last name again because she’d just gotten famous under it.

someone stop me I got sucked into hate reading a hater’s incessantly negative opinions about DW… the kind of person who would only be happy if the show was exactly what they wanted it to be with no room for an open mind. I’ve gotta get out of there it’s making me feel bad :persevere:

STOP! That’s a circle of hell I was getting way too deep into before TARDIS Guide threw me a lifeline and I was saved. Remember that they don’t like Doctor Who - they only like the imaginary version in their head which is created from half remembered emotions from when they were 11 years old - and move on.

I closed the tab, I’m safe again! It’s so deeply depressing to see people go on and on and on about why this and that and the other with absolutely no ‘but I really loved this!’ posts in the middle. And they had the gall to call The Eleventh Hour ‘the worst post regeneration story since The Twin Dilemma’ :smiling_face_with_tear:

Out of morbid curiosity where was this Eleventh Hour hater hanging out?

Tumblr. Fortunately, there are a lot of good fans over there who you can have productive conversations with and I absolutely have pruned my feed to be exactly what I want to see, but occassionally the ghost of a divisive post floats by me and the morbid curiosity takes over. A bad habit, alas

I’ve tried tumblr and I’m obviously too old for that shit.

The Twin Dilemma’s overhated, honestly.

I realised recently that I actually find it harder to focus on audio stories if im not also doing something else (mainly something with my hands that doesnt require a lot of thinking) while listening to it, Which seems counterintuitive.

when I try to focus only on the story my mind wanders way more. I think part of it is that I start focussing too much on visualising individual things perfectly, and I stop focusing on what’s actually happening and then I loss track of the story.

Yup. It’s a common problem we all run into sooner or later. A lot of us here prefer to listen to audios commuting or doing repetitive work, like laundry. My theory is that you need to have a certain amount of things on your mind to stay focused and audio drama only is not enough. Like, you are only using your audio pathway, so your attention get caught by what you are seeing and feeling.

I have this exact same problem and created this thread to get some ideas what I could do while listening!

I usually listen when I go for a walk, which gives you lots of things to look at, or when I’m doing chores around the house. If I’m in bed I’ll play a game on my phone but I don’t tend to concentrate enough on the audio then.

“Two of Sweden’s most famous authors”

Of Sweden’s?

OF SWEDEN’S?!?!?!?

Astrid Lindgren, sure, but Tove Jansson was Finnish, born and bred! A Swedish-speaking Finn, but still!

I’m offended by this blatant cultural appropriation! /j

I also agree with @deltaandthebannermen to an extent - TOO MUCH SWEDEN!

I’m forever bothered by the fact English call 红茶(literally red tea) black tea and 黑茶(black tea) dark tea. It’s brought up in a conversation over tea and my younger friend, who’s in high school and is not good at English, is utterly baffled by this factoid.

People in the UK, why? I ask you all, why? I mean, I know why it happened in history. But why?

NEVER!!!

Admit it you want to be Swedish too.

I’ve never heard anyone say ‘dark tea’ in my life!

NEVER!!!

There’s an old Finnish saying from WWII, commonly used among our soldiers, which roughly translates as “We are not Swedish, and we will never be Russian!”

(Okay then, I genuinely love Sweden and I sort of kinda maybe perhaps would want to be Swedish, but only beacause you’re better at Eurovision, pop music, cinema, TV, books and (sometimes) hockey…)

Can I be Swedish?

This is your Prime Minister, right?
