Yes and no

Tories are our right wing, but they at least pretend to be the ‘respectable’ right wing. We don’t really have any anti-abortion sentiment here (at least not taken seriously), and while some definitely do, the tories who do hate LGB people are a lot quieter about it… now transphobia on the other hand, well, there’s a reason we’re called ‘TERF Island’

From what I’ve seen, the tories are probably closer to the democrats than republicans, or at least they were a few years ago, they’re slowly moving over, but they’ve not quite gotten there yet

The Tories are also “anti-woke”, it’s their latest culture war. They are also hugely against immigrants, even legal ones fleeing from war, and there are no safe routes to the UK (even though we legally have to provide them) so you see a lot about refugees coming to us on boats, thats one of their favourite subjects.

And yes extremely anti-trans.

A big part of the hate of new Doctor Who is from the anti-woke brigade, fuelled by our newspapers which all lean to the right.

I’m part of, what a senior Tory party politician called, the “Guardian-reading, tofu-eating wokerati”.

(The Guardian is a left-leaning newspaper, although their record on reporting on trans people is not good, and yes I eat tofu, I’m vegan :seedling:)

I’m very political but try not to speak about it as it riles people up!

Yeah, the Republicans hate illegal immigrants, too. They tend to go on about ones from Mexico and never Canada, for some reason, though both countries are on our borders.

Anti-woke and Republican do tend to go hand in hand, too.

(While I’m not vegan, I’m closer than some. I’m an ovo-lacto vegetarian.)

Same on talking about politics. Just doing it a little more in this thread because these forums honestly seem a little safer then most on that front. I’ve also been finding myself more and more extreme left, but it’s American extreme left, which involves wanting things that a lot of Europe already has. I’d be far less extreme if I was over there…

I think that a good thing about a multi-party system is that you can vote for a party that is both left and right but not extreme. We also have our crazy right-wing and former neo-nazi party in Sverigedemokraterna but they have to negotiate with our more traditional right-wing parties. Do this work. Yes and no I think that our other right-wing parties have tried to copy the crazy ones instead of isolating them but at least they can not just win and control everything. I vote social democrat or Green.

It worries me how several European countries are currently voting more right-wing parties and populist movements into positions of power. This is becoming a trend everywhere.

Our populist far-right party, the True Finns, was a minor party until the Parliamentary elections in 2011, when they won the election in a landslide and became the third-largest party in Finland, changing our political landscape forever (they’ve been in the top 4 ever since, joining our traditional three major parties: the Social Democrats; the National Coalition, our moderate right-wing party; and the Centre Party, traditionally popular among farmers and people living in the countryside, and there is a lot of countryside in Finland). They’re similar to Sverigedemokraterna but not quite as extreme. And now they’re one of the four parties in our government, with their leader serving as our Minister of Finance. It’s been a year since the election, and the party has already caused several scandals. The police recently arrested one of the True Finns MPs, a police officer by profession, for allegedly threatening a couple of guys outside a nightclub with a handgun after an argument and firing a warning shot.

As a member of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland, I typically support the smaller Swedish People’s Party, a social-liberal party that aligns with my views. They tirelessly strive to uphold our bilingual society and the rights of the Swedish-speaking community, which other parties are gradually diminishing. This is why they joined our government, despite disagreeing with many of its central policies, such as those on immigration, environmental issues, and tax increases.

I’m a sociologist by education, and I’ve been politically active most of my adult life. I’ve been following national and international politics for a few years, so this is a passionate subject for me.

Whenever I think of our politics as wild (and it is much wilder now than six or seven years ago, when everyone seemed to be able to get along no matter what), I always remind myself that it is much worse in the UK and the US, especially. Given his previous term’s various issues, I’m already concerned about the potential consequences of Trump’s re-election in November, and I fear that his next term could spell disaster for both the US and the rest of the world.

We live in a crazy world, but I hope we get through these unstable times together and don’t take all the wrong turns, because every mistake might play into the hands of some less-benevolent powers out there. Let’s be friends and enjoy the good things in life together!

Watching clips of Catherine Tate on 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown makes you realise how good an actor she is.
To misquote Bloodaxe: “Her’s is not a towering intellect” :grimacing: But she is so loveable

Happy Grundlovsdag to you then! I hope you have a great day!

(And you Danes clearly don’t know when to celebrate Father’s Day! It’s not until November, you fools :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

No, we’ve got it figured out, everyone have the day off on Grundlovsdag - us dads can really get celebrated

Okay, that’s actually pretty clever! Because we celebrate Father’s Day on the second Sunday of November, so it’s never an extra day off!

That’s it, we’re moving to Denmark!

Does being a cat father count?
