Reading the novelisation got me generally thinking more about The Day of The Doctor and the stories that surround it, I remember the leadup to it back in 2013, all the hype around it, and everything that came out then was just so exciting.
What are you guys’ memories of when it came out, and what of the related stories have you watched/read?
I still remember when Night dropped. I got wind of it at work and watched it on my laptop during lunchtime. I was so excited but literally no one there would understand why.
I also remember how excited I was to get tickets to the 50th convention - again at work- and trying to explain my excitement to my colleagues.
I remember rewatching the trailer a million times, doing loads of speculation about the John Hurt Doctor, going crazy seeing the Eighth Doctor on my TV, and then going to see it in the cinema in 3D and being blown away.
It was an absolutely incredible 50th celebration and I loved it!
I wasn’t involved in expanded media at the time, but I’ve read the novelisation (need to re-read, I remember it was really good), and I do plan to tackle all the Big Finish stuff and the novellas when I get a chance!
Personally, having just read the novelisation and loving it, that’s fresh on my mind, an easy 10/10 for me
Also everyone always (deservedly) gives Night of the Doctor a lot of credit, but I rarely hear any love for The Last Day which I think is a fantastic view of the last days of the time war from the ground and is thoroughly underrated
Lastly I had no idea The Morning Before the Day of the Doctor existed given it’s tucked away in a children’s short story collection, and I definitely havent’ read it, but putting here wondering if anyone else has?
Haven’t read anything in this thread yet to avoid spoilers (though i’ve already had the few unavoidable ones) but if my watch through keeps at the ongoing pace, i’m watching DotD tomorrow!
Well, to be fair, that collection came out a week or two ago, so no wonder you haven’t heard of it! I’m slowly working my way through the collection, but I haven’t this one yet (it’s the last one).
Anyway, I remember the 23rd of November 2013 as if it was yesterday. This was very early in my career as a Whovian and I was super excited to sit down and watch the simulcast on Finnish TV together with millions of others. I spent the entire day dressed in my fanfic Doctor’s outfit (the 23rd Doctor, btw) and made Dalek cupcakes and non-alcoholic sonic screwdriver drinks for the broadcast (my entire family was watching!). And I was wearing a paper fez!
I wasn’t into doctor who when it aired but I always loved the episode. It’s a great tribute to the show. 11th and 10th chemistry together is great. Loved the War Doctor. I’ve read the novelization a bunch of times and it’s good. It does get confusing with the multiple POV’s at times but it’s not a huge inconvenience. The flashback chapters and the ‘intermission’ ones are a good read.
I remember my expectations were pretty low. I felt (and still do) that the series would do big “event” episodes that were very full of their own importance, and often began with some really catchy hook that the actual episode failed to look up to.
I think if I had gone into it with higher expectations, I would still have been blown away. But starting with low expectations, I was absolutely floored. What it did in and around the Time War and the Doctor’s involvement was nothing short of brilliant.
Night of the Doctor added a little more magic, and should be considered part of it IMO.
Like everyone else, I was tremendously excited over Night as that was just when I was starting to get into the audios, so it was a very thrilling time to be alive. As for Day… I understand why some people are underwhelmed or annoyed by it, but I love it. It is such a thrill for me every time - I love War and think John Hurt is brilliant, it was great to have Tennant back that time, the Matt Smith era means so so much to me in general, so I do have very rose-tinted glasses.
I do remember being a little disappointed that only Rose was returning and none of the classic companions or Doctors, but then the Curator happened, and I was watching with friends and we all lost it collectively.
And of course, we got the MASTERPIECE that is Five-ish Doctors, which is the best love letter to the show that could ever have been written
Oh god, the Five-ish Doctors! Probably the funniest thing to ever be part of the Whoniverse. I howled with laughter throughout that whole thing. Whatever my feelings on Tom being favoured in the actual story, the fact their exclusion meant we got that project means the old adage of every cloud has a silver lining is so, so true.
Oh and we got An Adventure in Space and Time which was marvellous.
