See, I thought S3 of Picard was by far the worst one. It really is the worst offender in terms of nostalgia over plot, and when I already don’t care about half the characters from TNG it makes it really hard to get through. The reveal of The Borg, again, as the main villain really felt like the writers just completely forgot about the ending of the previous season. It was as if nothing that had happened before actually happened.
I have watched s2 via other means. Agree that having some focus in the present with the Quantum Leap team added a real interesting element.
For me the problem with the first 2 seasons of Picard is that it wasn’t about Picard. It was about Patrick Stewart. It all felt like an extended ego trip/therapy session for him.
I will agree that the reveal of the big bad was a let down as they’ve been done to death in Trek but I thoroughyl enjoyed Season 2, the time travel shenanigans and thought all the characters were great. I was actually disappointed that Season 3 shunted most of them out of the picture to bring back the TNG crew.
Well, anyway, I think you’re all wrong.
I’m big into my comics, so Marvel and especially DC are the big ones there for me
Like other people, I actively avoid anything even remotely related to Harry Potter nowdays, being trans myself and having a lot of trans friends
Well, even if I weren’t and didn’t have them I think I’d still avoid Harry Potter, but of basic respect towards trans people, but especially because I am
The other big franchise I love is Planet of the Apes, the original films were on tv a lot when I was young. As a kid the central idea of talking apes in an upside down society with humans like animals was so fascinating & cool to me. Then we had a tv show & animated version before we got the reboots, Tim Burton’s not that good one & the Andy Serkis/Caesar trilogy. The new one, Kingdom, was fine. I am just so into the idea I’ll probably watch further sequels. Plus there were lots of strange comic book spin-offs. Even one that mashed up the world of Planet of the Apes with the world of Alien Nation (the cop buddy movie about alien refugees which also had its own tv show).
The Primate Directive was a fun comic book with the TOS Star Trek team meeting Cornelius, Zira etc. Wonderful artwork by Rachael Stott.
Mark Kermode conveys a lot of what I feel about the original Apes movies.
I sort of rotate between fandoms, I never quite know what my brain will latch onto. Most of those only last a month or maybe three though, until I feel like I’ve come out of my haze and can think clearly again.
Things that have come back or stayed for longer include Star wars (very much still love this and also something to connect with my dad and brother about) and the MCU, though I’m not sure if that one will come back because I’ve been to disappointed by some of the newer stuff, just too many of my favourite characters died.
I also adore Lord of the Rings, but this felt less intense to me.
I used to love Harry Potter when I was like ten to twelve and it majorly improved my English skills with my reading those books in English far before having the skills but just being to stubborn to give up. The way jkr acts now has majorly soured all about it for me.
I’m honestly surprised just how deeply I’ve fallen in love with doctor who, I’m eight months in and still deeply obsessed, but in a way that feels a bit more sane than that initial obsession. I hope it stays with me for a long time
Did someone already mention Godzilla?
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+ is rather good.
I’ve been meaning to re-watch the original movie for quite a while now and have heard only good things about Godzilla Minus One
Oh gosh other franchises? You ask me, a doctor who fan what other franchises I like??!?!?! But anyway I must say besides Doctor Who and I suppose the beatles (but that’s not really a franchise) there are not many Franchises I am much into, more broadly into Films or Animation. Of course going by the ones we have as a Choice: I really adore Star Trek, I must admit I haven’t delved TOO MUCH into it, I’d love TNG, DS9, Voyager and the first 10 Movies. I used to really like Star Wars, but admittedly the Internet Discourse kinda made me lose my Interest, I mean I will probably watch a new Movie if one comes out, but not in a rush to get into one of the new Shows. Marvel is a mixed bag, I admit after having SO MANY Shows and Flicks as of late, I only really try to watch the ones that interest me. Meanwhile, DC is much more for my liking, honestly probably the closet where I delve a bit more, although it’s a shame how the Movies tend to be so Batman focused (enjoy Batman but wish the other Characters would get a spotlight besides in the Comics). And Disney/Pixar is one that can go either way for me, ADORE some of their Movies and some not so much (anybody who reads it: Please watch Fox and the Hound).
So yeah enough of my rambling, very excited what will be a possible project for the distant future!
Edit: PS: As @deltaandthebannermen & @Goibniu mentioned Jim Henson/Muppets and Godzilla are also two big ones that are just lovely!
Based on that list I chose:
Pratchett Terry Pratchett/Discoworld holds a special place in my heart. I have read everything he has writen and released to the public, except for a series of 5 books that I don’t want to read as I wouldn’t have anything left.
Star Wars I’m a big Star Wars fan, but like the MCU, I’m ‘Star-Wars’d-out’. There has been too much mediocre stuff released, to the point that my interest has gone to pretty much zero. I want to watch the 2nd season of Andor, and hopefully the new Rey film will be good, but I’m not holding out hope. (I’m a huge Rey fan BTW)
Star Trek This is my youth. Watching TNG at 6pm on BBC2 after school. I think I’ve moved on from this franchise now, but I do check in every couple of years to see what is going on.
Star Wars: Andor was the only show I’ve liked since Disney got the property
Star Trek: I mostly watch older stuff
Potter: I only finished for the first time a couple of months ago, and I can see why it’s considered the tentpole urban fantasy series
DC and Marvel: still mostly read older stuff; I don’t like the MCU as much as other people
As Harry Potter was mentioned, has anyone read Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer?
I always thought of it as a more interesting urban fantasy series and loved the first one so much that I even bought the comic version in addition to the book.
However, it seems it never really gained traction, and the movie they made a while back didn’t capture the essence of the books.
I have not read it but now I want to
Read the first book once, didn’t really click for me. Still might give it another chance sometime.
Probably worth bringing up this series of Neil Gaiman’s…
I read the Artemis Fowl books growing up. Fun books by Eoin Colfer, especially the first for. The movie, however, was horrendous!
LOVED those books, but have to admit they really declined in quality after no. 5 and the movie (and ngl the graphic novel you posted) are Atrocious
Only seen the film and undoubtedly one of the worst movies I have seen in my life. So bad it’s funny.
Massive Trekkie, and tbh trying to stave off another dive into Trek Hyperfixation Hell™ after watching (and rewatching) Prodigy s2 (if you have Netflix please give it a go, it’s a great intro to Trek and amazing show in general, plus more views means a s3 is more likely). Got into it around 2011 bc a local channel was doing TNG (and then Voyager and then DS9) reruns that my mum would watch and I eventually sat down and joined her (and subsequently fell far deeper into the franchise than she ever did, as I do with most media lol).
Have watched all of TNG, Voyager and all 13 films (albeit quite a while ago), 6/7 seasons of DS9, 1.5ish/4 seasons of ENT, various eps of TOS, 3/5 seasons of DIS, 1/3 for PIC, and keeping up to date with Lower Decks and Prodigy. Haven’t managed to read many of the expanded universe books/comics unfortunately.
TNG, Prodigy and Lower Decks are tied for favourite honestly, they all have aspects that I love above other Treks. DS9 and Voyager are also pretty up there, and have some of my favourite individual episodes, but overall don’t hit the mark as much as my top 3. Enterprise was a lot better than I expected, (and I’m a full Faith of the Heart convert) but tbf those expectations were Very Low. DIS was painful to get through the first two seasons but was very glad when they left the TOS era nostalgia fest for the distant future, and will eventually catch up on s4-5 one day. Picard had a lot of potential but as s1 dragged on it just got worse and worse, and I’ve heard that s2-3 aren’t much better so idk if i’ll ever get around to watching them.
As for Star Wars, similarly to others in the thread, I’ve been burnt out of SW thanks to Disney, I absolutely Loathed TLJ and the absolute mess it forced RoS to be since Johnson basically trashed everything being set up in TFA and wrote them into a corner (tho why tf was a multi-billion dollar film trilogy NOT planned out in the first place I will never know).
Big Prequels fan and loved the Clone Wars and Rebels shows (tho the latter definitely peaked with s2 and went downhill from there). Have watched one season of The Mandalorian (loved it but haven’t caught up since), TBOBF (Could Have Been Great, but also decided to have a random Mando ep in the middle?? WTF) and the Ahsoka show (looks pretty but totally lacks substance. Clearly the result of Lucasfilm forcing Filoni to smash together the two Rebels sequels he had planned into one hot mess). Have heard great things about Andor but haven’t been in enough of a Star Wars Mood™ to watch it but will some day.
Have read quite a bit more of the expanded universe for Wars compared to Trek, mainly Prequel and pre-Prequel era books and comics, but still Very Little compared to Who.
I loved The Books of Magic in the beginning, but I feel the stories about Timothy Hunter got really bad later on.
