I’m just curious, apart from Doctor Who, which of these other franchises do you enjoy, and do you delve into the expanded universe of any of them as well?
(Yes this is for something potentially in the distant future…)
Star Wars
Star Trek
Marvel
DC
Disney/Pixar
Harry Potter
Discworld / Pratchett

Also if there are any others you can think of (must have a large catalogue of stories, like Doctor Who), please mention below
It used to be Star Wars and Marvel but I have lost all interest in them due to the low quality of some of the later releases. I heard that Star Wars has some good shows now but I don’t care anymore…
As far as Star Trek extended universe, I’ve read several Star Trek novels in the past. Didn’t mark myself as being into Star Wars due to not being as big on it as a lot of people, but I’ve created characters for multiple Star Wars RPGs.
Read plenty of Harry Potter fanfiction before I found out about JK Rowling’s beliefs.
I’ve played the Discworld adventure game.
I’m counting the Owl House, Gravity Falls, Ducktales, and quite a number of things, really, under Disney…
Red Dwarf has a lot of seasons, and multiple books.
And we have talked about Babylon 5, Blake 7, Firefly, and Farscape in the past. Oz has a ridiculous number of books, actually. I’ll also say My Little Pony’s got a large catalogue of episodes and multiple movies over several reboots and spinoffs.
Star Trek feels like it is closest to Doctor Who in scope. I sometimes think that I want to get into it but then I get overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Maybe a Trek.guide would help.
For others. Pokemon could be an alternative as well. A lot of different mangas, animes, and games.
From the franchises mentioned:
DC, Marvel, Star Trek, Star Wars.
Both Star Trek and Star Wars lost me a little bit in the last few years. Notably, Star Wars with “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker,” and Star Trek with “Discovery.” I guess in both cases, the inner logic (or from my point of view, lack of inner logic) of the stories just did not work for me.
But both franchises also had stuff I enjoyed. “Strange New Worlds” in the case of Star Trek (and I’m planning to watch “Prodigy” after all the good things I heard about it here and in other corners of the internet).
“Mandalorian”, “Andor”, “Ahsoka” and some of their animated stuff in the case of Star Wars (and nah, “The Acolyte” lost me in the first two episodes. Maybe I’ll give it another try if they make a season 2).
I am absolutely an “expanded universe” guy. I just love to explore the vast universes behind what’s shown on TV. I read, I guess, all the Star Wars expanded universe books before they lost their status as canon. The original Thrawn Trilogy was just brilliant, among other things, for opening the curtain to a much bigger universe than the movies had shown.
Other Franchises: Wahrhammer 40k
Never played the game and still have to paint my first miniature. Got sucked in by the books by Dan Abnett. Enjoyed some of the video games. And the animated stuff on Warhammer+ TV (I think that’s the name, don’t quote me on that ) is really good.
I can definitely think of multiple entry points for Star Trek. I mean, TOS was the original series, and a lot of people came in around TNG, and, of course, SNW is a prequel to TOS.
These days I’m kinda feeling like Prodigy would be a good entry point, though, despite having cameos from other series and being sort of “what happened after Voyager”. It’s a good show, and it was somewhat aimed at kids, which means it was intended to be people’s first Star Trek series, and explains some things the other shows tend to take for granted.
Only other thing I’m like REALLY big in is Disney, but only the comics side of things (English-only speaking people wouldn’t understand). It’s kinda the same as DW in the sense that it has a long history and that there is a completely ridiculous amount of it. Also because there is so much, both have the possibility to tap into a lot of different genres.
(Also, this made me think again of that one Mickey Mouse comic that was basically an adaptation of The Girl in the Fireplace but better)
There is another Star Trek tracker. I don’t know how good it is or if people use it. But thought that it could be worth mentioning. Don’t think that it covers EU stuff.
(Don’t worry, not going to shift focus away from TARDIS Guide for the foreseeable, and it will always be my favourite - I just had a realisation that I can bottle up what I’ve built and use it for other things).
These things do really help me with getting sucked into a franchise. I know for sure I wouldn’t have listened to so many audios if it wasn’t for this site!
(And for the Disney comics, I wouldn’t have gotten so obsessed if it wasn’t for Inducks. Kind of the same thing as TG, except more nerdy data than tracking stories)
I read a lot of Donald Duck comics when I was little. Kalle Anka Co (Donald Duck and Company) is the biggest comic in Sweden with a new issue every Friday.
Yup. Many countries in Europe have this. I was shocked learning that in English speaking regions the existence of these comics was completely unknown. Even more so because here in NL we’re so obsessed with that Duck, that at some point, 1/17 of the entire country was estimated to weekly read it.
While Cage is worth a watch, it’s the original pilot which was scrapped, so, for example, it has Pike instead of Kirk, and some inconsistencies with the rest of the series, though SNW was drawing from it with their own version of Pike.
So Man Trap would probably be the better starting place of the two. Mind you, I do like Cage…
