I’d say those four are my favorites with The Fires of Vulcan and The Stones of Venice being runners up.

Out of all of these, the only one I didn’t like was Loups-Garoux.

My favourites according to stats, 4/5, are:

  • The Apocalypse Element
  • The Holy Terror
  • Sword of Orion
  • Minuet in Hell

1-10, I could take them or leave them. 11-20 though, this is when it gets interesting! I love Shadow of the Scourge and I don’t care how silly it is. And of course, this run of stories gives us Romana <3

Shadow of the Scourge is a good one.

And Romana is great in The Apocalypse Element.

I have not listened to all of these stories.

My favourite is still The Holy Terror and it would take a lot to usurp it.

I’m still in the mood for ranking something!

  1. The Stones of Venice
  2. The Holy Terror
  3. Loups-Garoux (it’ll be interesting talking about this in the Audio Club, from what I’ve read the reaction has been quite cool!)
  4. The Fires of Vulcan
  5. The Shadow of the Scourge
  6. The Apocalypse Element
  7. Storm Warning
  8. The Mutant Phase
  9. Minuet in Hell (halfway through a relisten right now! It’s an experience of an audio…)
  10. Sword of Orion

I’m really fond of this little nest of stories. The first McGann season feels so homely to me as it was my introduction to 8.

No contest - The Fires of Vulcan, The Holy Terror and Storm Warning. None of the others even come close!

The Holy Terror is the uncontested winner here, a sheer masterpiece, and The Fires of Vulcan is a strong pure historical. Shadow of the Scourge is another superb audio, and Storm Warning is a brilliant beginning for Eight’s BF adventures.

It’s a very strong run. I voted for:

The Fires of Vulcan: I genuinely preferred this to “The Fires of Pompeii”.
The Shadow of the Scourge: I delighted in the Benny/Ace pairing, loved the setting and the alien menace.
The Holy Terror: Oh my! One of the “Whoiest” of all Who! Ground breaking in so many ways. Genuinely frightening. Utterly tragic. Pretty much perfection for me!
The Mutant Phase: Adored the “Dalek Invasion of Earth” call-backs. Loved the mutant creatures. Just a crazy-fun Dalek adventure that was a little different. A very strong outing for the 5th Doctor.
Storm Warning: The 8th Doctor’s triumphant first appearance in audio. McGann’s first opportunity to really get to do a proper Doctor Who story. Loved the setting. Loved the aliens. Loved the 8th Doctor and loved Charley. Great stuff!
Sword of Orion: Atmospheric sci fi cyber shenanigans.

I actually think I prefer Storm Warning over Holy Terror.

Bringing this back up to the top of the list. With people asking about essential (or just plain good) Main Range releases, here’s a very boiled down snapshot of our thoughts on the second ten. Each story featured in the poll has its own Audio Club thread if you want to see our more detailed thoughts on it.

It looks like the top three are: The Holy Terror (MR #14), Storm Warning (MR #16) and The Apocalypse Element (MR #11).

Ranking this lot, I’m left with
1.The Holy Terror
2.Storm Warning
3.The Shadow of the Scourge
4.The Fires of Vulcan
5.The Apocalypse Element
6.Sword of Orion
7.The Mutant Phase
8.The Stones of Venice
9.Loups-Garoux
10.Minuet in Hell

The Holy Terror is one of Big Finish’s best releases, entirely deserving of it’s reputation, whereas Minuet in Hell is another that deserves it’s reputation, but for all the wrong reasons.
Loups-Garoux was rather boring to me unfortunately, it just didn’t quite click.
