Favourite Full-Cast Audio for Each Doctor?

Naturally with Thirteen’s first Big Finish one still to come (although feel free to include Redacted if you like) and Fourteen and Fifteen not having had any yet, they can sit this out but I was idly wondering what my favourite full cast audio story for each Doctor would be and needed to jot them down.

Then thought where better to jot them down than here? Interested to see other people’s.

(Merge this into an existing topic if needed, I did have a cursory glance and couldn’t see one, sorry if I missed it).

Fugitive Doctor
Coda

She’s only had 3 of her own and I was tempted to put The Legend of Baba Yaga, my favourite of those 3, but at the last minute plumped for this one. It’s more fun than any of her other appearances I think. That isn’t to say I don’t like her other appearances, I do. Even love some of them but I wouldn’t call any of them fun. This one is, and it suits her.

First Doctor
The Last of the Romanovs

While I’m one of those who likes Stephen Noonan as the First Doctor, Bradley’s range was a lot more consistent in story terms. This one was my personal favourite because I love me a First Doctor historical and am fascinated by the story of the Romanovs.

Second Doctor
Operation Werewolf

The current range of Season 6B with older Jamie and older Zoe is leaving me cold but this Lost Story with them as they were on TV takes the crown as best Second Doctor full-cast audio for me.

Third Doctor
Intelligence for War

I’ve changed about. I might have said The Annihilators an hour ago or an hour from now but I think it’s this one right now. Daisy Ashford is so good as Liz and fleshing out Season 7 with more stories has proven quite fruitful, with the exception of the rare miss in Brain Drain. I’d say this one is the strongest of them so far.

Fourth Doctor
Night of the Vashta Nerada

I’ve heard some of his own range but not loads so I’m sure there are some classics within but I think my favourite of his that I’ve heard is from Classic Doctors New Monsters. It’s paced really well and even though it does set up the Eighth Doctor sequel, it stands on its own really well too.

Fifth Doctor
The Kingmaker

Spare Parts is very good but (say it quietly) I’ve never found it quite as good as its reputation. Hooklight is a recent contender but I think I have to give it to The Kingmaker. Some audios, the first time I heard them, just stayed with me and this is one of them. Love it.

Sixth Doctor
The Holy Terror

This is another. Just an utterly fantastic listening experience.

Seventh Doctor
Master

Gives Sylvester stuff to do he had never been given before and hasn’t been given since. Beevers is astonishing and I’d say this might well be in my top 5 stories of all Doctor Who.

Eighth Doctor
The Chimes of Midnight

It might be cliche but I can’t put anything else. McGann has a large number of classics among his Big Finish output but deep down I think this is still the best. Honourable mentions to Neverland, Scherzo, A Life in the Day, The Red Lady and Ship in a Bottle though.

War Doctor
He Who Fights with Monsters

Ok, this is a boxset but it’s a 3-part story for me, as some of the War Doctor’s sets are. This remains my favourite War Doctor story of all, nonchalantly knocking The Neverwhen off the top spot when it was released.

Ninth Doctor
Auld Lang Syne

So great that we have some now. I found Eccleston’s range more consistent than many did and liked a great deal more than I didn’t but this one is definitely my favourite.

Tenth Doctor
Death and the Queen

Almost tempted to cite Dalek Universe as a 9-parter but that’d be cheating. This one is a really unusual story for the Tenth Doctor to be in but it works really well.

Eleventh Doctor
Broken Hearts

To think we almost never got this one at all! A fairly last minute addition to the Valarie series and not only one that was absolutely needed, but also it turned out to be the strongest of the run in my opinion.

Twelfth Doctor
Split Second

Regrettably here, favourite doesn’t necessarily mean ‘great’ and full-cast Twelfth Doctor audios are slim pickings. Dudman does ok actually, better than I’d expected after reading reviews but the stories aren’t stellar. This one works the best for me I think. But I did have to really think. If I can cheat and have Regeneration Impossible, because even though it’s Dudman going solo it’s still presented as if it’s dialogue rather than prose, then I’d have Regeneration Impossible.

So cool that we have options for most Doctors to be honest and super exciting we get to add Jodie very soon!

Ooh love the idea behind the thread! I’ve done a lot of most Doctor excepts for 1, 4 and 12. There’s a few I haven’t heard many of for a while like War, but still! These would be mine I’d say

Fugitive Doctor - The Legend of Baba Yaga
First Doctor - The Living Darkness
Second Doctor - The Queen of Time
Third Doctor - The Quintessence
Fourth Doctor - The Dying Breed
Fifth Doctor - Hooklight 1
Sixth Doctor - The Wormery
Seventh Doctor - Master
Eighth Doctor - Albie’s Angels
War Doctor - The Lady of Obsidian
Ninth Doctor - Girl, Deconstructed
Tenth Doctor - No Place
11th Doctor - Sins of the Flesh
12th Doctor - Regeneration Impossible

Fugitive

None so far, sadly. I haven’t been impressed by her audio output.

Five

Three’s a Crowd. I’m probably the only person who did not like The Kingmaker. Maybe one day I’ll like it, but I couldn’t get through it on first listen. Three’s a Crowd held my attention the entire time. It was fantastic.

Six

I can’t choose a favorite child. But honestly once I find a new “favorite”, I tend to push aside the old ones, so my answer is constantly changing.

I either haven’t listened to the rest of the Doctors or I’ve only heard like one or two stories from them, so it doesn’t make sense to rank.

Sorry for the boring response lol.

I don’t know if I have all of them down, buuuuuut

1 - Great White Hurricane

5 - Hard choice between The Kingmaker and The Gathering

9 - By default, Ravagers, cause that’s the only set I’ve heard
10 - Infamy of the Zaross
11 - All of Time and Space
12 - War Stories
13 - Not yet applicable, but Redacted could count
Fugitive - The Legend of Baba Yaga

oh whoops lol which ones aren’t?

Edit: Oh War Stories definitely isn’t, but I haven’t listened to any other 12 stories. I guess Dead Media would count?

Yeah, War Stories is a short trip.

Regeneration Impossible is also a short trip but technically full cast. I still couldn’t let myself choose it though, even though I do think it’s better than any of the Twelfth Doctor stories which are full cast…

The Night Witches being one of the Early Adventures made me want to change my Second Doctor answer to The Black Hole but while they’re definitely full cast, I’ve always considered them an extension of the companion chronicles. But that’s a me thing, they’re definitely full cast.

The qualifier of full-cast means I had to properly consider my choices for Doctors #1-4! The Companion Chronicles do most of the heavy lifting there for me (and in Four’s case, the Short Trips).

Here’s what I’ve got

  • Fugitive Doctor:
    The Legend of Baba Yaga

I haven’t fallen in love with any Fugitive Doctor audios so far, but I enjoyed this one a lot.

  • First Doctor:
    The Invention of Death

Volume 2 is the only David Bradley boxset I’ve listened to so far. I like a lot of the Early Adventures, but none of them have yet topped this thoughtful, erudite sci-fi piece. (My Companion Chronicles choice would be The Cold Equations).

  • Second Doctor:
    The Jigsaw War

This one’s a two-hander, so it absolutely counts! (From the narrated Companion Chronicles: Second Chances).

  • Third Doctor:
    The Gulf

What an excellent character-driven story that really takes Three to new places. (From the Companion Chronicles: Find and Replace).

  • Fourth Doctor:
    The King of Cats

It counts! Promise!!

(From the Short Trips: A Full Life. Also, all of Nest Cottage…)

  • Fifth Doctor:
    Creatures of Beauty

Everyone knows this one by now! Perfect. Story.

  • Sixth Doctor:
    The Wormery

A boundless, atmospheric, time-twisting cabaret. Beautiful.

  • Seventh Doctor:
    A Death in the Family

This one was probably trickiest. There are three other stories that could just have easily taken this top spot; it’s simply that I’ve listened to this one the most recently.

  • Eighth Doctor:
    The Stones of Venice

I KNOW I know I KNOW but listen. This one just makes me so, so happy.

  • War Doctor:
    Unknown Soldiers

This was SO GOOD and got me 100% on board with the War Doctor!

  • Ninth Doctor:
    Planet of the End

Still my favourite 9DA. Simply fantastic!

  • Tenth Doctor:
    Expiry Dating

A ball!

  • Eleventh Doctor:
    Broken Hearts

But if I could choose the entire Series 7V, I would.

  • Twelfth Doctor:
    Regeneration Impossible

I don’t think it’s a cheat! It’s technically full cast even if it’s just one guy…

The First Doctor Who:
The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50, mainly for being my favourite of the O&F stories that One features in to any significant degree

The Second Doctor Who:
The Union
It’s that or Past Lives, and I prefer The Union

The Third Doctor Who;
The Quintessence
It’s a damn good story, quite frankly

The Fourth Doctor Who:
Morbius, Part Three
It’s pretty good, definitely a step above O&F

The Fifth Doctor Who:
Goth Opera
A strong contender for my favourite non-Scherzo DW audio. Honourable mentions to Spare Parts, The Peterloo Massacre, and Hooklight.

The Sixth Doctor Who:
The Holy Terror
What can I say about it that hasn’t already been said?

The Seventh Doctor Who:
Live 34
Another uncontroversial pick, I expect.
A Genius for War is another strong contender, as a comfort audio for me

The Eighth Doctor Who:
Scherzo
Genuinely the best DW story ever imo

The War Doctor Who:
Coda - The Final Act
It’s better than The Union, which gives it first place

The Ninth Doctor Who:
Swipe Right
I am possibly the only person that Archipelago didn’t work for

The Tenth Doctor Who
Death and the Queen
Not a groundbreaking story by any means, but a fun one, perfectly capturing the tone of season 30

The Eleventh Doctor Who:
Sins of the Flesh
Heartbreaking. Anyone who hasn’t listened to 7V, I implore you to at least pick up this story

The Twelfth Doctor Who:
The Union
Two sweetest words in the English Language: De-fault, De-fault!

The Fugitive Doctor Who:
Coda - The Final Act
I wasn’t impressed by Fast Times, and I haven’t finished her set yet

The Curator:
The Artist at the End of Time
Another comfort audio for me.
Also a default pick

Forgot about him! I second that choice!

I love this one. And it also counts as a Fifth Doctor audio too. Sigh, I really can’t choose favorites.

The Legend of Baba Yaga out here cleaning up lol. I can’t blame anyone, that scene where they find Baba Yaga’s hut with the music swelling is one of the coolest Doctor Who scenes ever.

Dumb question but does Operation Werewolf have anything to do with werewolves or is it just the name of the operation where something else happens?

I’ve only listened to ones with 5-8, going by the free first 50 on Spotify.

Fifth Doctor: My next one with him is The Mutant Phase and it’s also the next audio for me in general. Unfortunately, his stories so far haven’t been all that great, out of these first four they have been rated (out of 10) as 7, 5, 6, and 4. I’ll have to go with Phantasmagoria, Five’s first story (not counting The Sirens of Time). I don’t have much to say really, it’s solid with a few fun characters and an interesting setting but it’s nothing special.

Sixth Doctor: The Holy Terror, it’s practically perfect. A few nitpicky issues but that’s it. It’s funny, witty, creative and then dark, scary and tragic. And it works brilliantly.

Seventh Doctor: It’s between The Fearmonger and The Fires of Vulcan. I love both, but I’ll have to go with The Fearmonger. I just prefer Ace to Mel and while TFoV is great its villains are a little underwhelming. The Fearmonger is a great story with interesting political themes and Seven at his chessmaster-y best.

Eighth Doctor: I started audio dramas with Eight and I will have to revisit them soon because there are a few I can’t recall all too well. Originally I got all the way up to Zagreus but haven’t listened to it yet. Right now I’m doing the first 50 all in order. Obviously though… it’s The Chimes of Midnight. Just really weird, scary, interesting, tragic and all around well-made. I will have to relisten though because I don’t remember everything and there’s always a chance to see if it really is that good or if I might be overrating it. Who knows?

I’ve been told no werewolves, but I haven’t listened

This was not easy at all, and regularly required cheating:

Fugitive: The Legend of Baba Yaga, because of course it is

1: Deathworld. I haven’t listened to a lot of his stuff. If it has to be full cast, that limits my options to basically that or Once and Future

2: The entirety of the James Robert McCrimmon boxset. Already I’m cheating, but I genuinely love all 3 of those stories and cannot choose between them

3: Keleidoscope, because it’s just so fun. It’s a 6-parter, but it flew by. This could easily have been twice as long and I’d’ve had no complaints

4: Either Dark Gallifrey: Morbius (yes, he is absent for most of the story), or The Nest Cottage Chronicles: Hornet’s Nest (yes, that is the entirety of season 1). Another Doctor that I don’t feel the need to seek out audios for, so the stuff I have to pick from is limited and weird

5: Pursuit of the Nightjar is simply glorious. I relistened to it the other day and I still teared up at the end (and that doesn’t happen often)

6: The Queen of Clocks. I’m noticing that a lot of my list is recent stuff, and recency bias is a thing that happens, but I went back through my list of favotites on this site, and I stand by this one. It really is just that good

7: The Architects of History. We’re back to the realm of genuinely tricky decisions. Since A Death in the Family and Protect and Survive get a lot of love on here already, I figured I’d go with something slightly less common

8: There is simply no way I’m just picking 1 story. That’s not going to happen. There’s far too many. For the purposes of this list, I’m picking Phobos, but that’s purely because it’s the lowest rated 8th Doctor audio on the guide that I have marked as a favorite

War: We’re back to recency bias again, but I’m saying Unknown Soldiers. It’s brilliant and beautiful and fun and devestating. (but I can’t not mention Rewind or Berserker or Warbringer, basically anything by Timothy X Atack)

9: Auld Lang Syne is just beautiful. If this is Tim Foley writing 9, I can’t wait for Snare

10: Another Doctor I don’t tend to seek out on audio. I want to say Buying Time/The Wrong Woman, but my real answer is a story that he only makes a cameo apperance in, and saying which one would spoil the extremely satisfying surprise when he does show up

11: The entirety of series 11V. There is no narrowing it down. I have every single story of that run marked as a favorite, and I think my lowest score is a 4/5

12: Literally my only option here is his extremely brief apperance in Once and Future: The Union

The Curator: The Artist at the End of Time. I think this is a Curator story more than it’s a 5th/War Doctor story

The Valeyard: The War Valeyard. Totally not cheating by slipping in another 8th Doctor story in another Doctor’s slot

The Unbound Doctor: Asking for a Friend. Phenomenal, and mildly existentially terrifying

No, it’s fundamentally a pseudo historical. It’s very good tho
