as someone who unfortunately has doctor who canon autism… i hate discussing it with anyone
Nothing is canon, and therefore everything is!
Is the fact that nothing is canon canon?
I mean, the show’s about time travel. Anything on Doctor Who that doesn’t match with what is happening now was on a timeline that’s been altered…
Missy is going to win this but I always felt a slightly disconnect between her and being ‘the Master’. I love Dhawan though.
I really hope BF brings back Simm, I loved him in Masterful and love him in the World Enough two parter; but I don’t like his portrayal much in the 10 era, and especially not in End of Time. I wanna see him play more of the traditional Master like he has since!
I’m not much of a Master fan, and none of the modern Masters have really captured my imagination. I like the quiet scheming of the classic Masters. But I also love the camp ridiculousness of the Goo Snake. Simm is just a bit loud for me, and Dhawan was much the same. I loved Jacobi, but he barely counts on TV and his audios, though I like them, they kind of flow in one ear and out the other
Agree massively. I never quite get the Simm hype (nostaliga most likely) but in Series 10 / Masterful he was portrayed far better.
I’m not a fan of the Master as a TV character, I find them too repetitive, boring, and ineffectual (seriously, have they ever had a plan that actually works out for them?!).
But Missy is hilarious and I love her. The War Master is brilliant on audio because his plans do come to fruition and nobody stops him, so they are deliciously devious.
Simm and Dhawan are just “zany” and not at all funny I don’t think.
I answered Missy, but honestly, if Jacobi had more a body of work on TV he’d probably take it. He’s just so good. I tend to think the Master is only really as good as they play off the Doctor. Delgado is great because he plays off Pertwee fantastically, and I’d say Missy with 12 is the only one that comes close to as good in that regard.
Agree on both points I love both incarnations a lot, for pretty much similar reasons.
Damn we agree on this too! Now how do you feel about… The Movie Master
Callback to a very early thread I posted a year ago!
If we’re calling back to that…
I probably need to rewatch it. I’ve only seen it once. I enjoy him on audio! I dunno, probably a bit camp and silly in the movie…
I… don’t like Eric Roberts’s Master.
I really need to hear his spin-off, I’ve only heard him in his other stuff. Vienna keeps making me not want to listen cause I know nothing about her!
See a big part of why I love The Master as an antagonist is that they’re usually kinda pathetic but don’t realise this. Even Jacobi’s War Master has that side, it just comes out less cause of how often he succeeds
The Master would probably win if they just took a step back and made their plans simpler. But that wouldn’t make entertaining television. And I’m hardly going to criticize a show having the villain’s plans not work when the hero is supposed to win anyway.
I don’t know much about her either but she debuted in this story:
I did vote Jacobi purely because of his performance in the audios, which I love!
Immediately after listening to Future Phantoms, where the Master goes incognito as a friendly old college professor, I was watching the BBC’s Ludwig, where Jacobi plays a friendly old college professor… I was nearly shouting at the screen to warn the characters that their old maths teacher was going to murder them all!
If we go by purely TV Gomez would win, she’s phenomenal, but even in his brief episode on screen Jacobi is electric.
