Everybody's Dead, Dave - A Red Dwarf Thread

A topic to discuss the sci-fi comedy series Red Dwarf.

Some questions to start using off.

Who are your favourite characters?

What are your favourite episodes?

And most importantly, what are your favourite gags/jokes?

I’m rather biased in favor of Cat owing to having had some Red Dwarf books signed in person by Danny John-Jules at a signing at a place I was working at the time…

I always meant to watch this legendary series. I think I watched the first episode years ago and then just never continued.

I really recommend it, I think you should definitely go back and give it another try!

I personally haven’t actually seen all of Red Dwarf.

I saw up to Rimmer kicking the Grim Reaper in the groin, and it saying ā€œThe End?ā€ and then ā€œThe smeg it is!ā€ā€¦

(So, nothing past the end of season 8.)

Just watched Back to Reality.

That was absolutely brilliant!

That was a great episode.

The most uncontroversial opinion about Red Dwarf. S1 - 6 are great. Then it gets pretty crap.

I’ve heard this, and I’m not sure if I should continue once I’ve finished VI…

I adore Red Dwarf and have done since watching it on broadcast on a tiny black and white TV in my bedroom. This was the formative TV of my teenage years and hearing the theme tune (both the opening one and the ā€˜It’s Cold Outside’) take me back to a very nostalgic place. Peak RD for me is Season 1 and Season 6. The Dave stuff is good (and better than the stuff that came in between) but I don’t think it ever quite hit the same heights as it went on. There are some good episodes in there though.

Well personal opinions do differ, the Grant Naylor partnership split up after S6 & Doug Naylor on his own wasn’t as good. I felt it relied too much on old gags & bringing back old characters etc.

Of course, the episode with Tongue Tied in it does have an actor who also appeared on Doctor Who in it…

Tongue Tied was a great song. That’s why Danny John-Jules was at a signing in the first place. He had a bunch of cds of it.

The Grant-less stuff is noticeably less funny and tight (although a few episodes just about pull back some of the old magic - I like Cassandra, for example) but it does get better with Dave (once the weird Back to Earth is out of the way). The series is worse for not having Chris Barrie in it and it improves when he returns but not until they get out of the prison set-up.

The Team-Up we needed!

ā€œCat, your sartorial elegance appears to be matched only by your intellectual shortcomings. For the last time, please do not ask Davros if the Daleks come in orange & fuchsia!ā€

There’s at least one episode in the Dave era which can stand alongside anything in the first six series but, even though I do still like the show, the average most certainly dropped when Grant and Naylor parted ways.

I’m not even going to say Grant was the funny one because his own solo stuff is a bit lacking so it was really just the synchronicity of the two of them.

The Promised Land was also much better than I expected it to be.

Favourite episode? Marooned. Will never have to think about answering that question.

For how many classic british sci-fi series BF have the licenses to, I’m honestly really surprised they’ve not tried to do audios for Red Dwarf

Yep. I had the VHS tapes, DVDs (which are worth getting hold of for the fun commentary tracks) also bought the magazine, sorry Smegazine lol

A couple are quite good, but not seen it for a while.

The dvds remain the best dvds for any BBC show ever I think. The commentaries, the documentaries. Outstanding extra material.

I have all the DVDs (aside from the last couple of Dave seasons I think) but have never got around to the commentaries. I must rectify that. The DVDs are packed with special features too.

The quality definitely does go down with series 7 but the first two episodes of that series, Tikka To Ride and Stoke Me A Clipper are really good, and theres some good moments throughout.
Some of the Dave stuff is good but its not stuck in my memory as much as the older stuff is just because I haven’t rewatched it as much. May put some on later though, Lemons is the one that has stuck in my head the most and was quite funny.
