Everybody's Dead, Dave - A Red Dwarf Thread

As a kid I met Arnold Rimmer’s actor at a con, and he was so nice in person. He ignored the “no pictures” rule and offered me and my dad a pic with him for free. I think considering I was like 10 years old, it might’ve been a rarity to see young fans. Kind of a shame to see his latest blog posts though…

My uncle also met Lister’s actor in a pub and they got on well and apparently discussed his prison life, but this sounds like it was ages ago.

First episode I saw was the nodnoL one.

I didn’t know what you were talking about and now I do and I’m sad…

Beyond Series 6 it becomes a bit of a blur, but there are still some highlights (and in the Dave era too).

The commentaries are a “must listen”. They are as funny as the show, especially for the BBC era stuff.

Red Dwarf is that silly little show, from my youth, that I adore.

I must have started watching from when about Series 4 started airing on BBC 2. I remember going back and watching it all on VHS. A glorious shelf full of series 1-8. Also, as with Doctor Who, UKTV Gold would play an entire series on either Thursday or Friday night. And even though I had them all on VHS, I also had 4 VHS tapes, in LP, with 2 series each recorded. Ads included. I still have them somewhere.

I do remember getting the DVDs as they were coming out. They were released every 6 months and I would go the day of release and get them. As soon as I got home, I watched the series right through. The wonder of 480p. So clean. Then I would watch the documentary disc, and then go back and fall asleep with the commentary tracks.

I still have my DVDs of Series 1-8, Bodysnatcher Collection (the remastered series) and the Smeg Ups DVD. I also got the 1-8 Blu-ray “Just the Shows”. I don’t have anything after that on physical media.

As for the Dave era, I’ve seen Back to Eath and Series 10, but I’ve not been able to watch any more really. Only odd bits here and there. The “modern” stuff doesn’t work that well for me, but I do intent to watch it at some point. Usually I get to the end of Series 8 and give up to live with my nostalgia.

For BBC era, I think all the series have their pluses and minuses.

  • Series 1+2: Low budget but ridiculously well written. Nothing visually spectacular, but you could study them as a “how to” for comedy writing.
  • Series 3+4: A bit of a bigger budget, and a new production designer. There are some really creative stories, but it does feel Ike it’s treading water a little.
  • Series 5+6: I think the most consistently written, with production design to match. Hell, Gunmen won an Emmy.
  • Series 7: I think the loss and Rob Grant is felt immediately, but Doug does manage to hold it together. Chris Barrie is missed, but Chloe Annett is a great addition.
  • Series 8: I adore this series, even if I know it is very flawed. It does fell a bit “flabby”, but It all works for me.

I’ve read all the books too.

  • Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life are very well done adaptations of the show. Really worth seeking out if you haven’t read them.
  • Last Human by Doug Naylor is solid but weird. It feels like Red Dwarf, but isn’t as funny.
  • Backwards by Rob Grant is excellent, but doesn’t really feel like Red Dwarf, just uses some of the elements. It’s definitely an original story.

It is also worth picking up the audiobooks for the first two as they are read by Chris Barrie. He does a great job.

I love red dwarf, I’ve never watched past back to earth though, one day I’ll get around to it.

I’m not sure what my favourite episode would be, I tend to binge watch this show so they blend together a bit. My favourite character has always been Rimmer though :]

Had a go making it for breakfast. Only 1 egg and 2 slices of bread though because we’re rationing on my ship /hj
It’s nice, I could see myself making this again.

Oh, Queeg is great! Actor who plays Queeg did a great job.

I’d have trouble pinning down all time favorite episode, but Holoship was a really good one…
