Honestly!! We are SO lucky we have these extra stories in the EU, specifically BF. The amount of times I’ve read that today has pissed me off tbh :sob:

No franchise I feel like has as much extended media or is quite like Doctor Who in that for the most part everyone TRIES (with exceptions) to treat it as if it’s all one thing. Like with RTD he’ll ignore all the EU material with Sutekh, but then casually throw in the Shalka Doctor as potentially an official incarnation in literally the same season. But I do love that there is just so much and the iceberg of what exists just goes ever deeper. And I’m glad it’s because so many writers have kept rights to their characters so they can still use them elsewhere.

I have often wondered if it’s a rights or money thing, maybe Big Finish gets some profits if something they created is in the show? I dunno. Like others have pointed out the fact the NotD explicitly calls out several of the audio companions (though sadly not the novel ones) was such a delight and I’m really happy so many of them were canonized.

I also know it can be difficult as a writer cause like how do you explain to just show watchers these characters or stories that happened in like comics, books, or audio dramas. If you just have an hour of TV at least with a classic companion the BBC has got you covered with older episodes featuring those companions. You don’t have to go hunting for another company’s work.

Still though, I do wish there was more explicit references in the show. Bring Charley in or something. Nothing would make me happier. And if any show can just explain stuff away in a single bit of dialogue Doctor Who can. But I do love when it happens.

Agree with this 100%
I would love love love a multi-Doctor episode with Eight and any of his EU companions + the current Doctor
(And Benny, of course. Benny needs to be in the show!!)

It’s mad that Benny hasn’t been in the show even just as a cameo or a mention, considering she’s the protagonist of the biggest spinoff of Doctor Who and is arguably one of the characters who’s had the biggest impact on the history of the show – without her BF wouldn’t exist in the form we know it and may not have produced any Doctor Who audiodramas.

Not the same but at least one of the Professors she knew has appeared in the show.

Closest she’s gotten in modern Who outside of audio is apparently she appears in the 12th Doctor novel Big Bang Generation. I really want to read it.

That’s Professor Candy, right? I enjoy citing him as an example, along with Kate Stewart, of how including EU characters in the TV show does no harm to anyone whenever people argue that it would put off casual viewers.

Yep(post must be 12 characters)

I’ve actually read that recently! It was really fun, a great tribute to the expanded universe. It’s a sign of how deep I am in the EU that when I first heard about that book I thought woah, Benny in a New Who story, finally they’re putting my EU favourites in the TV show! before remembering that a novel is not quite so mainstream as New Who…

Yeahhhhh I feel that :smiling_face_with_tear:

I do think there can be some sort of good middle ground between the two. But it’s gonna require a brave enough showrunner.

I think they do, it’s why The Last Good Dalek was allowed to have the Time Controller, cause I think Briggs made it. So if a show writer does it it’s fine. Something along those lines. Who knows? Kate Stewart is from a fan film and she’s in the main show.

I am so happy Kate made it to the main show. Speaking of Downtime I remember reading somewhere that RTD wanted to use clips from that film on Sarah Jane Adventures and the people who made that film said no? Do I understand that correctly? It’s been years.

The whole Kate Stewart thing is allegedly a coincidence. Chris Chibnall claims he didn’t know about her appearances in Downtime and Daemos Rising.

This would be the second time this has happened then. Lol In an interview for Zagreus, I think with the podcast The Sirens of Audio, Gary Russell was asked about the similarities between The Guardians of the Edge in The Power of the Doctor and the afterlife scene in that story with the various Doctors and Russell says he would be surprised to find out Chibnall ever listened to Zagreus. Yet the scenes are waaay too similar. Lol

Well Chibnall did mention in that interview for Vortex that he listened to early BF. Cited Chimes of Midnight as one he had

To be fair, the idea of the other Doctors sitting around in the current Doctor’s head also appears in Timewyrm Revelation and The Scarlet Empress, possibly more; it’s an idea that’s been around in Who for a while.

I loved the line from The Story & the Engine where the Doctor mentions all his past selves are in his head bickering. It was so sweet.

On Saturday I watched “The Night of the Doctor” for the first time (I didn’t even know that it existed until I joined TARDIS Guide in mid-March), and I was super happy to hear 8 mention his audio companions even though I haven’t listened to any of his audios.
