Also, the scenes with Shirley today really reminded me so much in fact of Hebe [1] and her arc, like really reminiscent. I was watching a reactor and they pointed it out too, perhaps RTD took some inspiration?
The same actor plays a companion, Hebe Harrison, on Big Finish and travels with 6/Mel. ↩︎
The Rani’s plan of trapping the Doctor in a reality made of wishes, just to see him reject it, is like something out of the Divergent Universe; an entire society as a lab experiment. Even the previous steps of observing his progress with the Vindicator, given Flood-Rani, give that impression.
The Master causes chaos and kills for the sheer fun of it, but the Rani is more scientific with her methods and (warped) reasoning, and I think that comes through well.
The villains of this story have been dubbed ‘The Unholy Trinity’, but Davies confirmed on Instagram that the Ranis count as one member, and Conrad Clark counts as another, whilst “the third is lying in wait, exactly 160 years away.”
Now, we saw the god baby born 160 years ago.
So is he the third member of the Trinity, rather than Omega?
I think that was supposed to be implied because she was kissing the baby’s head and the baby is the god of wishes? I also thought it wasn’t really explained enough.
Makes sense thematically. The father (Conrad, creating this world), the son (the baby), and the holy ghost (The Rani, who was reintroduced through death)
Thinking about it, it would be quite fitting if Gallifrey and the Time Lords are restored next week due to [shenanigans]… all whilst the Master is trapped in a tooth. He’ll be so mad when he gets out, since he nuked Gallifrey just a few appearances ago.
Maybe, but we didn’t know that until later did we? At the time it was just a baby. Did she kiss the baby before doing her magic? But either way it seems odd a scientist using magic. Then again there is the Arthur C Clarke quote, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”
This is actually the most amusing part of this episode to me - after the Master grooving to Rasputin in The Power of the Doctor and the Rani’s waltz here, does every renegade time lord also have to pick a signature theme song/dance number along with a new name?
Thinking about the other renegades we know, some music I think would be fitting:
Morbius: Thriller by Michael Jackson, or Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees
The Meddling Monk: Welcome to the House of Fun by Madness
Omega: Probably some kind of heavy metal/prog rock - maybe something like Dark Ocean Summoning by The Old Gods of Asgard?
Rassilon: Something very traditional and old fashioned, IDK what
You know what, in an era where they can afford to go photograph Richard E Grant for a 2 second hologram appearance, it’s a shame they didn’t try and get hold of Siobhan Redmond to film a brief appearance of her in a TARDIS or something.
