It’s all good, I understand, that was likely just some of my own sensitivity showing through more than anything else. No harm done.
What Koq Thinks
Mostly enjoyed Lux, but didn’t care much for the third act. Once they hit the fan stuff, it lost me. The Well, still not 100% sold on. I think I’d enjoy it a lot more if you stripped out the Midnight stuff.
I’m enjoying this season more than last year, but I’m generally finding a few things each week which are almost pulling them back from being proper hits for me.
Honestly loved this so much it’s not just a 5 star for me (even if yes the resolution was a bit NuWho standard of “I’m Doctor look how cool I am lol”, though @joerack articulated well why this time felt different), it made me briefly consider knocking The Well back down to my original 4.5* rating. I won’t, but I think at least on immediate thought this is my favourite of season 41 yet. Some of the criticisms - namely the pacing - above are all valid, but honestly when I loved this so much I don’t really care. I love narratives about creation and narratives, and this was so gorgeously written, portrayed, directed, everything that it just worked for me.
This is what I want when I say I was fresh blood in Doctor Who. I want unique voices and unique stories, and this was that. Amazing stuff imo!
Yeah, I would definitely say this season (in fact this whole era) doesn’t really jive with me.
I’m glad everybody else seems to be getting things out of it I simply can’t.
I will keep watching and reviewing them though, if only because of the completionist in my brain will not let me sleep if I don’t.
Completely agree. I was also worried I’d sense RTD interference but it felt restrained/kept to a minimum this week, IMO. I felt Inua Ellams’ voice throughout, one or two moments aside. I wish we’d had more of this since 2023.
Can we now treat Fugitive as another queer incarnation?
This is exactly why big finish feels so different , atleast to me (in a good way)
We didn’t before?
Poor Jo. Wheeled in again for 1 second of screentime. I mean, it’s always lovely to see her, but she deserves a full blown return at some point to showcase what she can do beyond a few quips or cameo/hologram appearances.
Are we going to see her again? Is RTD touching on the story again? They sort of hinted at it here. But the finale already feels busy enough.
Previously (as much as I can remember) the topic of romance hadn’t come up in a FD story but now we knew she was atleast considering marrying Anansi’s daughter.
I always thought she was queer
I’m unfortunately not joining in with the “5 great episodes in a row” crowd because, well, I’ve had problems with this season and really only properly enjoyed The Well. Lux and Lucky Day had strong elements but were ultimately too messy to coalesce into strong episodes and it’s no secret I thought Robot Revolution was poor.
This though? Really, really enjoyed it.
Didn’t quite get it all because the concept was approached actually quite vaguely for it to fully land but, in all honesty, that didn’t actually matter all that much because it being so strange worked in its favour, certainly a way where the same vagueness can stymie other episodes. This created a world, an atmosphere and a vibe which carried it through.
8/10 and probably overtaken The Well as my favourite this season.
Also, super interested in the implications of the Doctor possibly remembering being the Fugitive Doctor and if they do some exploration into that as the dialogue suggested then I’m game but really, that element has existed so long as a question rather than an answer that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just an extra layer of mystery. And I’d be fine with that too.
If the answer to the question is rubbish, I’d rather it stay a question after all.
But great episode and I love it when that happens. Going in on Unleashed now…
Not long until July!
edit: as in S2 of her spin off!
I thought she was going have a flashback scene
Same felt like a missed opportunity tbh
So… that has to be relevant then?? What could it mean
So I watch with subtitles on and he doesn’t say “a black body”, he says “this black body.” So I read it as him meaning that it’s the first time he’s been a black man specifically, and went through the lived experiences of being a black man as opposed to just the lived experiences of being black. Doesn’t answer the question about remembering Fugitive or the fob watch though.
What was the line 15 said? “Stories were leaking out, getting mixed up” or something, near the end?
EVEN HER 2 SECONDS OF SCREENTIME MADE ME GET UP AND WALK AROUND THE HOUSE
Soon I’ll have a whole running marathon if a flashback scene shows up
