Episode Discussion: The Robot Revolution

Definitely!

Even in the EU we still don’t have that many Modern multi-Doctors

I enjoyed this episode quite a bit.
I had a lot of fun watching it, and that is honestly the main thing I am looking for in an episode.

Love your review. Right on point. I find that if I don’t care if it’s good or not, I enjoy it more

It was a decent episode to me, fun to watch at the least. Definitely a step up from Space Babies. That being said, I felt like a lot of the plot elements were underbaked. We’re told instead shown the Doctor’s relationship with Sasha, so her death doesn’t end up having the weight the story insists that it does. I want to see the six months she spent with the Doctor. Additionally, Belinda’s plan to bring the robots to her is nonsensical. Manny’s character is incredibly one-note, antagonistic just for the sake of it because there isn’t a truly valid reason for him to be angry with her. Her decision didn’t make sense with what we learned of her character thus far, so her martyrdom is clumsy since it only really happens since the plot necessitates it. I have other nitpicks, but those were my major ones. On the plus side, there were some neat moments of cinematography, like the time fracture and Belinda going into her time stream. Varada Sethu is great here, really able to carry otherwise awkward bits of writing. And I appreciate Belinda refusing to be a “mystery box” companion, calling out the Doctor. I’m very hopeful to see how her storyline unfolds. Also, I am not immune to a cute little robot, I loved PolishBot.

Just finished watching it. It was fun! Nothing too special, but still an entertaining season opener. Had a very “Smith & Jones” vibe to it that I enjoyed.

Really like Belinda as the new companion. Don’t love her as much as everyone else seems to (probably because I haven’t seen enough of her dynamic with the Doctor yet) but I think she definitely has the potential to be an awesome companion. Excited to see more of her.

(Polish Bot should have been added as a second companion for the season tho. Best character ever 10/10.)

A few nitpicks:

1. Don’t like the idea of yet another Clara-esque special companion with a Big Mystery surrounding them. We just had one last season. I wish they’d just let this one be a normal companion.

2. The cat. :sob:

So true! It’s so important, and I’m happy Doctor Who can help change that. Even if my first thought when seeing the Doctor cry here was also that people are going to complain now.

Remember that they produced S1-2 back-to-back, so they haven’t had the chance to react to feedback between seasons.

It’s not that big of a deal. He told her off-screen.

I just wanted to say that you don’t have to force yourself to keep watching if you don’t enjoy it! It’s completely fine not to vibe with every era or aspect of DW, and it’s strong to be able to confess that the show isn’t for oneself anymore. It’s also not fun to force oneself to keep watching.

I have to say that as much as I love polish bot, I definitely don’t think it should have become a companion. It’s a gimmick that would have gotten stale quick. K9 works because he’s a speaking character. Polish bot is a glorified roomba.

It would be cute to have it pop up polishing the TARDIS floors every now and again thouhh

I was thinking more along the lines of seeing them enter the TARDIS when no ones looking, then every so often having TARDIS scenes where other stuff is going on, and in the background, Polish Bot comes out and starts polishing the floor and says “Polish Polish”…

And maybe an occasional scene where Polish Bot does something more important, like trundle up to the Doctor and dispense a pocket watch.

I watched Unleashed right after the episode for the first time! Getting the full live Doctor Who experience right here, streaming be damned. Even if I streamed it. But I’m going to act like I didn’t, I insist on having the 2008 experience I missed out on.

Most of the opinions I have on the episode have already been said, so I can’t really add much of worth. My one thing maybe would be that I don’t think the Sasha 55 thing was supposed to hit for us, the viewers, and was purely there to be a “showing half the adventure moment”. Like the Doctor keeps namedropping past companions, and there’s all of these offscreen and EU adventures he’s had, and it’s like we’re shown the end of a Season 1b that happened at some point, which we can’t fully grasp, but that we can understand, because it’s such typical companion fare. Sasha 55 is like a TLDR for ‘normal’ Doctor Who companions (for RTD primarily), and how much companions want to travel with the Doc, to then have that contrast with how Belinda’s stance is. Or maybe that was all really obvious and people don’t/do like it anyways and now I look silly.

Welp, it was either that or me yapping about how short modern Who (though I’ve only watched RTD2 lately so maybe it’s just that) episodes feel after not having done them for a while. Which would’ve been a bit semi-relevant only, which we can’t have happen, because we never steer off topic on this forum, right?!
