Episode Discussion: The Legend of Ruby Sunday

It feels like there is a lot of foreshadowing going on this season, and I feel like it all (starting with 13s regeneration) is being manipulated from the outside

I’m reminded of the Big Finish audio Forty-Five 66 meters/73 yards reminds me of the repeated number in it with the number 45 being from the word lords Cordis

Also we still don’t know why the 13 to 14 regeneration was so different, I’m starting to think that maybe the trickster is behind at least part of this

Words chosen with care. Some easy to pick up on. Others less so. Some… only in retrospect.

I know this is probably a controversial opinion (and I’m happy to agree that it’s the slightest and weakest of the stories this season) but I am hugely fond of “Space Babies”. It contains messages dear to my heart, a philosophy that matters and has a number of lovely touches. The first ever “memory of snow” scene was an absolute blinder. Stunning.

And, of course, the foreshadowing.

I still have yet to rewatch space babies… Soon though, I’m rewatching from the end of 13 to now atm, I really hope I like it better on rewatch

I hope so too. Sometimes, knowing what you’re in for helps you to see things that you missed first time around.

That said, I’m not going to pretend like I think it’s an all-time classic. It’s clearly not. Nonetheless, it has heart, and several elements chime with me. Perhaps it’s a personal thing?

oh don’t - I mean I do agree, but I’m trying to satiate myself with the fact that he got mentioned at all and that’s probably all we’re getting. Part of me is still hoping for a Trickster on TV moment, but I am doubtful

In an alternate timeline, the trickster could be behind all of this. Sutekh still being dead, and everything we see might be just an illusion created to sow chaos. Alternatively, Sutekh might truly believe he is the Father of all other gods, a god of gods (which as an Osirian he is not), while in reality, the trickster is manipulating events.
I say in another timeline because, story-wise, for a show on Disney+—a show that has to prove itself to secure funding for additional seasons—this plot would be too complicated for casual viewers and divisive in the fanbase, in my humble opinion.
But I would kinda enjoy that twist, with the real one who waits still waiting for season 2 or 3.

I know that is unlikely, but you just described more or less what I wish would happen

I need to know. Am I the only one who doesn’t think the Trickster is such a good villain?

(Sorry @sircarolyn )

I’d say that, like all Trickster characters in mythology and pop culture, the Trickster possesses enormous storytelling potential. It’s inherent in the nature of being one of the basic archetypes
Currently, at the beginning of my Sarah Jane Adventures rewatch, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I’d agree that this potential was not fully realized, albeit the episodes featuring the Trickster were really good.

I’ve never even watched The Sarah Jane Adventures (sorry @sircarolyn), so I don’t know anything about him/her/them other than what they look like and that they are some sort of … trickster.

Maybe not THIS series, but I think it’s coming. RTD made very clear reference to the Trickster back in “Turn Left” when he was last showrunner. I think it’s only a matter of time.

I’m actually really intrigued to see the Trickster appear at some point. Really REALLY intrigued. This has to happen, right?

I think so.

Oh, you really should.

My son was chatting to me about this just yesterday. He said he had rewatched the whole of SJA whilst at Uni this last year. He hasn’t seen it since first broadcast when he was much younger and was sceptical, worrying that it would be too childish for him now. His opinion (and I completely agree) is this:

Of course it’s written to be child friendly, but it doesn’t duck the big issues and that gives it surprising bite at times. Topics like grief, homelessness, family break-ups, adoption anxiety etc. ALL get dealt with at different times and they don’t talk down to the audience.

Teen characters can so often be annoying but not here. They were written as pretty relatable and normal people (Luke excepted - but he’s a special case). They (and their families) are pleasant company.

The spirit of the show absolutely has its roots in Doctor Who.

The Trickster is an absolute highlight. Each story featuring the Trickster is compelling and often associated with some quite serious issues.

It’s fun. By God, it’s such FUN!

Do yourself a favour, MrColdStream, and enjoy. It’ll put a smile on your face!

Well, thanks for the recommendation and those encouraging words! Your comment already brought a smile to my face! I don’t know why I’ve never gotten around to watching SJA (it’s the only major Whoniverse show I’ve yet to watch). I’ve planned on starting it several times but have always forgotten about it. But I want to watch it at some point because I love Elisabeth Sladen and have heard great things about it!

Now, if only there was a SJA TV club to motivate me…

With me, it’s largely that I watched a few episodes when it was on a streaming service I had, and then it moved. These days, I think it’s on Max, and that’s a scummy enough service that I’m not subscribing to it no matter what is on it…

Yes. Yes you are

Part of it for me is definitely that this guy scared the pants off me as a child

But also I do think it is interesting when they do episodes that warp reality just to f— the characters up. In all the SJA episodes he’s in, he brings up incredibly traumatic memories for Sarah of people who are already dead by making her believe she can have them back, and Turn Left as @realdoctor said is an product of the Trickster, so yes. I think DW proper could do something terrifying with him.

And SJA is brilliant. Yes, it is designed for kids but it doesn’t talk down to them - it’s silly but it doesn’t shy away from hard stuff and personally, I was just the right age for it when it came out so it did resonate hard with me.

So yes, I would be all over an SJA club, and though maybe I don’t think the Trickster should be pulling the strings behind Sutekh, I definitely think he has potential to come back again. I mean 73 Yards is just up his alley in terms of meddling…

Currently at Season 2, Episode 2 , close enough to the beginning to remember the previous episodes. I would participate in an SJA TV Club . It’s more fun to watch with the possibility of discussing each episode with others.

Absolutely agree.

My kids were at that formative age when SJA was broadcast. We’d all sit down to watch it as a family at tea time and it made a real impression on them. I’m hugely nostalgic for it and love it to this day.

The presentation of the Trickster on SJA is moderated for children AND limited by the budgets (both of the time and for a children’s show). I suspect, were they to appear in the main show (and SURELY it’s only a matter of time now), they would undergo quite the make-over (whilst retaining that unsettling core aesthetic) - and be presented in a less ‘pantomime’ manner. “Turn Left” is one of RTD 1s bleakest highlights. A masterpiece, in my book.
