Episode Discussion: The Interstellar Song Contest

I did. I was intrigued about it but my mind went straight to “The Zygons finally found a home planet after the destruction of Zygor” instead of that.

Speaking of the episode. That was different than what I expected. I was shocked at how quickly it went from everyone having fun to sucking everyone out of the space station. The Hellion plot was great and I enjoyed Cora’s backstory. Her song was great. Omg. The 15th Doctor was dark torturing Kid. His initial threats reminded me of 12 in Face the Raven.

Susan was a great cameo. Didn’t expect her at all. Wonder if she’ll come back. Not sure how I feel about the Rani. I unfortunately knew about it since I let my instinct get the best of me but it didn’t include the bigeneration so that part was a surprise. I wish she was one person instead of two since it would’ve been nice to have Mrs. Flood as her own character instead of working with another. That said, I’m still interested to see how it goes since I don’t know anything about the another actor. Also, I need to rewatch that scene since I didn’t hear the other Rani call her Mrs. Flood. At least people won’t be calling every mysterious woman the Rani anymore.

I liked that we got a real Eurovision song in there. Perfect use of Making Your Mind Up.

Maybe the quality of the season has spread. It would be interesting to see if people have gone back and watch the whole thing

Despite it getting the highest number of views, by TG ratings, the only episode ranked below it is The Robot Revolution  which really goes to show that all these numbers mean very little

I will say, I am on season 6 of Classic rn.

I do not know anything about The Rani, I just know them vaguely from all the memes and stuff. So ig I can also see the perspective of non-fan audiences who don’t know much about the show.

But that end reveal fell flat, honestly. It’s far too reliant on you knowing who they are already, instead of introducing them anew.

Edited out spoiler tag =)

It falls flat even if you know who they are.

In other news, that rating above is disheartening.

I could see that reveal potentially working for both. For Classic fans, it’s that the Rani is still around. For newer fans, it’s that another Time Lord, regardless of who specifically, is still around. It fits with how much the episode proper dealt with the Doctor’s survivor’s guilt. Similar to Utopia in RTD1; I watched that before seeing any Classic Who, and even without knowing who the Master was, just there being another Time Lord around had me intrigued.

I don’t think it’s an indication of the quality of the episode, or how it compared to the rest of the season. It’s just a number of how many people watched the episode on British TV, but also it’s a Eurovision based episode on the day of the Eurovision final, and aired between the footy and Eurovision, it’s going to get a lot of views.

Regardless of personal opinion on the episode, I personally wouldn’t think too much about viewer numbers, especially overnight numbers.

The execution didn’t help, rather than have the big reveal happen in front of Doctor Who (if he had expressed how big a deal this was it would have translated to the audience) it happened in front of two of the episodes supporting characters who didnt have a clue who she was. In keeping with Mrs Floods appeareances I guess…

I think with Utopia it was more like Ten’s reactions to what was happening and his urgency/fear putting their identity into context. And the reveal into context.

But when I re-watched it for the first time, I kind of already spawned into knowing who The Master was. My memory was so vague of my first watching, and all I remembered was the Futurekind. (I originally thought Jack was the Futurekind, and became insane through his trip in the vortex, and that he had TARDIS writing/ ink imprints on his face from being smushed against it).

I think toddler me was just face-blind lol

When I first watched Utopia, I didn’t really know who the Master was, just had a vague understanding it was a returning villain. After that I remember watching lots of videos about the Master.

So maybe viewers who don’t know who the Rani is will be like that here.

(By the way we can stop hiding the name Rani in this topic now because it’s really far down this topic, no-one should be spoiled by this now!)
