Episode Discussion: Rogue

Back in the memory hole where it belongs. It will probably come back as a joke at some point.

I am a bit disappointed that they did not bring that back. That might mean that they won’t fix it.

I was talking about covers in movies and shows. I have a lot of covers I enjoy outside of that, but in TV it both dates the show/movie and makes it feel like the music production team couldn’t be arsed to create something with enough emotional impact or the writer/director/producer didn’t think they’d be able to do a good enough job. Sure, sometimes it has some hidden meaning, but I’m tired of hearing Bad Guy whenever a villain has a Moment.

I enjoyed Rogue a lot. I would have liked it to extend a bit more as I felt that the Bridgerton riff had more possibilities, but what we had was beautifully done. I really liked the cosplay conceit. The Doctor’s romance with Rogue was beautifully done, even though it has kind of been done with Jack before, this was so much better and played to perfection. Ruby had some lovely moments. I really like Millie as an actor. I would have liked to see a bit more of her exploration of the setting as it all seemed to be over and done with very swiftly. However, if they intended to leave me wanting more, they really succeded! Lovely.

Very fun episode, that. Precisely when one was needed. After Space Babies (which I consider to be a standard, inoffensive, frothy season opener) we’ve had episodes which have been fairly experimental or high concept or been necessarily Doctor-lite. Here, Ncuti can come back and lead the charge with vigour and it is a huge injection of energy.

I really, REALLY enjoyed it for it’s light touch and allowing Ncuti to mark out his incarnation as something very different without losing all of the connective tissue to the past of the character. And I’m not just talking about the parade of past faces, which is rather on the nose (and joyously cheeky with the inclusion of Grant), more the scene on Rogue’s ship feels simultaneously both incredibly Doctor-like and absolutely brand new.

I did manage to get my thoughts out a lot more quickly than I did with Dot and Bubble but my main takeaway is this being a fantastic example of a regular Doctor Who episode. I struggle not to sound patronising but this episode was glorious in its revelling in being Doctor Who and being a bit naughty and cheeky with it. Not perfect but incredibly solid and the perfect palate cleanser pre-finale.

As a RTD-returning-sceptic, this new era is keeping me on my toes and even if I don’t think the season has been perfect I am glad that it’s not limping about just resting on its laurels. Nice to be challenged.

On to the finale!

Not only did I forget about Jabe, I bleedin’ forgot about Lynda with a Y :hushed::slightly_smiling_face:

Was that supposed to be romantic? My memory could serve me wrong, but Lynda always felt like common companion bait to me.

Could also be that I am reading a bit into it :slightly_smiling_face:
There’s just that one scene after they talk about her joining the TARDIS crew that they sort of go in for an awkward hug/kiss situation.

“I won’t get in your way”
“Wouldn’t mind it if you did”

But yeah I probably am reading a bit too much into it

Agreed, I need more Rogue.

Ncuti talking about his and Jonathan’s “chemistry” in Unleashed was hilarious… He wasn’t having to fake it!

Lots to say and think about this episode. It’s not my favourite of the season so far but it was a good solid Doctor Who romp.

I loved the idea of villainous cosplayers but I did think what was happening with the bodies being ‘taken’ wasn’t explained particularly well to start with. I think it’s because we saw in the trailers that Indira Varma was an alien but in fact she didn’t become an alien till partway through which confused me a little.

We don’t watch Bridgerton but I still enjoyed the Regency setting - it’s not an era Doctor Who has done much with which I discovered when I did stories set in the 18th/19th century for my marathon so it was quite refreshing.

I liked Rogue but maybe I’m getting old because I really struggled to catch a lot of the dialogue in his first scene with the Doctor - there was a lot of mumbling!

I appreciate the romance but, if I’m being particularly picky I do think the dance scene went on too long as did the kiss. Not for any reason other than it just seemed to make its point, linger and then linger some more past the point where it was doing anything for the story. I do agree with some opinions that maybe the Doctor/Rogue romance took slightly too much focus from the ‘monster’ plot but then maybe that was the point.

I liked the switcheroo with Ruby and the fifth alien (what was their name - that was another word which both Gatwa and Groff kept mumbling!)

LOVED the appearance of REG in the Doctor line up!!

My eldest appreciated the D&D reference as they are a huge fan and player.

And my wife loved this episode so all is good.

So not at the top of my list but not at the bottom and definitely one I’ll look forward to revisiting for some Doctor Who rompiness.

Subtitles my friend  Mumbling actors and too loud music is my constant nemesis!

Yeah that was nicely done, but why does Ruby’s neck make that cracking sound? Just to make the audience believe it probably.
My one criticism is that I think RTD put his foot in his mouth with his clip beforehand with the Official Doctor Who Podcast, he said we should count the aliens towards the end, so it didn’t really come as a surprise that it was Ruby. (Why do I keep watching these little clips beforehand :grimacing::smiling_face_with_tear:)

I enjoyed that one as well. As a huge D&D fan I just think the dice they chose were a bit lame. (I am allowed to say this I own either the same or a very similar set) Rogue just seems like someone who would own something a bit more fancy.

I own the same ones too :joy::game_die:

Mine are a bit bland as well, and haven’t seen use for almost 20 years now :smiling_face_with_tear::smiling_face_with_tear::smiling_face_with_tear:

My eldest had some lovely sets but recently lost them all! They run a D&D club at school and swear they brought the box home… But you know how responsible 15 year olds can be - so we pretty sure they left them at school and the dice are gone forever! :frowning:

I also have boxes and boxes of spindown D20s and boxes of D6s. Got a couple of other poly sets somewhere.

EDIT: Found them. The dark ones are a dark golden brown with gold flecks.

A little rough around the edges but a pretty solid 8/10 from me. So much of this season has episodes that feel like almost movie-long journeys. It makes up for the relatively shorter amount of episodes, in my opinion.

I didn’t love the bird-aliens, they were alright, and the whole cosplay angle already feels dated, but the romance of this episode and its production design were nothing short of exquisite. It feels like we got flavours of the Doctor here that were only ever hinted at, not only in the obvious queer stuff but the grief and struggles they have had opening up to people. That’s interesting.

So yeah, lots of little things bug me, like the stark difference between how the Doctor treated Jack compared to Rogue, but this story had me on its emotional message, which I think was key to it overall working for me.

Bear in mind back in “The Long Game”, 9 hugged Suki while saying “I’ll hug anyone.”…

Stop trying to take this away from me
