Whitaker gets points for being script editor, but his actual credited scripts I find quite underwhelming.

David Whitaker was a great script editor, sure, but his actual stories of this era were two dinky little episodes and The Crusade, it’s insane that he’s winning this.

I agree with @Speechless: I think most of us confuse Whitaker’s role as a script editor with his role as a writer - and his best writing work came after the Hartnell era.

This is still going because we’ve got the clash of titans here. The Crusade and The Rescue are great scripts. So are The Romans, Time Meddler and Masterplan. But, if I’m forced to go by the scripts alone, I think Marco Polo and The Aztecs edge Lucarotti into greatness.
Bowing to the anti Whitaker pressure, I voted him down, but I do so with no joy.

I know it’s dragging on but I can’t vote down Whitaker. Yes, he did great work AFTER being script editor, but he also shaped the show as we know it, started the whole novelisation phenomenon with a cracking good account of “The Daleks”. His ability to curate and polish scripts was superb. Script editor is still a writer’s role and he did is with consummate skill. He’s a legend.
