For this Elimination Game I have compiled all the stories that feature a companion debut, pre-revival. I did cheat a little with The Brigadier and Dodo. Even though he features prominently during the Third Doctor era, the Brig really isn’t a companion until he teams up with the Second in The Five Doctors, IMO. Dodo appears at the end of The Massacre, but really isn’t featured in that serial. The Ark is her real debut IMO.
For this I’m not looking for who your favourite companion is. I’m looking for your favourite ‘use’ of a companion in their debut story.

I voted down Invisible Enemy in part because I really don’t care for the episode, but also don’t really remember K9 doing much in it.
Also, while the King’s Demons isn’t the greatest episode, it’s about the only TV story that actually utilizes Kamelion in any form.

I think that by leaving Mel’s exit to the end of Dragonfire , it really allows the audience to understand what motivates Ace as a future companion, and what makes her different to Mel. Her monologue about working at the restaurant seems profound to me.
I don’t really think that the companions were used effectively in The Five Doctors . It feels a little bit like the writers just crammed all the guest companions in the story like clothing in a suitcase, with little thought to organization.

The Myth Makers nowadays is a 7 to 8/10 story for me. So why am I downvoting it? This time I’m gonna vote for which stories I think work as the companion’s introduction, not if I think they are good. If I did, I would be downvoting Mawdryn Undead and The Wheel in Space.
I also would like to argue that Steven’s introduction (as a companion) is actually in The Time Meddler; just as I would put The Ark for Dodo too and understand why the chosen one for Nyssa was Logopolis and not The Keeper of Traken. I disagree about the Brigadier tho; he plays a companion role in some Third Doctor stories, as unconventional it might be (The Silurians, The Mind of Evil, The Three Doctors…).

I love the Myth Makers but as an introduction for the brand new long term companion Katarina, it leaves a lot to be desired.
I don’t really agree with this, Steven is prominently featured in the end of the Chase - hiding on Mechanus from Daleks and Mechonoids with only his beloved Hi-fi for company.
I am not the biggest fan of the Chase but for introducing Steven it is really great

Can’t let my boy’s debut go out so soon. I mean, it really does set up how goddamn tragic (tradric) his life is, with him being an orphan, an outcast in his own society, and his brother dying in front of him, with Adric completely helpless to do anything. Also, with Romana unconscious for part of the serial, he acts as assistant to the Doctor, before stowing away on the TARDIS to become a companion.

Honourable mention to An Unearthly Child, which I think introduces all four characters so well, but be it Traken or Loggy, I think Nyssa and Tegan were introduced brilliantly. (I think Nyssa was better introduced in Traken, but she does witness the death of her home planet here with poise appropriate of her upbringing.)
