What the heck is going on here
Tecteun-Time
An Ood Halloween highlights for me what we could have had if Doom wasn’t flying solo on her missions all the time.
Doom and Brian the Ood really, really works as a duo (well trio if we count Mr. Ball), and the mission to San Francisco, Halloween 1999 works very well. Doom and Brian the Ood teleporting into a very Rainbow-coloured part of a Halloween parade and just blending in was a laugh.
I was basically holding my breath when the story teased that Brian the Ood had died. Don’t you dare touch my favourite Tuxedo-clad assassin Ood!
Hour 18: 4/5
I think that this is the biggest problem with her story. A companion would have helped to build her character and to have someone she could talk to would have helped some of the stories.
I agree. Or have Terri the grumpy office employee be on comms with Doom during her missions and have her assist Doom from afar.
There are so many flaws in Doom’s Day that could have easily been rectified if it actually had been taken seriously by the Doctor Who team, this was just so half-assed…
And it didn’t help that for the first ten months of 2023 this was the official way of celebrating 60 years of Doctor Who (and it doesn’t help much if we include Once and Future…)
Just listened to the last story from Four From Doom’s Day: Dark Space.
That was a bit tame.
Doom and the 12th Doctor on a mysterious planet and some sort of Time Sayer?
I just found my mind drifting so many times during this that I had to go back a couple of minutes three or four times.
Hour 19: 2,5/5
Next up the Big Finish stories, I am looking a bit forward to those. Every mission Doom has exactly one hour - which is how long each of those stories are
Ooh are they real-time? That would be interesting and fun. I never watched 24 but like the idea of real-time drama (like 42)
Just listened to the first Big Finish play “Dawn of an Everlasting Peace”.
This is what has been missing from Doom’s Day so far! Proper full cast audio drama where Sooz Kempner actually gets to put her stamp on the role.
Can we start a petition for Big Finish to redo something like the DWM comics for audio? To have something like this at the beginning would give the whole thing so much more.
Karlton! The delegates from the Daleks’ Master Plan showing up I did not see coming, but it was really good. And Doom can be something of a softie sometimes, Doom using her holosuit to say goodbye to the boy as his dead father was surprisingly moving
Hour 20: 4/5
Oh and yes they are doing real time with these
Basically to the second with this first one, Jacqueline Rayner did that really well
Listened to the second Big Finish hour: “A Date with Destiny”
Also a really good entry in Doom’s Day
Camille Coduri is great as Jackie Tyler in this, she really gets something to do and bounces great off of Doom. Probably the best use of Jackie in extended media I’ve experienced
They were never going to kill off Jackie though so it was no great surprise to find out she wasn’t the target, but it was a really good ride.
Even got an Abslom Daak mention
Hour 21: 4/5
Third Big Finish story: The Howling Wolves of Xan-Phear.
This one has a strong start, a rather weak middle act and a strong ending.
Best part of it is really Sooz Kempner as Doom. I kind of want a BF spin-off about The Lesser Order of Oberon with Doom, Brian the Ood and Terri
Doom went “Allons-y”, now where have I heard that before?
Hour 22: 3,5/5
Just a single Big Finish story and a short story left of Doom’s Day.
Honestly I am going to miss it
This story lost me before the ending. I thought that it was pretty week over all.
The way Doom figured out how to turn the innate abilities of the wolves against the Silence on a global scale was pretty well done I thought.
Also the pace of the story picked up quite a bit around the 45-minute mark where the Silence really became a threat due to their memory shenanigans.
I just found it a good well-rounded off story in the end, but there are about 20 minutes around the middle where it does drag on a bit.
Weakest of the box set so far but I still quite enjoyed it
Okay. Absolutely new favourite moment from Doom’s Day.
Conversation between Doom and The Eighth Doctor in “The Crowd”:
About 29 minutes in.
DOOM: Are you serious? I swore an allegiance.
DOCTOR: To whom? The Revenant? Coldstream? Oberon?
What have you neglected to tell the rest of the group @MrColdStream ???
I was waiting for someone to spot this! Took you long enough! And you people call yourself “fans”
Turns out I’m canonical in the DW universe! You will all listen to my own spin-off BF range in a few years time! I’m waiting for the call, Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nick Briggs!
(Seriously, though, what the heck is that supposed to reference? I’m curious now and want to hear it myself, but I’m still stuck in the Dark Times!)
(Oh, and I have sometimes regretted not picking a username that relates to DW in some way, but with this mention, and the fact that “Stream” is an anagram of something, it suddenly does. It’s a very deep-cut reference, but it counts).
I really don’t know what that is a reference to. Could just be a throwaway line in the end.
But it is what he says (listened to that little exchange like 10 times )
You should add that as a quote for everyone to marvel at! If you won’t, I will!
That happened about half an hour ago
Doom’s Day - Dying Hours - The Crowd
I liked the story, I liked the setting. I liked the cast and their performances. The Eighth Doctor was the perfect choice for this penultimate part of the event.
I haven’t heard anything with India Fisher as Charley more recent than about 2013. It seemed like her “Charley voice” fluctuated quite a bit at times, had trouble to distinguish that it was her speaking at times.
Paul McGann was really great when interacting with Doom, but he is great with everyone And the Eighth Doctor really doesn’t approve of Doom’s line of work.
Doom in the TARDIS
Hour 23: 4/5
Just a singular hour left of Doom’s run from Death
Tick tock…
