If Disney pull out we have to rebrand the show again. We have Nu Who (2005 - 2022), Disney Who (2023 - 2025), Nu Who part 2* (2027 - ).
(* Two Who.)

Same, so much stuff so little time
At this point the show will have more regenerations then the actual doctor
My happiness about this just dropped a little when I realised we probably wonât get a Christmas special this year, maybe not even in 2026?!
I hope they can still do those. Itâs the best part of Christmas for me
Honestly, this already seemed pretty likely.
I will be disappointed if the next season of Doctor Who ends up as a UK only thing, of course. Do you think that âneeds to watch Doctor Whoâ would be accepted as a reason for requesting citizenship?
Had a snarky comment loaded, but it wasnât constructive, so I didnât fire.
VPN babes.
Post must be at least 12 iPlayers long
The BBC makes loads of money selling Doctor Who around the world, itâs their most profitable drama. No way theyâd keep it to themselves.
Personally I just think they should open up iPlayer as a subscription service around the globe, and keep all the profits themselves, it seems like an obvious thing to do!!
Iâd be more likely to subscribe to iPlayer then a lot of the other streaming services if I was actually able to. Not just for Doctor Who, eitherâŚ
The only problem with that is that all streaming services lose money and I am not sure that another one (even one with as strong of a brand as the BBC) would do better. They have also sold all their international rights and it would take time to get everything back.
Two more RTD-penned seasons? Arenât we lucky. /s
Yes, and even for stuff thatâs not licensed internationally, theyâd have to negotiate all their contracts with the various unions to include international streaming rather than UK only.
I think BBC is different though because first of all they have a huge back catalogue, they already license it out to places like BritBox so we know it makes money, and also they wouldnât need to spend the billions that Netflix, Disney, and Apple spend. People would pay for another series like Downtown Abby that costs them next to nothing to make!
Oh sorry Downton was ITV but you get my point.
Selling content people want to see instead of erasing the tapes, though?
Thatâs crazy talk.
The thing is that HBO also loses money, and they were in a similar situation with a huge back catalogue of great stuff.
And in a similar situation with erasing content instead of releasing it!
This would be a great drag name.
I think the difference is, Disney+ make exclusive content for Disney+ and donât sell the rights to anyone else, and if they get no subs they get no money, so they need to justify the costs of making that content.
Whereas BBC make the content for the UK people, who already pay for it in their taxes so they are a âbuilt inâ audience, and then selling it abroad is just an added bonus. They can either sell it to Netflix or Disney or someone else, or they can set up their own streaming service and get 100% of the profits.
Just depends on how popular it is I guess, and they have probably ran the numbers and found that itâs best to keep selling to lots of different companies for now. But I think it would streamline it.
NGL I find this very reassuring. I was beginning to believe that we were reaching the end, but it didnât feel like the moment had been prepared for.
I canât see any circumstances that weâd get a new series in 2026 now, but I still hold out hope for a Christmas special or two.
This is what Iâve been thinking ever since Britbox was launched over here. Iâd be more than happy to subscribe to the iPlayer if that meant I could watch Doctor Who (and other great shows; there is no shortage of them!) on it.
