In the modern era, I’m actually rather happy to see companions survive the Doctor, because that used to be the norm!

True , but “just this once” kind of heavily implies that that is not always the case, which it kind of is for all the companions since 2005

Ok I’ve had a little think and a total change of heart because I had an idea.
I want to add a “characters” page that is searchable, sortable, filter able, just like stories.
I will put everyone there as a character. The Fourth Doctor. Sarah Jane Smith. Robin Hood. The Mara. Daleks. Yes, even species are a character.
Then people can filter by “companions”, “villains”, “real-life” (still not sure about that), “species”
So they can click Time Lords and see the Doctors, Romana, The Master, the Monk etc.
Then separately on the Stories filter you’ll be able to filter by Doctor, character, companion, villain, historical, and species. Best of both worlds.
THEN I’ll add actors into the mix eventually so you’ll be able to see every Character played by David Tennant (including audios, it’s more than you think).
AND in future the ability to mark characters as “favourites” which will feed into Recommendations.
This should be the perfect solution. Thoughts?

I’d make sure that you can have multiple versions of the character, and multiple actors.

Yes I was thinking original actor and other actors, so things like recasting The First Doctor, and listing every actor to play The Master etc.

And I’ll keep characters as hierarchical so there is a character called “The Master” and then each incarnation is a separate “child” of that, like we have now
(Child being the technical term, not literal)

Sounds like a plan. Besides time lords, there’s always things like one actor playing the actual Robin Hood, one actor playing robot Robin Hood, etc, but those can all be children of the main Robin Hood entry…

Yes. There is a character called “the Doctor” and all doctors are children of that.

Yep, with the amount of different series and such we have, he isn’t always the main character, after all.

When I started the site it was just the TV show so the Doctor got special status but actually now they are not always the main character

One thing I would like when you are done with the updated characters page is that I would like characters to be searchable.
