The Monthly Adventures #055 - “The Twilight Kingdom” by Will Shindler

This story seems pretty much universally disliked and I might be one of the first to say I simply don’t get the hate. This is a perfectly fine story, not great, but certainly worthy of some praise. I see why some may find it boring but personally, I had a good time - 7/10

The Monthly Adventures #056 - “The Axis of Insanity” by Simon Furman

Yet another story I simply do not understand the disdain for. The Axis of Insanity is a super fun time that, whilst a little over the top at points, has some utterly incredible performances. Who said Five had no interesting audios? - 8/10

I remember really enjoying this one. Also, I believe the actor playing the jester also played Biggs Darklighter in A New Hope.

Erm… The Mutants and A Town Called Mercy want to know why they’re not at the top of Garrick Hagon’s IMDB…

Because unfortunately Star Wars trumps Doctor Who in the great pop culture wars.

I know. I’m talking generally here. About the wider universe.

There’s a wider universe beyond TARDIS Guide? What is this blasphemy you speak of?

The Monthly Adventures #057 - “Arrangements for War” by Paul Sutton

A stunningly beautiful love story set under the shadow of conflict, Arrangements for War is truly unlike other Doctor Who stories. A glorious character study with perhaps one of the best casts the audios has ever seen. And oh god that ending - 10/10

The Monthly Adventures #058 - “The Harvest” by Dan Abnett

A thoroughly fine affair that just so happens to introduce one of Doctor Who’s best characters. I love Hex but the rest of The Harvest ranges from fun but generic action story to trope-laden bore - 7/10

Apart from the fantastic introduction of Hex, I find that the Cyberman plot in The Harvest is fascinating. The idea that they’re missing something and want to be un-converted, that they need bodies of flesh to achieve victory.

I do like the idea but I don’t think it’s done particularly well.

Case and point, I kind of forgot that whole plotline until reading this comment.

Actually, the surprising thing about this story is that it’s set in 2021 and there’s no mention of Covid or masking.

I can’t get over how the tossed out an interesting idea (Cybermen wanting to be human again) to make the them seem like boring killbots.

The Monthly Adventures #059 - “The Roof of the World” by Adrian Rigelsford

I’m back! I’ve been gone a little while and its not because I lost interest in the show, I just got burnt out from the amount of Doctor Who stuff I was consuming. Anyways, back to bankrupting myself buying Big Finish audios.

A great idea and attempt at character work that doesn’t really reach the finishing line. Eldritch horrors and fish out of water companions have been done a lot better elsewhere - 7/10

I’m glad you’re back! I always enjoy your reviews, especially the Torchwood ones

The Monthly Adventures #060 - “Medicinal Purposes” by Robert Ross

This one’s pretty hard to sit through. Between the poor story and the blatant ableism, it’s a chore at points. The cast really is trying but there was no saving this - 3/10

The Monthly Adventures #061 - “Faith Stealer” by Graham Duff

The Divergent Arc continues to disappoint on delivering its mission statement but that doesn’t mean Faith Stealer is a bad time. A genuinely funny and wonderfully creative adventure through a religious safe haven that struggles to perfect its script - 7/10

The Monthly Adventures #062 - “The Last” by Gary Hopkins

A bleak and atmospheric story that does not relent for two and a half hours, The Last is a shockingly underrated entry into the Divergence Arc with a fantastic villain and a script that’s just missing a couple beats - 8/10

The Monthly Adventures #063 - “Caerdroia” by Lloyd Rose

A wildly under talked about gem that lives up to everything the Divergence Arc could’ve been. Fun and witty with an excellent gimmick that just struggles a little bit at the end - 9/10
