Comic Chat (DW+More)

Just got a large amount of new comics from my local comic shop.

I’m thinking of doing little spoiler-free reviews of them if anyone is interested?

I love the artwork… except for the little girl. She kinda had the same expression the entire mini and while I understand why and every other choice they made around her, she becomes the weak link for me because she is a bit of a caricature.

Plus the colours are gorgeous. A huge problem I have with modern comics is ugly colors.

Oh the Missy comic was great!!! Working my way through the titan ones. I’m not a huge comic lover but some of them are really nice, I don’t connect with them as much as I do TV or audio I’m afriad. I really don’t like too, how the majority of them are so reliant on cameos, references and such like. I also read the Torchwood Titan range today… Abysmal.

That’s what you get when you have Barrowman write them

Thinking about doing a deep dive into Legion of Super Heroes. From the 70s to 10s, perhaps.

I laughed… so much at this you have no idea :sob: campest reference

Just finished the 13th Doctor’s titan run. Some good stories, shame it ended with a lead-in to the next volume which hasn’t happened years on.

The current run of Uncanny X-Men is so, so good, I honestly can’t recommend it enough!

I’m planning on getting back into comic reading - and I mean specifically non-Who comics. I used to read new Marvel and DC comics weekly but I stopped because I didn’t have the time (and I felt a bit fatigued by superheroes). But the Titan collections have made me want to jump back in.

Any recommendations on recent Marvel/DC/other comic collections I should check out? Anything will do! I’m planning on reading exclusively collected editions because that way, I can space out my reading a bit more between the other stuff I’m reading.

The X-Men comics look promising at least. And maybe the Spidey ones as well.

I should probably give Saga a go as well…

Both the current Ultimate Universe and the Absolute Universe are good. All three of the Absolutes are worth at least checking out, Wonder Woman is my favorite. From the Ultimate ones I’d recommend Ultimates, X-Men and Spider.

Fantastic Four by Ryan North is really fun. Birds of Prey by Kelly Thompson is a great return to form for the team. And World’s Finest continues to be great.

From the current X-Men comics I really like the three main titles (Uncanny, Exceptional and X-Men), and would also include NYX. It’s better appreciate if you know the characters NYX is tackling tho (New X-Men vol 2 is great once Yost gets on the writting, so and older comic recommendation thrown in too).

A lot of that is very recent and not collected tho, so for a complete run I’d say checking Captain Marvel by Kelly Thompson is worth it, specially now it’s complete. Her Black Widow and Deadpool are good too.

If you’re looking for X-Men books, I can gladly help!

(This will all be new series from the From the Ashes relaunch)

The main X-Men book is a very mixed bag in my opinion, so I recommend just trying out volume 1 and see what you think of it.

Uncanny X-Men is amazing, I highly encourage you to read it.

Exceptional X-Men is a lovely comfort read. It takes its time, but it is worth it.

Phoenix is an epic space saga. Worth a read, but it’s serialised nature means you can’t just get the first volume, you’ll probably want to get the next volumes too.

Mystique was a great miniseries, though quite dark in tone.

Absolutely give Saga a go

Other than that, as far as current runs from DC and Marvel go, I’d recommend DC’s Absolute Universe line, and Marvel’s Ultimate Universe line

Both alternate but ongoing universes where they’ve been shaped somewhat by a villain, but the main thing is that they’re doing new and unique takes on the characters within their universes, and written by just some all star writing talent

To give a rundown:

Absolute DC:

  • Absolute Batman: A working class Batman who’s friends with multiple characters who are villians in the main universe. Alfred is a secret agent who’s stalking Batman.
  • Absolute Wonder Woman: No amazons, no Themyscira, this Wonder Woman was raised by Circie in Hell, and has a skeletal pegasus.
  • Absolute Superman: Krypton blew up when Kal-El was already an adult, so arriving on earth he wasn’t raised by the Kents. Superman explicitly is a hero of the working class (with class disparity being a bigger thing on this world’s Krypton) rather than a beacon of hope for all.

Ultimate Marvel:

  • Ultimate Spider-Man: Peter only becomes Spider-Man as an adult, he’s already married to MJ with kids. Aunt May recently died, but Uncle Ben and Jameson work together, formerly at the Bugle, though after Fisk bought it out, they’ve started their own paper.
  • Ultimate Black Panther: Wakanda is one of the few places that’s not ruled by The Maker’s underlings, but there’s a war brewing, T’Challa is making allies (Storm and Killmonger), and preparing for war with Lord Ra and Lord Khonshu, who are trying to take it over.
  • Ultimate X-Men: Taking the basic premise of X-Men of people getting powers as teens, and telling a kind of new story with it. There’s some main universe characters here (Armour, Nico Minoru), but they’re not the ‘big names’. It’s set in Japan and has an art style and storytelling style a lot closer to Manga than western comics.
  • The Ultimates: Basically The Avengers, After The Maker screwed with everything, The Ultimates are trying to put things back together, gathering heroes and returning powers to people who never ended up getting them. Made up of Iron Lad (Tony Stark), Captain America (Steve Rodgers), Thor and Sif, and Doom (Reed Richards)
  • Ultimate Wolverine: Weapon X meets the Red Room, Wolverine is the Winter Soldier, created by the evil leaders of teh Eurasian Republic: Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red.

Start with this. You are going to love it!

Plus Wonder Woman: Historia is a nice complementary read to Absolute Wonder Woman since Kelly is kinda using that as a basis for her run too.

And its a fantastic comic on its own.

Thanks a bunch for your recommendations! I’ll definitely start by checking out Saga and the X-Men books (especially considering the helpful list compiled by @DontBlink!) and let you know how I find them

So excited to get back into comic books and discuss them with you!

Edit: I’ve been looking at the ultimate universes of both DC and Marvel and they’ve seemed interesting, so I look forward to trying them out as well. But I think I’ll take @Tian’s advice and start with Saga because I’ve read way too few comics from outside the Big Two.

It is great. Brian K Vaughn is my favourite comic writer. Saga is the only comic I still buy.

I really like his Saga and his Runaways. He also wrote two issues for Wonder Woman v2 that are quite fun.

Y the Last Man is also great. I have not read his Wonder Woman.
