Browser talk

I don’t know if I trust Apple that much more :frowning:

Have you found a good replacement for Gmail? I need a new mail after changing my surname when I got married and I don’t know what to use.

I don’t get why people don’t trust Apple. They are the only company who say they believe Privacy is a fundamental human right. They bake privacy into everything they do, and talk about it at every product launch.

From a technical level, if you look into it, Apple are very good at privacy.

The Arc guys are working on something called Dia now…

The Zen Browser does do the whole sidebar tab thing, though.

Looks interesting. I like that it is not US based.

I am looking in to this one now!

Chrome on iPhone doesn’t have an ad blocker does it?

I couldn’t use that :man_gesturing_no:

This is the same website, a local newspaper, on Chrome then in Safari. I can’t stand ads, using Chrome would drive me insane lol.

(Scrolling the page as an autoplaying video and is slow and choppy on Chrome)

And since Google is an advertising company they really don’t want you to block ads, which is why they are making ad blockers on the desktop less effective.

I hear you, and you are probably right. I just don’t trust any multi-billion dollar company, especially not US ones.

Apple recently got in trouble with the UK because their stuff is too private, and the UK wanted to be able to snoop at people’s phones if they get arrested :grimacing:

So Apple had to disable the 100% private backup service that they offer the rest of the world. Now they are appealing the UK.

If they are getting told off for being too private, then I believe them. No-one ever said Google was too private and secure

“Arguing that you don’t care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say”

Privacy is a right, not a reflection of guilt!

This looks really interesting. Might change to it.

I use Firefox on all my devices. I have for 15+ years. I have Chrome installed on my main PC too, but that is for my second monitor. Easier for multitasking. Mainly it’s used for YouTube.

I almost did, and I still have it on my system, so it’s still possible it could make a comeback for me. Just ran into some trouble involving containers, and Florp was pretty much my next choice, so I went with that.

I switched to Firefox a few years ago because of what Chrome was doing with weakening ad blockers.

I haven’t really liked Firefox’s direction, though, and their updates to their privacy policy recently seemed worrisome, so I thought it was a good time to explore other browsers.

Incidentally, a browser I want to like is Ladybird, but it’s way too early to use, and isn’t even alpha. (Summer 2026 is when they are targeting for going alpha.)

Ladybird is interesting in that it isn’t based on Chrome or Firefox, and is actually being created from scratch!

I’m now looking into using Brave as my primary browser instead. It has built-in ad-blocking (I tested with Shauny’s website above, both on Chrome and Brave, and the latter loaded the page faster with no ads). I already use a separate VPN app as well when I need extra privacy.

Been using Chrome p much since it came out out of habit but at some point I’ll likely switch to a non Chromium browser

I don’t know much about Brave, I know there was lots of controversy about the founder a while ago, no idea how much of this is still relevant as it’s old but just posting it here:

I use Chrome but i’m aware it uses a lot of a computers resource so maybe switching would be good.

I’m a Firefox user. I’ve grown increasingly disillusioned with Chrome over the years, and I appreciate how customisable and privacy-focused it is. Also, I haven’t seen a single online ad since I made the switch. So worth it.
