Nick has a reputation at Big Finish of not having much of an imagination when it comes to sort of “out there” ideas or concepts that don’t have a logical basis (think stories like 73 Yards). Nick always requires an explanation or at the very least an acknowledgement of not having an explanation.
So that’s why he writes like that
at the very least an acknowledgement of not having an explanation.
Doctor of War
I love how in the press release the people involved didn’t even know what was going on.
I actually appreciate what he says. I like answers that are based in reality, or have no explanation. When writers settle on magic or “power of love” type explanations, I roll my eyes and feel unsatisfied.
He can hold his arm up and a squirrel will crawl up him and go in his hand
I agree, but I think you also have to respect he runs big finish by going “god I hate stories like this, hey producers is it actually a good story like this?”
Especially given some of the comments Ive heard about ither ways he runs BF, such as “I dont like the Shulka Doctor so we wont do it”.
Oh, 100%. I respect that he will cater for fans/writers even though he doesn’t like it/get it. And he will ask others for input when it’s outside of his “wheelhouse”.
That’s fair, but I was thinking more about how his own writing is often on the extreme other end of the scale, often feeling very mechanical and one-note
Eh. I’ve never had an issue with his writing.
often feeling very mechanical and one-note
This describes the way he creates characters. His character work is atrocious.
The characters he creates only exist to serve the story. They don’t exist once the story ends. Each one just another cog in the mechanics of his stories.
He just wants to write for the Doctor and companion, everyone else is an afterthought.
I’m not sure I’ve encountered a Big Finish writer who is worse at character work than Briggsy, but of course he doesn’t listen to criticism so that will never change.
That’s fair, but I was thinking more about how his own writing is often on the extreme other end of the scale, often feeling very mechanical and one-note
Yeah he can be quite formulaic. The Terry Nation of BF???
Welcome to the forum @JakeM917 - do pop over to Introductions and tell us a bit about yourself and how you come to be here.
While I can’t say anything about how he might’ve gotten here in the grander scheme of things, I think I can make a guess as to how Jake came to this thread specifically…
Nick has a reputation at Big Finish of not having much of an imagination
Wait! Is @JakeM917 the guy who makes the podcast notes?
Dude you’re a legend! I love reading about this stuff, but can never be bothered sitting through 30 minutes of Briggsy talking about an inside joke that started down the pub ![]()
Thank you for the efforts!
I understand this part is referring to the whole logical basis thing, but still, I think “He doesn’t like ‘out there’ stories that much,” about the man who wrote Creatures of Beauty is a very funny thing to read out of context.
Of course! I guess I didn’t realize I’ve never posted to the forum before lol. I’m a longtime Patron here (I get a lot of use out of the site personally as well as for my posts, so it gets my support), and I’ll check in from time-to-time to lurk and see what kind of discussion happens here versus on Reddit.
Glad to have popped in, and always feel free to reach out!
The 2026 Eighth Doctor Adventures sets have been renamed. Rather than being New Pathways 1 and 2, they will now be titled The Eighth Doctor Adventures: New Pathways and The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Fear the Reapers
This makes me wonder if the Reapers from Father’s Day are in the second box set.
To be fair, given the likely expenses of getting Richard E. Grant into a recording booth, yeah, I probably wouldn’t think it good to see that happen under a company where the executives aren’t keen on him. That can easily lead to mishaps. Like the TV industry, but smaller scale. You should always be ideally in a situation where the executives of a creative company like what you’re all about, or you’re likely toast before you’ve even got your first sales in.
