I literally just bumped it up half a star earlier today after a rewatch because it’s got some of my favorite jokes of the show so I guess we’re balancing each other out with our rating changes at least
Admittedly, it has some good scenes with Graham and Yaz’s family. If I cut it down to just that, I’d rate it higher.
Edit: In fact, thinking about it, I’ll leave Arachnids, and just bump up Time to match.
I think a lot of what I love about it is that it’s full of moments of 13 at her most autistic. Also some great early Thasmin moments
Mostly I was very disappointed in the main plot, and also the lack of proper resolution and wrapup. It honestly felt like they cut or forgot to put in chunks of it. And the bit with Ryan playing music absolutely did not work for me…
Also, it absolutely should’ve been a sequel to Planet of the Spiders, or at least had that mentioned.
It has more in common with The Green Death than Planet of the Spiders.
Well, no AI, no scenes with the Doctor dressed as a milkman/cleaning lady, and no companion departures. They were both ecological, though, and it did have giant maggots.
Green Death is also a lot better then Arachnids…
The spiders were also the result of big business spewing its waste products about willy nilly.
Average Rating: 3.51/5.
I’ve rated 468 stories though I’ve completed a total of 944 stories (haven’t gotten about to rewatches & relistens).
&, I’ve favourited 144! I don’t know how uncommon that is, but I do end up liking some stories a very great deal. /lh /pos

Arachnids cannot be forgiven due to the absolutely crazy resolution “no, don’t shoot the spiders and give them a quick merciful death, instead let’s trap them here so they can starve and/or cannibalise each other”.
What was she thinking why not drop them off on an uninhabited planet or something?!
People say this a lot but like I would absolutely not call shooting something a “quick merciful death,” especially when we literally see the mother spider writhing in pain after being shot. And it might not be the most realistic idea but trapping them in the panic room is very much presented as letting them live out their natural lives and not starving them to death, with even the spider expert in the group calling it a humane death (plus it is established that there’s a ton of food in there although unclear in what form and if the spiders could eat it).
I mean a simple “I materialised the TARDIS around the panic room and set the spiders off on Metebelis 3” afterwards would have solved everything and given us a wee bit of Classic Who fan service in the meantime - Win-win
Why did you give Year of the Pig 0.5 stars? I’m intrigued.
Because it’s a load of self-satisfied, condescending nonsense which goes on for ages and mainly consists of a talking pig listing what he wants to eat. My longer marathon review is linked below.
I know lots of people like it but it just isn’t for me.
Sounds like you might not be gravitate towards stories that lean more on the fluffier side? I often feel that many of the the main range stories outstay their welcome with the 2.5 hour length.
Fluffy is the last word I’d use to describe that story. Arrogant would be a more apposite epithet
I have little caring for it either - I find it to be very dithering for the majority of Part 1, & only really bothers to do things in Part 2. I can’t rate it much lower than what I have because it’s probably good for somebody, just not for me. /neu
However it does have a bit of Peri saying something to the effect of “This isn’t my Doctor”, which I’ve never liked, regardless of era or companion dynamic. That does sour it more than it would if it hadn’t though I maintain the slow walkabout of a plot it has. /m
