This gave me an idea: maybe BF should release a story that is constantly interrupted by fake ads, and the Doctor has to figure out how to stop it. It would drive most fans insane!

That’s actually kind of brilliant. It almost sounds like a Rob Shearman idea since he opened Jubilee with that fake movie trailer.

Half reminds me of Cascade Which starts with the openning of a different torchwood story (Zone 10) before playing a glitched version of the torchwood theme and then getting into it, with more glitches iterruping thoughout playing the parts from earlier or later in the story (including the interviews)

‘Like’ from the 6 and Peri boxset has something slightly along those lines!

Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to check it out!

I really liked this, playing with teh audio format was really fun, an interesting setting, and fun interplay between ‘monster’ and antagonist

8/10

A very strong 8/10 for me. Lots to love about this audio and in my opinion Big Finish’s first published work that really sold me on them.

I listened to this quite some time ago, and it was an early favourite of mine. The early Main Range is a little up-and-down, but this one quickly sold me on the format. Felt like a full-cast dramatisation of a Virgin New Adventure. (One of the good ones, without all the gratuitous sex and gore for the sake of it.)

Again this was the first time I have listened to this story. It came as a bit of a shock to hear the TV versions of 6 & Peri with all the bickering since up until now I have been listening to more recent Colin audios where their relationship has mellowed considerably. I didn’t like Peri on TV because of this & her tarty dress sense, but I do like her on audio normally.

It was also a bit jarring to hear Lisa Bowerman playing a different character right at the very time she was just only becoming established as Bernice - nearly as bad as casting Elisabeth Sladen in Walking to Babylon and only being able to hear her as Sarah Jane Smith! (Not to mention Sophie as Miranda in Beyond The Sun.)

It just seems so bizarre now as to why they kept using such recognisable voices.

As for the story itself, I really enjoyed it - definitely the best one so far.

I’m still very new to audio adventures in general this being the third ive ever listened to, and in all honesty I didn’t really enjoy this story.

it was good in places using the audio format well however on a whole it just wasn’t all that engaging for me.

5/10 for me as of right now (I feel like my audio ratings will change the more I listen to the format)

I think that, for me, this was a solid 6, or maybe leaning towards a 7. It was a good story, sure, but I think it was just missing some ingredient that could’ve made it great in my eyes. I’m sure I’ll re-evaluate this opinion once I’ve listened to more.

I love when there are stories that are so clearly written for the medium they’re in! The sound creature and the soundscape make this a really cool experience. I think the plot, with its twists is told really well that way too. Also, Six and Peri both have really recognizable voices, and their dynamic is really interesting, so they make this fun too.

Pretty okay. I love the whole concept and how it already plays with the format of Audio (seriously, this one couldn’t be told through any other medium than audio). Unlike Slyvester and to a certain extent Peter too, Colin slips into the Audios with more ease. For a first solo outing for 6 in the MR it very much does the job, Nicola and Colin still have such a fun dynamic between each other that can be felt here also. There are a lot of good bits and overall I think it’s quite a solid one, but I must admit despite having listened to this one more “recent” I don’t recall too much of it. It’s still one I very much enjoyed and compared to the first two, it’s the highlight of those bunches!

Episodes 1 and 2

It’s been years since I last listened to this. Fair to say that Big Finish have evolved over the last 25 years, but I still remember the thrill of listening to a brand new full cast Sixth Doctor story. I suppose, for me, the story will ever have a hefty dose of nostalgia attached. It was just so wonderful to have Colin back. That said, whilst a straightforward enough story, I do think this does a very good job of evoking the feel of ol’ Sixie’s era. It’s vivid and clear in my head. The plot’s pretty simple and we’ll come back to sound creatures many times over the years, yet…

…I think it’s easy to forget just how exciting these early audios were for many of us and how solid a job they did of re-establishing full cast Doctor Who. Are there better stories? Undoubtedly, but then that never was the point. Do I enjoy hearing Colin and Nicola in role? Yup. Am I entertained? Sure am. Really enjoying listening to this again after so long. Oh, and it’s got the wonderful Peter Miles in it as well, don’tcha know?

Episodes 3 and 4

All done! Well, that was a thoroughly enjoyable relisten. I know there are far better Sixie stories to come (two of my early favourites just around the corner, with the utterly delightful The Marian Conspiracy and the deeply classic The Spectre of Lanyon Moor), but this was still tremendously entertaining.

Actually, a nice reflection on the role of technology and misinformation in modern politics. We have an entire story revolving around fake news (Krane’s fictional endorsement of Purnell) and deep fakes (Soundform Krane’s manipulation of the original recording) that actually turn out to be more accurate (as in closeness to the truth).

Anyway, enjoyed dipping back into this one.

This gets a solid 6/10 from me. It’s not a bad story but any stretch of the term, but I really don’t get the hype. I’m happy to know I’m not alone in that, reading this thread.

I thought I’d squee here instead of the main “What are you listening to” thread.

I’ve just finished part one and I’m so giddy right now, it’s not even funny. It’s been years since I’ve played this audio and listening to the wisecracks (both silly and acerbic) shooting out of Six gets me so excited. I feel like I’ve been rejuvenated, like I’m discovering him for the first time all over again. I just love him so much, and Peri is the perfect right-hand woman. I love how she doesn’t know what to make of him, but in an endearing way. It’s the complete opposite of when I read “Time of Your Life” the other day, when Six and his female companion were constantly irritating the other but in a very negative manner. You couldn’t find any glimmers of friendship beaming through like you can in “The Twin Dilemma”.

But back to Whispers, I love how the Doctor is this know-it-all, but also doesn’t take himself seriously (I can hear him refuting this comment in my head lol). I keep laughing when I listen to this, he’s such a clown xD. I feel like I’m never able to properly articulate my feelings about these sorts of things, but I’ve become so familiarized with the less abrasive, grandpa characterization of Six that listening to this version of him just makes me overjoyed. It’s been a long while. Anyway! time to press play again. YAY.
