Oh, this one! I simply adore it. I do think unlike Scherzo it works at its very best when you listen to it for the first Time, I think on repeats it does lose something. That said, this one is still so good regardless and one of the rare Times where not only the Concept remembers what Opportunities this new World offers, but also using it to such a good Extent.
I am not sure how far I can call this a proper Story, it’s more an Experience than anything else. And while this may sound to some like a bad Thing, in this case it’s absolutely a good Thing, with no Doubts!
I am not sure how to properly articulate my Thoughts on this one, besides saying how much I appreciate it and like it overall!
Rumors say that I regret to this Day listening to this Day I regret listening to this one so late around 2 or 3 am
I am fully aware this one needs a relisten but I am not in the camp that thinks this is one of the best things to come from BF ever. I didn’t really enjoy it at the time, I remember that much.
I really like this story. It probably works best the first time, because that twist is such a shocker. when you hear it for the first time.
Aside from that though, it’s a terribly well put together, and really keeps you gripped, even as the status quo shifts and shifts and shifts.
It’s been forever since I heard this one and if I’m honest I barely remember the finer details. I did enjoy it and the twist is a goodie but mostly in my head this is the one with Seán and the one where Eight eats a rat
A great thing about having an unreliable memory: I had listened to this before, but I had completely and utterly forgotten the twist. I like this one because the story is very 1984-esque, has evil rat-eating Paul McGann, it’s very mysterious, and really lets you try to figure things out for yourself (which you don’t, but hey, it’s part of the fun).
This one is wild. Just insane. It’s kind of let down on further relistens after knowing the twist but that initial journey through “What is going on?” is just outstanding and the journey through the story is still pretty fantastic.
I really enjoyed this! The scenes transitioning into recordings being watched by another person, and the repetition in dialogue, were great storytelling choices that reminded me of Inception. I think this would hold up for me on relistens, even knowing the ending. 9/10.
So, I listened to this the first time in May of last year, and I found it one of those stories that tried a bit too much and spent most of the time scratching my head and being confused about what was going on. I had to check the Wiki for a plot summary afterwards, which is never a good sign. That being said, I appreciate the effort, the performances and the Orwellian atmosphere.
I haven’t listened to this since, but I probably should. So this rating and review is based on that listening. 5/10.
Actually, forget what I said about Shearman last time. Robert is a very normal guyperson. He writes perfectly standard stories that can be consumed by the general public. Scherzo? Basic. That’s like Blink on TV. Very approachable story that just seems a little intimidating on the surface. Meanwhile, there are very scary stories out there that disguise themselves as innocent and totally not scary looking spinning tops. And does mum tell you to watch out for those? No! The most you’ll get is a warning not to eat rats, which isn’t even a slightly prevalent happening.
That sounds like the start of a very good very pretentious analysis of The Natural History of Fear, but that’s not it, because I don’t have anything of worth to say. I’m just sitting here, staring, and if I’m not, then I still think I am, so i must anyways, even if just for the sake of metaphor. That’s me saying nonsense to make it look like my thought processes have ascended to the same level of that of Jim, because I don’t actually have anything to say, but I already said that, not that that matters.
Idk if I will ever fully comprehend this story, is the way I feel right now. Mortimore is just so… something. I don’t know. I am too enamored (I think is what I am I’m not sure) to make sense. Which is a good description of my feelings I should think. Society
This is how I felt the first time I listened to it too. I was so overwhelmed by how good it was I listened to it again.
I haven’t since then, but I didn’t think it lost any merit when I did. It’s a really intricate story in which every word matter, and it builds its tension up, up, up, up, until you have that explosive ending that to this day makes me shiver.
This story puts an entire society in a bottle, ups the pressure to the highest and during the two hours of its runtime we are witnessing it on the verge of exploding. And then it does.
And honestly it’s the best performance both McGann and India have given us. That says a lot, because they are both fantastic.
Just finished relistening to this one and I actually reduced my rating a little. Everyone who has said ‘this story is incomprehensible’ is completely right. It’s so atmospheric and I think that’s what sticks in the mind so on that level it completely succeeds but I think I liked this story more when I couldn’t remember the finer details of it
Impeccable acting. Amazing vibes. Excellent dystopian world. Unbelievable twist at the end.
But did any of it make sense? No. Not at all.
Rating it 7/10 for the vibes but I don’t think it was actually a cohesive story, sorry
Why were they watching Doctor Who? That’s so meta. I enjoyed those bits at the start, how they were filing the episodes, it made me think this was going to be TARDIS Guide: The Audio Drama
