Audio Club: The Natural History of Fear

Think this is why a relisten once I knew the twist didn’t land as well for me and I just found it good, not amazing tbh! Past the twist and the vibes there just isn’t really much there

I’m glad people seem to be seeing through the Emperor’s New Clothes on this one a little as I always felt a bit like an outsider not thinking this was the best thing ever.

(I still maintain having an audio about the regulars acting out different roles in a story straight after the introduction of one of those regulars was an odd choice - it’s not a great way of helping us get to know C’RIzz).

A Doctor Who story with some… maybe not hate, but serious reservations about Doctor Who as a media franchise. I read 1984 a lot in high school, and I like this story’s spin on the same ideas, but then it goes one further and end with a violent revolution… that is just as full of dread as the norm it’s rebelling against. I consider myself to be quite the idealist when it comes to fiction and what it is capable of as an aspect of society, but I surprisingly dug the more pessimistic stance this takes on such things. Yeah, keep watching your fantasy heroics on a screen, stay docile, just like we want you to be… Chilling.

It also wins points just for how unique it is among the Doctor Who audios, even the more experimental efforts. While I prefer Deadline as a story commenting on Doctor Who’s entire existence, I have sizeable respect for this one’s comparable commentary on the societal function of Doctor Who as fiction.

The Orwellian society presented here is just amazingly well done. I could see early Narvin thriving here

Today is high productivity day!

This story feels really weird but I like it. It’s got so much tension and atmosphere that you can’t help but be entranced. It’s also quite confusing, but purposefully so, so I like that. Although I do have to say that I didn’t actually understand the twist at all until I looked up the summary just now, but that may be on me for listening to this on five hours of sleep. Yeah, great vibes, Paul McGann eats a rat, lots of weirdness, love it.

And Seàn Carlsen!! I didn’t know he was in this one so when he showed up I literally jumped up at the voice because I was excited. Kept wondering if there’s any way one could make the character be connected to Narvin while listening. He’s got such a good voice

Listening to this one now. I will admit that knowing the twist going in lessens the impact slightly of some of reveals. Just finished Part 2 and find it interesting hearing the Doctor telling Narvin to erase another character.
