Audio Club: The Chimes of Midnight

Gotta say this. Great great story… and a lovely review that nails pretty much everything about why this story is so great.

Much as I love “Jubilee/Dalek”, I actually prefer both “The Chimes of Midnight” AND “The Holy Terror”. In fact, in terms of how much I enjoy “Chimes” and “Terror”, I’d be hard pushed to separate them.

Quintessential Who by one of the finest writers ever to write for the show (on TV or audio).

“Edward Grove is alive!”

Indeed. Just… WOW!

Just here to insert another 10/10 score - loved this since I listened to it last year!

One of the greatest ever, need I say more?

Listened to this last night.

It was my second listen, the first being a few years ago, having heard that this is one of the best Eighth Doctor audios, but knowing nothing about Charley and her first story, her arc, etc.

I first listened at night on a plane, and I kept falling asleep and having to rewind, but then the whole time loop thing got me very confused, I must say it was a very strange experience and I still don’t feel that I listened to it properly.

So this time I made sure I did not fall asleep, and I really enjoyed it! So creepy!

And I’m glad I have the context now about Charley. Looking forward to carrying on with her!

9/10, I’m off to read the reviews on the site now because everyone above just said “what more is there to say”

A solid 10/10. The best story I’ve listened to so far. It’s just so… Doctor Who, I can’t explain it.

It really gave me a new perspective on Charley’s arc, and I’m enjoying it. Obviously it was a little weird to listen to a Christmas story in October, but I don’t think I really minded it too much.

For a while I was a little confused, but like a good detective (or indeed a good Doctor Who) episode should, it all came together at the end.

I had never heard of this story before, nor of its reputation, but I can see why people praise it so much.

So I finished this one. I’ve listened to this a few times over the years and it really is everything people say it is. It’s one of those that defies description. It’s very hard to review. It’s a time loop Christmas mystery that’s so well written and acted that you just have to experience it for yourself. Probably the best Doctor Who Christmas story ever, and Big Finish has produced some really good ones. It’s just that good, there’s nothing else to say on the matter.

OK. This is the second time I have heard this. The first was all those years ago when it first came out. I liked it back then. And now…

It’s very good, but far from being a favourite.

The mystery is intriguing, with the setup and ‘goings-on’ being interesting and well done. But it goes on for far too long. I think cutting out half-an-hour would serve it some good.

For the last half-hour the story picks up pace, with a lot of interesting scenes and developments. Sadly, it doesn’t relieve the slight boredom I feel from the first three-quarters.

The performances are excellent, with special note to Lennox Greaves as Shaughnessy/Edward Grove.

Overall it’s a solid story, with a great ending, but sadly it gets a bit repetitive in the middle.

I give it a solid 4/5.

Started my relisten on Christmas Eve and finished it today. What an excellent story. So much atmosphere and mystery. A true highlight of early Big Finish and the Eighth Doctor range.

I try not to read too much about the stories before listening to them, so I didn’t know this was a Christmas themed story until afterwards, if I’d know I’d have listened to it a week earlier!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one - not 100% convinced by the ending but overall definitely one of my top 5 so far… and I loved the little bits of humour throughout to stop it being too melodramatic!
