This was probably my favourite of this series so far. I liked the discussions between Romana 1 and 2. I have some trouble with knowing who’s who among the men in the story and I think my enjoyment of the story would be greater if this was not the case. 4/5
yayy hi Mary Tamm!! This episode rocks
Honestly my favourite episode so far, I absolutely loved the back-and-forth between the two Romanas
The short version of my thoughts is that I adore this episode, I love all the banter between so many different characters, the dialogue is truly excellent, I love both Romana i and ii and also Leela, it’s got so much interesting plot. The longer version of my thoughts is under a cut because there kept being so many good things that I had to get them out while listening.
In total my favourite episode yet
How am I supposed to survive another year of this without exploding though if they keep being so good?
The Brax/Romana stuff is so good.
yayyyy I’m so glad you enjoyed it!! “Narvin not sleeping is important? I thought it just contributed to his characterisation as stressed and overworked” LMAO yeah so true they love to make him suffer and so do I I agreed with all your thoughts, it brought me a great amount of joy to read them
I’m very glad you enjoyed my thoughts! Tbh, I was a little worried that I’d started hyping these ones up to myself too much and end up disappointing myself, but they keep being so good?! And actually pacing myself really helps my enjoyment too. I feel like I’ve really found my part of doctor who to be obsessed with.
Also Narvin really gives off so strong “please just leave me all alone and let me do my ■■■■■■■ job” vibes, this really is horrible for him and Brax mindwipes him at the end too, poor guy
Muhahahaha see my dastardly ‘get everyone obsessed with Gallifrey’ scheme is working!!! Today it’s calling Narvin ‘poor guy’, before you know it you love him completely
Eh.
That’s about all my thoughts on Lies.
I’m actually kind of shocked to see this be such a popular story, because this just feels like a whole load of nothing to me. Set up with some tiresome exposition and a nice cast, that’s my opinions on the story in full.
Sure the conversations are quaint but there aren’t any cool ideas I can get wrapped up in or any significant character growth I can analyse, it just feels like the point where Gallifrey’s formula starts eating itself.
I’m still optimistic about Season Two, this just felt like set-up to me.

I like how this ties into the TV show and addresses Romana’s regeneration. A bit more Romana backstory was nice, but this wasn’t as compelling of a beginning as Weapon of Choice was for Series 1. Still, I’m hopeful Series 2 will become intriguing. I imagine that will come from Narvin and Darkel.
Is it primarily set up? Yes. Is it really good set up? Yes! This is when the series starts to sparkle. The dialogue is perfection. A story where the entire run time is literally “everyone is just talking to each other” is naturally very easy to be boring but everyone brings their A-game and takes some phenomenal dialogue and gives it the performances it deserves. We catch up with everyone, we find the state of Gallifrey since A Blind Eye, and the first plays of the chess match that will inevitably define the next two seasons of Gallifrey are made. Mate in 9.
Twice the Romana, twice the fun!
'Nuff Said
I enjoyed this one. Yes, it’s a lot of setup, laying down plot threads and introducing new characters. Pandora, Wynter and Darkel will be playing major parts over the next two seasons. Mary Tamm will continue to be around. So yes, this is a lot of setup and lore. But, the cast does great and the dialogue is wonderful. As I’ve said before Gallifrey, while it seems like a lot of talking in rooms and hallways, is primarily loved for the characters and their arcs across the series. It’s definitely worth it seeing the pieces fall into place.
Setup, but done really nicely here.
I love the character interactions we get here, Brax and Romana, Leela and Romana, Romana and Romana… Okay mostly I just love what we get of Romana here, but in my defence, Romana’s really good.
Brax’s interactions with Narvin here are also pretty nice, I like his confession of what he’s doing with time travel, and then his, glee isn’t the right word, but just how quick he is to suggest a mind wipe of Narvin after the events of the story.
Romana 1’s appearance was an unexpected surprise, but it was great for the story. I love the backstory we get for Romana here, her childhood, Brax mentally manipulating her, the retconning her reason for regeneration in the main show. In another writer/actor’s hands it could be a lazy excuse to retcon out a somewhat out of character moment for Romana from the show, but here it’s elevated, adding a sense of intrigue about her origins, and setting up what I assume is the ongoing thread of this season.
Also a last note, I like the worldbuilding touch that the myth of Pandora is universal, that every world has some equivalent of it.
I have to wait half a week until the next episode?! :C
You know you can just listen to it ahead of time…
Shhhhhhhhhh /j
In all seriousness, I mostly want to have it fresh in mind for the club, so tend to wait for the threads to drop before reading anything or listening to them
Don’t tempt me, waiting is hard enough as it is😆
But honestly, I love the schedule because I get to listen to these stories I already fell in love with as a treat after every hard week of uni. Always gives me something to look forward to.
Also if I continue at this rate (and I plan to, no matter whether we continue it as a club) I should be caught up around the next release
Okay, if I must… (Like I really need and excuse to listen to Spirit )
I listened to Weapon of Choice for the club, forgot to write my thoughts down at the time, and now it’s lesbianism ( cough, sorry, I mean Spirit ) NEXT WEEK?
Time flies! I really need to catch to with this club…
