Could not agree more, it deeply winds me up when Leela isn’t used well because she is actually so smart and good and she doesn’t deserve the way the writers make her into ‘haha funney primitive’ too much
I agree. Seasons 2 and 3 was where I got hooked on Gallifrey
Agreed on Seasons 2 and 3 being when Gallifrey shakes the nerves and starts to soar. Also agreed on the weird treatment of Leela in Season 1. The Andred subplot is odd. Ultimately, I think Season 1 is primarily a pilot. The setting up of the chessboard, as it were, for the actual story they wanted to tell in Seasons 2 and 3.
The Inquiry is probably my favorite of Series 1. While the actual inquiry is a relatively small part of the story, it is still enjoyable. The ties into the Braxiatel Collection is cool and the interaction between Romana and older Brax is a lot of fun. The Braxiatel Collection actually was first mentioned, by Romana, in City of Death as an alternative to the Lourve. Louise Jameson excels at the quiet Leela moments, almost more so than the warrior moments (which are still very good). I will admit that the resolution is a lot of exposition, but the resolutions to most mysteries are. And at least the actors are very good at their craft. That’s the Big thing about the Gallifrey series as a whole, its gold moments really are in the characters more than the plot. I understand that Narvin is rather off-putting here. I get not believing us when we tell you he’s a favorite character. But that’s part of the Gallifrey journey. To jump into War Room blind, the Leela/Narvin moments won’t hit near as hard if you haven’t been on that character journey with them. Anyway, next week we continue.
And then of course there’s Darkel. She’s still seemingly impartial here, but she’ll become a major player in the next two seasons so she’s definitely one to watch.
If nothing else, Gallifrey will always hold a special place in my heart for bringing Lynda Bellingham back as the Inquisitor and actually giving her a character beyond sitting behind a desk. She is brilliant across this series - such a loss.
Don’t care? About “A Blind Eye”? To quote Torchwood, for me that’s when “everything changes… and you’ve got to be ready!”
I suppose it’s unreasonable to expect that Gallifrey would be everybody’s cup of tea, but I can only reiterate what @sircarolyn has said about S2.
If you don’t get something from “A Blind Eye” then I guess it really isn’t for you… but if you do… if you DO?
…oh, but then…
…then the fun begins.
Colour me intrigued.
I’m very tempted to listen tonight!!
The episode was fairly average for me. I would have appreciated more of the courtroom drama aspect, and it was nice to have the Inquisitor featured. I’m here mainly for Romana and Leela; it’s why I bought Gallifrey 1-3 in the first place.
Relistening to this one as a. a Narvin lover and b. knowing the rest of the series is sooooooo funny. ‘I don’t want you [Leela] getting involved with [Narvin]’ ok Romana little do you know all three of you will be inseperable soon <3 also he’s soooo funny with his untrusting of everyone and insistence in Following the Rules. This guy <3333333 also i LOVE LOVE Leela and Brax’s relationship forever and it makes me so sad that it kind of gets forgotten by Enemy Lines that actually he is so nice to her and she trusts him.
Because she does trust him and he is THE only one who isn’t actively mean to her all the time (SO funny because that’s Brax but anyway). Like if you listen to it, everyone else (esp Narvin…) is being really horrid to her about being an alien, and sure Romana is nice to her but also Romana uses all her friends as pawns, while Brax is the only one who really sees and treats Leela as a person.
hey guys i love this series!!!
also screammmm I always forget this ep has one of my all time fave Narvin quotes:
One thing our President cannot be accused of is incompetence. She may be guilty of compassion, intuition, emotion, honesty, integrity - pragmatism, even. But she is supremely competent.
coming from a guy who claims to hate Romana. like come on man. that’s not hating words. ‘He seems to have become Romana’s man somewhat’ argggggggg
guys i think the new short trips are going to kill me
The Inquiry - 7/10
A suitably timey-wimey explanation for the goings on in the previous installments, and some lovely character work, I do just wish there were more inquiry in The Inquiry.
Firstly the acting for Leela is great and I love her interactions with the CIA agents after she uncovers what happened to Andred. Narvin is definitely starting to grow on me a bit, I’m not sure what I was expecting from him (I don’t really remember his appearance in War Master all that well as I didnt’ know the character at the time, but this almost-but-not-quite slimy character heading up the CIA wasn’t it, and I think this is the release that’s started to sell me on him. Romana is great as always, and I like the bit more character we get from Darkel here too, honestly just having her here again is great.
Generally I really like this combination of sci-fi, spy drama, and politics, the time travel element is confusing but explained well, and the explanation doesn’t feel like exposition with the context of the scene.
I also really like what more we get of Braxiatel here, and I really am wishing I’d read some of the books or listened to some Bernice Summerfield audios to have even more of him. The idea of him knowing about the events that his future self will go on to do in the vaguest terms is really interesting and I especially like how it’s used here, almost as a red herring. He didn’t set the data bomb in the past but had the idea to, so maybe it’s something he’ll do in the future? Leading you away from figuring out that no, it is something he has done but didn’t remember because of time stuff.
All in all, I really liked it, though I really do wish there were more courtroom drama in it. Those scenes are some of my favourites from Trial of a Timelord and I wish we got more here.
It’ll take a lot for me to catch up on Audio Club at this point, but I’m going to try to stay/get up to date with Extra!
hehe. haha. hehehehhehe yes!!! yes!!!
And for sure listening to Benny isn’t necessary for understanding Brax in Gallifrey but it definitely enhances it. He’s a really interesting guy
This was ok, dealing with the consequences of the first episode. I feel like such a nerd for recognizing the trial woman
No more a nerd than the rest of us.
