He’s incredible as the Doctor, and 15 is currently my 3rd favorite Doctor! Lux is definitely my favorite episode with him in it so far.
It’s been 3 years…already? Time flies. I love him. I agree with what timewimeythespian said.
I can’t believe it’s been 2 Years since he got announced. I remember seeing this Casting Announcement when I wasn’t really into Doctor Who, but intrigued nonetheless. Now 3 Years later I am reading obscure Short Stories from the 90s, lol.
Anyway, I am not sure what my Thoughts are on his Doctor. He’s enjoyable, but I still have no clear Idea of his Character, sure some Traits are easy to make out, but who is 15 really? That I simply don’t know. Despite not being a huge RTD2 Fan, I have really been enjoying the Energy that he brought to his Part!
I never got into Sex Education (the Netflix show, not just in general, I’m not that sheltered), and my first time seeing him was with the Barbie movie, so I didn’t have that strong an opinion on his initial casting. I’m a firm believer that there hasn’t been a single bad actor to play the Doctor, so just on that, I was looking forward to what he’d bring to the role.
And honestly, looking back on these three years, I really like his Doctor. Him crying in every other episode is something of a meme now, but I like that as part of him being a more emotionally vulnerable and open incarnation than most of the others. I liken him to George Lazenby as far as what sets him apart from the others, while still undoubtedly being the character in question.
Aside from the social commentary, what really keeps me looking back on Dot And Bubble with fondness is that ending. The Doctor, staring directly at a bunch of airheaded would-be colonisers, knowing full well that they are culturally ingrained to distrust or even hate him… and still pleading with them to let him help them. The frustration, the pain, the understanding tempered with a genuine want to help these people regardless of anything else; that is one of the most quintessential Doctor moments to have happened since the show crawled out of the Wilderness Years, as far as I’m concerned, and Ncuti’s performance made it hit that much harder.
I’ll probably do some major rethinking of all this once his inevitable regeneration occurs, but for right now, he has been slowly creeping up my personal Doctor rankings since he first appeared, so I have high hopes for him.
Watched Sex Education because of the announcement and fell in love with that show, and especially with Ncuti as an actor. Knew he’d nail it and he does! His performance is electric and with so many layers. I don’t love 15 himself because he hasn’t been the most defined character, and I hate to agree with reactionaries but yes I do hate just how frequent the crying usually is, but none of my issues are major or serious, and none are related to performance at all. He’s wonderful!
Ncuti is a great Doctor!
But 3 years already
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love Ncuti’s portrayal of the Fifteenth Doctor. really enjoying this era so far. What really excites me about Ncuti as the Doctor is how he embodies everything that I know and love about the character whilst also bringing something genuinely fresh and different to the role. I know his crying is controversial, but it’s just as much a quirk of personality as the many quirks we know and love with other Doctors. This Doctor feels more openly than any of the others (and that’s both different and refreshing) but it doesn’t curb any of his other traits.
What is often overlooked, I feel, when people are summarising what 15 is like, is that he is also a deeply reckless incarnation. I think people miss this because it’s often the crying that is focused upon. However, he really does hurl himself into situations, often without really taking stock first. Also, something he does so very well is to portray that burst of genius, that raw intelligence and quickness of thinking on his feet. That couples well with the recklessness (because he often has to think quickly). Love Fifteen. Love him to bits!
While he may not be my favourite, I think he is an amazing actor and brings his unique energy to the show. He easily lives up to the title of The Doctor (not Doctor Who ).
I hope he ends up sticking around after S2, it would be a shame to lose him so soon.
I’m with @RandomJoke, I’m not a huge RTD2 fan but the energy Gatwa brings to the role is undeniably magnetic and he’s often the best patt of an episode. I’d be sad to see him go if this were to be his last series
I’ve really been enjoying 15s run! Although I understand some of the criticism, I don’t mind the frequency of the crying. This incarnation sprang from a bigeneration, so who knows how that would affect someone? Add to that the fact that The Doctor has been around for thousands of years at this point, yet they still haven’t figured out a way to save everyone (except that one time…). Wouldn’t that make you cry, too? Anyway, I think Ncuti’s performance is magnetic, fun, manic, and deep; and there are too many good episodes for me to choose just one. Here’s to (hopefully, because that would take us to the 65th) another three years with 15!
Even though I am not entirely on board with Fifteen’s characterization, it’s nice to see how fast the fandom has taken to him considering the hurdles he has to overcome. Everyone I’ve seen has genuinely welcomed him with open arms since the first episode. I’m happy that Ncuti is so beloved. His run has been fantastic so far.
Sine the beginning of his tenure, I have only half-watched his episodes. They really don’t do anything for me, so take what I say from that perspective.
I just don’t like his portrayal. I’m not sure if it’s the writing of his character, or how he is playing him, but it just doesn’t do anything for me. Of the few episodes I have watched, he is the part I dislike the most.
Not my bag, but glad other people are enjoying him.
I don’t understand the criticism about 15’s crying, since he cries at things that would make anyone cry (if I was standing on a landmine or I thought my best friend was dead and aliens had taken over their body, I would totally cry), and it’s nice to see a fictional character cry as much as I did before I was medication. Maybe 15 would also benefit from 100 milligrams of Sertraline. /hj
He and Six need to hook up. Those two are always crying/sulking over something lol.
It’s crazy how he’s had like… half as many episodes as my favourite doctor and he’s in the top 4. Such a brilliant incarnation. I never understood the crying hate cause Ncuti is an excellent crier - you wouldn’t expect Picasso to paint without the colour blue would you? He’s an emotional Doctor, a veritable shaken up soda bottle after millennia of repression
What gets me about 15 is that to me at least, he’s a bit like an inversion of 7. Both Scottish Doctors that battled Godlike entities and would manipulate their companions - albeit with that aspect becoming more to the forefront in their second season. But while 7 does it through cold calculations and chesslike precision, 15 does it with charm. We see it especially so at the end of TRR - underneath all those smiles and laughs, he wants something and will get it. And when it switches from the happy-go-lucky kind to the sardonic, nasty kind (or just vanishes entirely)… yeesh. The way he effortlessly flipped up on Joy in JTW is straight out of the end of Curse of Fenric.
Ik we’re only halfway through this season but ooooo I really hope we get at least one more with him (maybe two if we’re being greedy)
Time really passed by quick. My favourite episode of his remains Boom. Such a wonderfully tense story by Steven Moffat, with some fantastic acting by Ncuti Gatwa.
It’s crazy how it’s been three years, but it feels so much less due to the amount of episodes.
Can someone stop time passing so quickly, please?! I remember the announcement dropping randomly one day after months of anticipation, having never heard of Ncuti Gatwa before, and being very excited to have a new Doctor who I knew nothing about.
Three years on, I’m really loving Ncuti as the Doctor (in case the profile picture isn’t enough of a tipoff!). As others have said, he’s an absolutely magnetic screen presence, and I love that his Doctor is outwardly very joyful and exuberant, but also capable of being dark and angry in a believable way. As someone who generally isn’t as keen on the more “human” incarnations, I think he really stands out. As a bisexual man, It’s also fantastic that we have an openly LGBT Doctor, onscreen and off (I know Fifteen is more likely gay based on how he’s presented, but that’s close enough for me). I think my only issue is the lingering uncertainties attached to the bigeneration - I don’t think Fifteen is as healed from all his trauma as he claims to Fourteen, but I can’t tell whether that’s intentional or not - in the grand scheme of his character, that doesn’t really matter though.
The most annoying thing about RTD2 for me is that most of the time, it hasn’t really allowed Ncuti to put his best foot forward - between sharing the spotlight in The Giggle, the poor run of opening episodes (at least in my opinion) from The Church on Ruby Road to The Devil’s Chord, the plot issues with the finale, and the fact a full quarter of his first season was Doctor-lite episodes, it only felt like he really got a chance to shine in Boom and Rogue. Fortunately, this year’s season has been far better, but I do feel that the above issues really harmed Ncuti’s opportunity to make a wide impact in his first year, which I think is a massive shame. I really hope the show is renewed and he sticks around, because I want a lot more from him as the Doctor
Yeah it’s gone quick. And only 15 episodes (including The Giggle) so far, which means that it still feels like he hasn’t properly got going. One of my frustrations with this era is precisely that, actually. He’s not necessarily being wasted but I feel like it’s just stopping short of properly doing him justice.
When his casting was announced I thought it was absolutely inspired. An actor I hadn’t for a second considered as a potential Doctor but, when revealed, felt like the perfect choice. He’s the best thing about The Giggle, an episode I’m not too keen on but he comes in and basically “yoinks” the show away from Tennant so effortlessly that he got off to a fantastic start.
Except, the bigeneration does hinder his journey in my opinion. A big watershed Doctor moment is, after a bit of uncertainty, they prove themselves to themselves and to the audience. We (and he) are denied that and it means that once we start proper with The Church on Ruby Road it feels like we’ve missed a big chunk of the Fifteenth Doctor. And even then only get limited time with him afterwards.
None of this is down to Ncuti though who I still think was absolutely the right choice. Moments like the scene in Rogue’s ship or finding the 50p in last week’s episode just feel exactly like the Doctor to me, except through a new lens. As it should be.
Truth be told, though, I’d like more of those moments to be given to him as they don’t feel enough in number. The darker side of Fifteen (in evidence most starkly when he confronts Conrad) is well conveyed as well so he does get to show range in the role.
So even though I think Ncuti is great, I don’t think he’s been able to show us just how great he can be in the role, there’s more to this Doctor that we should have had immediately following his regeneration (still think that would have been infinitely better than the bigeneration) and subsequently. He crept up my Doctor ranking very quickly and then kind of plateau’d just as sharply. And I think that’s because part of me feels like the true Fifteenth Doctor exists only in brief glimpses and as a wealth of potential.
There’s still 4 episodes of this season to go and while my faith that everything will be paid off well and it will stick the landing is running on fumes it’s still nice to know we’ve got at least a few more episodes with the Fifteenth Doctor to come. Episodes where, fingers crossed, he can show us more of the amazing Doctor I know he can be.
TL;DR - Ncuti = great, Fifteenth Doctor = weirdly not as great yet except in brief flashes where he’s perfect.
