With Great Power... - a Marvel Thread

As we have threads for Star Wars and Star Trek, thought it might be fun to have a catch-all thread for that other franchise behemoth - Marvel.

Film, TV, Comics, Game - whatever you want.

We’ve finally got around to the original Daredevil series from Netflix and finding it an intriguing contrast to DIsney’s Marvel stuff - so much more violent, gritty and dark. Just watched a man impale himself rather than be punished by his paymasters - and that was after watching him break another man’s arm (shown on screen) and cave his head in with a bowling ball (not shown thank god!).

Need a bit more life from the regulars but definitely wanting to watch more.

I was a skeptic for a long time but the best MCU show might just be Agents of SHIELD. It’s very different than Daredevil but a very fun comic book show overall that did a lot of cool stuff.

Loved Agents of SHIELD - such a good show and Fitz Simmons - best characters in a Marvel show that no one knows about!

Given it’s recently over, Agatha All Along was brilliant

I saw someone say that Kathrine Hahn is the American Michelle Gomez and I absolutely see it

Marvel’s a franchise I haven’t really paid that much attention to, honestly. I did watch the first X-Men movie, and I read a bunch of “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl”, partially because I already liked Ryan North’s writing.

Also, I watched the first season of Loki, and I did really enjoy that. There are things there I’d like to see in Doctor Who…

I was a fan of the comics for many years. I know I have read every Marvel comic from Fantastic Four #1 (1961) until One More Day (2008). I have read a few bits here and there since, but not at the rate I used to.

As for films, I watched all the 90s/00s as they came out. I started the MCU by seeing Iron Man in the cinema. I saw all up to Endgame in the cinema. Since then I have kinda fallen off with the releases. Too much mediocre stuff to really hold my attention.

TV wise I enjoyed SHIELD but did stop about season 4. Just wasn’t feeling it any more. Agent Carter was superb. I enjoyed the Nexflix series. If I ranked them, it would be:

  • Jessica Jones
  • Daredevil
  • Punisher
  • Iron Fist (yeah I actually like this show)
  • Defenders
  • Luke Cage (really didn’t like it)

MCU shows have been hit-and-miss to me.

  • WandaVision (cool concept, kinda left me feeling meh after)
  • The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (loved it, Bucky bias)
  • Loki (LOVED IT. MY FAVOURITE)
  • What If…? (it’s cool, but I forget about it a lot)
  • Hawkeye (surprisingly enjoyable)
  • Moon Knight (solid but to PG-13 for me)
  • Ms Marvel (watched first episode, wasn’t for me)
  • She-Hulk (saw the trailer and it wasn’t for me)
  • Secret Invasion (wasted a good story idea on this crap)
  • Echo (meh)
  • Agatha All Along (watched fist epsiode, will watch it eventually™)

100% Quoted for Truth - an utterly brilliant series which deserved more!

The only series we haven’t got to yet are Loki 2, Secret Invasion, Echo, Agatha All Along - and then anything not originating on Disney Plus - the rest of the Netflix ones etc.

Liked Moon Knight, She Hulk and thought Ms Marvel was brilliant. Falcon and Winter Soldier was a bit too po-faced by the end but enjoyed most of it. Loki was good but I wasn’t as into it as a lot of people seemed to be.

I was big into the MCU a few years back, but I kind of fell out of it when my favourite characters kept getting killed. I still enjoy it, but I’m much more selective in what new things I watch now.

Started on Agatha All Along last week with my mom and that one’s a lot of fun so far (we still have two more episodes to go).

I adore Agents of SHIELD. I watched it mainly around lockdown, and when the last season of it came out in summer 2020 if I remember correctly, the cast did a bunch of watchalongs on YouTube, those were really cool.

I relate to some of the themes that are in Loki. It’s why I connect with it.

Are there multiple versions of you somewhere?

Nope.

Forging your own destiny. Not being beholden to your past. Loving yourself. Trying to be a better person. etc

Also for Loki 2 the ending makes me cry.

I’m obsessed with Black Cat. Years ago, I heard of her and figured any character powerful enough to have been voiced by Jennifer Hale, Erica Lindbeck, and her off Burn Notice was worth stanning, and I was right.

I do like the rest of the Spideyfam but never cared for the other Marvel properties tbh. Aside from Gwenpool, who I always hated until her recent appearance in Fortnite, where to my shock I found her really funny and endearing.

My favorite Black Cat factoid is that her favorite group is canonically Erasure.

Genuinely Gwenpool is such a great character, I understand why a lot of people write her off as ‘female deadpool’, but it’s also genuinely criminal, she’s so much of her own thing and I absolutely love her

I grew up with more Marvel stuff than DC, but the Justice League cartoon probably set my direction for life. I just love the big three (Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman) of DC way too much. So if I had to ever pick a side I would go DC. That being said I don’t like the war between the fandoms. I love every Marvel thing that comes out. And the Raimi Spider-Man movies are probably my favourite superhero movies ever made.
I have a few heroes I would love to see team up. (Blue Beetle and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man.)

Watched another episode of Daredevil last night and it really is far more violent and graphic than I was expecting - almost to the point of turning my wife off it. Fisk decapitating the Russian brother using the door of the car was brutal.

The gangland politics is losing me a little but the fight scenes are well choreographed. I like the nurse character but Karen Page is a bit too ‘wet’ for my liking. I hope she starts to get a bit more life to her.

Still been carrying on with Daredevil Season 1 - Nelson vs Murdock was a superb episode. The two hander stuff with Foggy and Matt and the flashbacks to their early friendship was excellent and the ending with Fisk’s girlfriend and other guests collapsing from poison was thrilling! Despite not being a huge fan of gritty and tough drama this one has been utterly gripping and after being a bit unsure about Karen and a few of the other side characters, everyone really is developing and it’s doing some really interesting stuff with Fisk as a villain.

I know a first image from the new Daredevil series has been released and it’s good to see Foggy and Karen are still part of it.
