One last note and then I’ll shut up about the Bard… I’ve seen The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) twice, and both times my cheeks hurt from laughing so hard. That show is an absolute riot, if you ask me. Spoiler: You didn’t ask.
My favourite way of watching Shakespeare is at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre. I’ve seen a few there including Midsummer, Alls Well That Ends Well and The Comedy of Errors.
The BBC Shakespeares are also very good with casts to die for (even if they are studio bound).
I really like the Regent’s Park Theatre! Haven’t seen any Shakespeare there but I have seen some comedy.
King Lear and Macbeth I also really enjoyed Titus Andronicus when I read it at uni
One of the best cinematic versions of Shakespeare, Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. I adore the style, almost like a movie from the 1930s, minimal sets, 4:3, beautiful lighting it somehow feels simultaneously cinematic & theatrical. Denzel is fantastic.
I can’t watch the video currently, but he must be excellent in Shakespeare’s plays. I just read today that tickets for Othello on Broadway (which he stars in) are fetching upwards of 900 dollars.
The price of theatre is in general so prohibitive. A shame because it is so enjoyable & unique an experience.
I’ve only ever seen one play by Shakespeare, Richard III, albeit in a German rewrite. It was absolutely amazing though, because my friend and I managed to get super cheap tickets as students, in the first row the evening of the premiere. King Richard was played by a woman who absolutely killed the role and also just looked very good in general haha
We also studied Hamlet in school, which I enjoyed a lot
I think someone from Big Finish is lurking on the forum…
Nick…Nick…is that you? Don’t be shy…I take back all the criticism. Say hello!
Ooh, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is pretty good and I’m also a fan of As You Like It. And while it’s cliche, Hamlet is a very good play
The Kingmaker is an insanely good story! It tricked me into trying Ginger Beer for the first time! Took a giant swig and nearly coughed my hearts out! Got used to the taste eventually lol, just expected a softer drink for 5!
Oooh, now I want to know what was deleted…
To delete, perchance to dream…
The whole post was about Love’s Labour’s Won.
(Okay, probably not)
I was already thinking about getting back into watching Shakespeare, but the first audio from The Cosmos and Mrs Clarke set has me wanting to make that a reality. It could be fun.
Does that story need the trope ‘Shakespearean Influence’ added on the guide?
I own The Complete Works of Shakespeare but I’ve never read it lol
Isn’t it like mandatory to read all of Shakespeare in the UK?
