This is the only thing I am going to be capable of thinking about now when I go see the Gnu at the local zoo
Is that the new Doctor Whooves spin-off?
whenever someone spells it like that, that is how I say it in my head
I think my biggest 'ick is how elitist some people can be when it comes to the expanded media.
I fully admit that I’m an expanded universe buff, but if someone comes up to me asking for reccomendations or where to begin, I’ll hapily help them out.
I remember when I was first getting into the expanded universe stuff and I asked a bunch of people and they practically turned their noses up at me and said, and I qote;
“If you really have to ask about where to start, you’re not a real fan.”
Thankfully, that attitude seems to have vanished nowadays.
Sticking to the topic of expanded media, I absolutely loathe the perception that “Big Finish saved the Sixth Doctor”, because the Sixth Doctor was already brilliant. That’s the truth, whether you like it or not!
Thankfully in recent years I’ve seen more and more look back at his TV run and come around on it and in many ways I think Jodie Whittaker is the modern era’s Colin Baker. Such a similar ire against the show at the time, fans claiming expanded media will fix the Doctor in years to come, so I hope following that progression people eventually realise what we already had but I hope this time it won’t take decades for it to happen.
HE was good, the stories, and writing weren’t.
Change my dears and not a moment too soon - she IS the Doctor whether you like it or not!
– Colin Baker
Couldn’t disagree more! Vengeance on Varos, The Mark of the Rani, Revelation of the Daleks and Mindwarp are all absolute classics! Even after the BBC effectively kneecapped the show they were still able to get Trial of a Time Lord out of it, which while not without issue I consider it a success.
Oh, also:
“I love something that she has brought, that I’ve never seen in a Doctor before, which is joy: the joy of being the Doctor.”
–Colin Baker
I’m glad that you found a lot to like in this era. I really didn’t, for the most part. I much prefer him in audio.
I’ll just leave this link here
Love Ol’ Sixie!
It’s a nice quote but someone should present him with a mirror! He’s got that quality in spades himself
This is a huge annoyance of mine in the fandom also. It’s feels like flock mentality. Everyone went from “Six is terrible!” to “Six is fantastic!..but in the audios.” Give me a break.
This is also basically how I feel about all variants of “Jodie’s great but the writing sucks” or worse “Jodie could have been good with a better writer” because it really feels like hating on the era is just accepted as the norm and so often it feels like people can’t say any positive thing about it without throwing in a “but” and also acting like the writing being bad is some objective fact rather than a personal opinion. It certainly wasn’t flawless, and I’d say it was a step down from 12’s (which is IMO the best written era of the whole show), but I believe it’s mostly good.
I’m very much looking forward to whenever we eventually get Thirteenth Doctor Adventures, but I am really dreading how much I know I’m going to see “Finally Jodie gets some good writing” and “This is what she should have had on TV” when her era did really resonate with me and with a lot of other people.
Agreed with your first paragraph. The same thing applies to Six and Colin. There’s always a “but” thrown in. “Six is great, but primarily in the audios”, “Colin’s a great choice to play the Doctor, but it’s a shame how bad his scripts were”. And it’s always presented as if its an objective fact, like you said. I watched a decent number of Classic Who serials before I even knew who Six was, and his serials were far and away more entertaining (and “better written”) than the vast majority of other CW stories I’ve seen (and this includes Timelash).
What makes a “good” DW story in people’s eyes anyway? I’ll never understand it. I thought the Thirteen episodes I’ve seen were well written and enjoyable.
At times, I wish people would just say they don’t care too much for a Doctor or a Doctor’s era instead of using these, what seems like, false compliments, or compliments with stipulations.
Yeah I watched just a couple stories for each classic doctor and then loved 6 so much that I went back and watched all of his era before watching a few more of some others and eventually starting the full classic watch that I’m doing now, and I really did find his stories to generally be more captivating and entertaining to me than any other doctor’s.
Sadly, a fair few Doctor Who fans can only work in absolutes. It started in the 80s with all the ‘JNT must go’ nonsense.
Bouncing off of this and adding to it, I don’t necessarily think Colin’s terrible on TV. Yes, some of the writing is bad, and the “planned” arc they had could’ve been handled a lot better. But there are stories from those two seasons that I like. And Colin himself does quite well with the writing and direction he’s given. That said, I do think he’s much better on audio. He’s given a lot better material to work with, he’s not hampered by limitations of design and production, and the writers actually understand his character.
The same with Jodie. I don’t like her Doctor as much as I love Colin, but I feel that the writing did let her down at least somewhat. The thing with Jodie’s era is that a decent part of it should have gotten at least one more draft. Orphan 55 isn’t a terrible idea, it’s biggest flaw is that the moral/message/explanation feels tacked on at the end and partially out of left field. If it had gotten another draft, maybe that could’ve been smoothed out better.
I would say the other issue on Orphan 55 is that some of the story feels like it either didn’t make it from the writer’s head to the screen or was cut for time. Which is also a “one more draft” or potentially “make this a two parter” issue.
“Benni!”, OTOH, wasn’t a problem with the story, it was a feature.
