It’s the beginning of the end of my current employment. Had a performance review meeting with my manager today, and when I saw the HR rep show up, I knew what was coming. I’ve been put on a performance improvement plan that I’m certain there’s no way to live up to, so barring surprises, I expect to be jobless in a month.
Now, to be fair, some of my boss’s criticisms are justified. I’m poorly suited to my position and there are things I don’t do very well. Some of his criticisms are BS, but there’s really no way to defend myself without sounding petulant or like I’m trying to shift blame.
I haven’t really been happy in this job, like ever, but I’m very dubious about the chances of finding other employment at this time in my life and career. It took me 6 months to get one interview the last time around, and I’m not getting any younger.
Sorry to hear that Kevin. I don’t know how it works in the USA but are they required to make you redundant, or can they just fire you if they don’t think you’re performing? Here there are so many hoops to jump through to fire someone, the rights are very much on the side of the employee (something employers often complain about a lot, but it protects the most vulnerable!).
If you work in IT and have a lot of experience, you should be able to find something else! Doesn’t really matter what your age is, does it?
A lot of US states are “at-will employment”, so they can dismiss you at any time, for any reason (with exceptions) or no reason. Or vice-versa, but companies get irritated if you do that.
Never actually been a member of a union, so I couldn’t say. The US isn’t particularly worker friendly or big on worker rights, though. (And wasn’t before Trump. )
