What is your most controversial opinion?

Absolutely!!

And then we get old lady Iris Wildthyme to barge in and make a fantastic trio

PLEASE omg I would love that so much. How do we make this happen…

I would think so, buuuut these stories got so much heat in some circles because of Androzani that I thought why not

Don’t sound like ā€˜circles’ I’d have much time for…

To be honest this forum is the less stress I had with Doctor Who fans since I started watching; except maybe for my friends. But even them…

I think the doctor shouldn’t really characterised as a specific gender tbh, I mean I think its been said before but he’s an alien he shouldnt have to conform to our earthly constructs.

(but then i guess by saying that I am also 100% for a non binary doctor)

From the mouth of the Eighth Doctor:

"ā€˜You’ve never been a woman, have you?’

ā€˜I’m not sure I’ve ever even been a man.’"

Gallifreyan gender dynamics would be very interesting to explore. By nature of being played by human actors, they ā€œpresentā€ one way, but identity is another thing.
On this topic, I could give my whole ā€œthe Master is a trans womanā€ schpiel… which basically boils down to ā€˜she was happiest being Missy, and was able to get a hold of herself and relish in being evil, rather than panic about it’. Also, The Doctor Falls.
That’s to say; I want the next Master to be a woman. I’d love to see another female Doctor, or a non-binary Doctor.

I’d love to hear controversial opinions, it’s really fun and especially interesting. I’d argue there can be great points to be made about some certain stories or episode that are beloved (for good reasons) but why somebody may not connect with them so much. Anyways, this is a rather long thread, so I will probably pop up and look around at times to read some, in the meantime I will just leave a few of mine:

  • The Smugglers is one of the most underrated Hartnell Stories and a pretty great Historical actually
  • Season 6b is one of the rare who theories that makes my eyes roll. It’s not a bad theory at all, but I feel like most of the stories that are set there are kinda not using much of the potential presented there. Often they can feel like ā€œOh yet another second doctor adventure but he is older and oh jamie is there too but older tooā€ yes i am looking at you 2DAs Big Finish range, even through it does have some great moments and I did enjoy the Green Man Story enough
  • The Leisure Hive and the Creature from the Pit are actually pretty great
  • I feel like Doctor Who is much at home with the serial format than the 45min.-1hr. Format. Maybe not necessarily a hot take, more so a preference, but I feel like one of the things I really like with some longer Stories of both series and expanded universe is how they delve into their setting, I feel like typically that’s a thing which many of the nuwho episodes just simply can’t do due the limited time. (Not saying it’s a bad format, there are some great pieces told in that format, but it’s a shame for sure).
  • I adore hell bent, and I’d love day of the doctor, but… I don’t like they brought Gallifrey back. There are some great stories to tell there, but televised who was pretty weak at it for most of its time (War Games is great, but that barely counts, since the typical gallifrey story/how the timelords operate was pretty much only decided around the 70s)
  • Again not entirely sure how much this is a hot take, but looking back, while I am by no means a fan of the timeless children arc, I don’t think it was one of the worst retcons ever. A lot of it I don’t like, but I find arcs such as The Impossible Girl one much more annoying.
  • Zagreus is actually amazing
  • I think the Chibnall Historicals are pretty much the best of nuwho Yes I am aware of Fires of Pompeii, which I do like as much as the next person and yes vincent and the doctor is pretty amazing, but overall the rest of the nuwho historicals range from ā€œokayā€ to ā€œkinda badā€ in my opinion at least
  • (Probably not a hot take anymore) but the Kandyman Design is one of the very best of who and I am not being sarcastic. It’s silly of course, but I feel like it adds so much dimension to that serial. Probably going to elaborate on that when we reach that Serial in the TV Club (although that might take a while) but it’s a great design and I really dont understand the mockery from it.
  • (Again not sure how much you can count that as a controversial opinion but…) I think people are way TOO harsh on the Dinosaurs in Invasion of the Dinosaurs, when I first watched it I thought the effects were done solid to even good with some in the first Episode. From the way people talk about it, you’d think they are the most terrible thing ever. I am not against them offering a CGI Replacement for the Season 11 Boxset when it comes out eventually (similar as to the Mara Replacement Effect in Kinda) but I really think some statements in regard to them are a bit ridiculous.

Again, not entirely sure how controversial some of them are, but I think those would be some I have. Curios to read what other people have to say, but I am going to assume it will take me a while to get through it all
Gonna love Who for being so huge and appealing to so many kinds of people, even if some of them don’t understand how masterful The Smugglers actually is!!11

I really enjoyed The Smugglers when I did a re-watch recently. Something about it clicked which hadn’t before. I love revisiting stories. I always come away with something different - sometimes positive, sometimes negative. (I have thoughts on The Monster of Peladon I’ve been musing over).

Fully with you on Dinosaurs and the Kandyman. Both are brilliant!

I also love reading people’s divisive opinions, hence creating this thread, and I love that this forum is the kind of space where we can disagree back and forth in a constructive way. There are some things that my mind will never be changed on, but it’s lovely to see what other people think, and to feel comfortable to express that.

Glad to hear, and I am on the same board. I’d love to revisit stories, since sometimes they just click for me the second or third or whatnot time. Glad you enjoyed the Smugglers on your last rewatch. I still insist it’s a great one, I know most people view it mainly as ā€œunremarkableā€, which I totally disagree with.

Agreed! Really lovely here, which can be at times rather rare online, sadly. Glad this isn’t the case. And yeah no that’s totally valid!

At this point it’s more controversial for someone to say they don’t like Zagreus haha.

I’d say I agree with most of this

Just discovered this thread so thought I’d share some opinions of mine that people have disagreed with in the past

Jubilee is a boring story - unlikeable side characters and a dull plot make it a 2/10 for me

Matt Smith is my least favourite Doctor - he has two personality traits, either way too silly, bordering on stupid or angry, making most of his episodes boring and formulaic as he bumbles around the place and then drops a big angry speech at the end (I have to add I still love the man and think he’s a fantastic actor, I’m just not a massive fan of his writing)
I also prefer Dudman’s interpretation of the role

If you care massively about continuity and having an established chronological timeline then Doctor Who probably isn’t for you - especially in expanded media, it’s up to the fans to decide what’s canon and what isn’t, making it different for everyone

Well. We asked for hot takes, and that’s a couple spicy ones there. That last point I agree with, though I have a somewhat related hot take, in that while Doctor Who doesn’t officially have a canon, I think it’s rather ridiculous to consider anything beyond the TV show as if it’s ā€œmore canonā€, and even more ridiculous to expect the show to adhere to things established in expanded media. If Doctor Who had a canon, it definitely would be the show, classic, TV Movie, and modern.

And even this would create canonical problems, because the TV show has contradicted itself on multiple accounts. If we truly went by this, the Doctor would still be half human on his mother’s side :joy:

Which is why there has never been and never will be an official canon.

Well, canon doesn’t mean things don’t contradict each other. Canon just refers to the list of works that are considered official, the list of works that ā€œcountā€ so to speak. Contradictions are more in the territory of continuity, which is a different subject altogether. And Doctor Who’s continuity is a huge mess.

What differentiates Doctor Who from other series though - and it’s half the reason why it makes me a bit mad when fans completely disregard the expanded media - is that I don’t think there is any other IP with as many actors and writers reprising their roles.

It feels so unfair to me to label them unnoficial when one single Doctor - not to count them all - have given us THOUSANDS of hours in their role again. It blurs that line from ā€œcanonā€ to ā€œextraā€ for me.

I know that’s not what you’re saying; and there is probably more comprehensible ways to make my point, but…

I’ve generally latched on to the idea that the Doctor’s travels have changed the course of events so many times that the Doctor has rewritten sections of their own history multiple times, and that if events conflict, both were true at one point or another.

Of course, I also consider ā€œCurse of Fatal Deathā€ to be a timeline that happened, but is no longer the prime timeline…
