You know, some languages don’t actually have different words for blue and green and use the same word for both, and some developed separate words much later.
Also, if you show a bunch of people different shades between what is blue and green, different people draw the line between them in different places…
I can see that cause while I see black and blue, with how the light reflects off the black part I could see how it looks a bit gold… Can’t see the white at all though.
Interesting promo image. Let’s see what that shot actually looks like in the show:
Ignore any instinctive “The Tardis is famously blue. That is the Tardis, therefore it is blue” and look at what color it actually is (especially on those close-ups). If you were a new fan, or a character in the show who’s never seen the Tardis before, and you were shown that and asked to describe it, what color would you say it was?
So, that was the earliest show-off shot of this Tardis, let’s look at a much more recent one (again, watch the close-ups):
And then there’s the most recent shot of the Tardis that we have:
At best, in neutral lighting, it’s a sort of muddy blue-green, right on the fence between the two. However, most of the significant shots, the hero shots, the ones that stick in your head, are done with warmer, yellower lighting and color grading which push it firmly into the green column. It feels green, far more often than it ever feels blue.
Hmmmm - I might just concede there is a blue-green tinge in the Ghost Monument clip but I’m not seeing it at all in any of the other images. In fact, in the Legacy of Ruby Sunday one, Rose is wearing a blue-green jumper which makes the TARDIS look more obviously blue.
I remember watching The Space Pirates when it was originally broadcast and enjoying it a lot. Okay, I was six years old, but, hey, I trust my six year old incarnation’s good taste and judgement (actually, as an adult watching Doctor Who, a question I will quite often ask myself at the end of an episode is whether six year old me would have enjoyed/understood what was going on).
My main memory of The Space Pirates is of being deeply troubled when the space beacon was blown apart and terribly worried that our heroes might not be able to recover the TARDIS this time. I loved the Space Corps stuff, which younger me might have described as being like Star Trek, except that, as we all know, Star Trek had yet to be broadcast on British television. In fact, in real life the Space Race was still in full swing and we were still a couple of months away from Man landing on the Moon. So this adventure was great for any space-mad kids like myself who were watching.
